from the head of schoolThere is no way to sufficiently thank all of those mentioned in this annualreport. From the $10 gift sent by a college freshman who earns extra moneyby working in the library to six-figure gifts that helped us build the LaurieMezzalingua ’86 Center for Early Learning, every gift is sincerely appreciated – andgenuinely needed. We are not a wealthy school. We have neither a substantial endowment norinfinite resources. We have struggled to eek out a modest operational surplus ofaround $10,000 on average for the last 17 years. Our relative financial health resultsfrom consistently frugal management and from reaching out to a growing communityof supporters who care about first-rate independent education in Central New York. There are three major types of gifts that support the MPH community. Eachis vital to the School’s current and continued success. Annual gifts are directlyapplied to the yearly operating budget of the School. Because tuition incomecovers only about 80% of the actual cost of education at MPH, annual gifts arecritical to the here and now. They help to offset the School’s overhead and tosupport financial aid, our merit scholarship program, and a myriad of opportunitiesthat provide a rich and powerful environment for all of our young people.Virtually no independent school charges tuition sufficient to cover its annualoperating costs; all depend on annual giving. For independent schools, strongannual giving figures correlate with lower tuition increases. Budget calculationsare made by the Finance Committee of the Board of Trustees through a careful, considered process that receives further scrutiny through both internal andexternal auditing. We “zero-base budget” every operating line every year. Wedebate budget allocations. We are very careful with your money.Capital gifts, those made in support of our on-going capital campaign, are thesecond major category of gifts. Usually made over a longer period of time, capitalgifts help us to both make needed capital improvements and to increase the School’sendowment. Your capital gifts over the last two years have culminated in the recentcompletion of the Laurie Mezzalingua ’86 Center for Early Learning and in morethan a doubling of the MPH endowment, from just over $1 million to $2.8 million. Our next major objective is construction of a new media center/library withflexible, dynamic space and state-of-the-art innovations. The capital campaign hasnow secured nearly $3 million of our $6 million goal, and, with luck, we will beginconstruction in the summer of 2009 on this new facility that will enhancelearning for every one of our students.Planned gifts and membership in our Tree of Life Society make up thethird category of giving. These gifts are usually estate based and can often savethe donor a substantial amount of money in current tax dollars. Planned gifts arealmost exclusively directed toward the endowment, which supports the long-termhealth of the School and provides fiscal leverage when the School needs to takeout short-term construction loans or undertake major projects. For a school such as ours, the National Association of Independent Schoolsrecommends an endowment two and-a-half to three times the annual operatingbudget – or, for us, approximately $27 million. The fact that we are so far from anendowment of that figure is a cause of concern for the Board of Trustees and theadministration of this school. Having a healthy endowment is the insurance theSchool needs to be able to weather unpredictable storms. The sad fact is that the closing of the old Manlius School on its wonderfulcampus in Manlius was an operating decision necessitated by an endowmentinadequate to cover an annual lost. Perhaps as a consequence of our School’shistory, we are intent on securing the long-term viability of MPH through themechanism of the planned gift. We are excited that in the last 10 years, we haveadded some 80 names to the Tree of Life. As more people of foresight anddevotion to fine education join the Tree of Life, they will help ensure thatMPH will be here for our grandchildren. We are grateful to all of you who have chosen to give to the School in anyof these ways. Many of you have sacrificed and given up luxuries to help theSchool. Whether your gift was to the annual fund, the capital campaign, or theTree of Life, you have made a very special difference in our wonderful school. If your name appears anywhere in this document, we thank you for your careand loving concern.Baxter F. from the president of the boardOnce upon a time, in Central New York, there were two independentschools, different in so many ways, yet also similar. One was an all malemilitary preparatory school, where young boys began the journey tobecoming “Old Boys.” For many, that journey was formative. It provided focus, direction, and resolve. For some, The Manlius School was transforming. Irresoluteand undisciplined adolescents learned, under the tutelage of teachers and coaches, that behavior, good or bad, has consequences. They learned lessons in the classroomand on the playing field. Even those who came only as one-year, post-graduatestudents, boys who were almost men, say their year at Manlius was enormouslyimportant to their lives. On Jamesville Road, there was the other and much smaller school. Pebble HillSchool was co-ed and graduated senior classes of 12 students. Its alumni, too, tell ofteachers and coaches who changed their lives. Pebble Hill students attended classesin a farmhouse and a barn, and, though they did not drill with rifles or stand formationin the snow, they emerged from their independent school experience confidentthat they were ready for the next stages of their lives. And then the world changed. These two wonderful schools decided tobecome one. That merger was hard — hard to bring about and, for many, hard toswallow. The parent schools’ differences were emphasized. Their similarities wereignored. The new school born of this merger was seen by many as illegitimate, asless than worthy. As I write this — my seventh and last annual report message to the MPHcommunity — I bellow from the rooftops that the naysayers were terribly wrong.Manlius Pebble Hill School does for its students precisely what its parent schoolsdid for theirs. Our students continue to benefit profoundly from talented, devoted teachersand coaches. Our scholars are our athletes and our performers and artists. Theyachieve great success, win glittering prizes, and are young men and women whomake us all proud to be part of the life of this incredible school.Indeed, we are “One heart, one voice, one school.” And we would not bewhere we are had all of you listed in this report not been so generous over the lastyear. Because of all of you — alumni of all three schools, trustees, parents of studentsand graduates, grandparents, faculty, staff, and friends — our annual campaign wasa rousing success. Our capital campaign has already set a campaign record, and weare only half way to our $6,000,000 goal. Thank you for your past and, I trust, future financial support. It has been my privilege to report to you for seven years. As co-chair of thecapital campaign, you will be hearing from me again. We will achieve, evenexceed, our goal and will strengthen the School’s foundation, ensuring thatMPH will continue to thrive long after we have all left the scene.Peter Manolakos, PresidentBoard of Trustees2 M A N L I U S P E B B L E H I L L 0 6 / 0 7 A N N U A L R E P O R T

If your gift of stock is one you have owned for more than one year, you maydeduct the full fair market value of the stock as a charitable contribution, while eliminatingcapital gains taxes. This gift enables many of our friends to contribute far moreto the School than would otherwise be possible.Corporate Matching GiftMany employers will match your gift to Manlius Pebble Hill. Simply submit a matchinggift form, which is usually available from your human resources department, with yourgift. There are a number of simple bequest arrangementsthat can work for you or your loved ones.Life InsuranceLife insurance is a unique way to give to Manlius Pebble Hill School. A gift of an existing“paid up” policy allows you to make a significant investment in educating future orcurrent students, while receiving a tax benefit equal to the replacement value or costbasis of the policy, whichever is less. While an existing policy is preferable, the Schoolis happy to discuss new policies or naming the School as a designated beneficiary withfriends who believe this arrangement is the way they can best fulfill their wish to makea major commitment to the School.Charitable Remainder TrustThe Charitable Remainder Trust allows you to establish a trust that benefits youand/or your beneficiaries with income for life or a period of years, and then directsthe remainder to the School when the trust terminates. Remainder Trusts arecommonly used in two forms: the Unitrust, where variable income is received onan annual basis, or the Annuity Trust, where the annual payment is a fixed dollaramount. Named trusts are a wonderful way to leave your legacy to the School andreceive a current income tax deduction.Charitable Lead TrustCharitable Lead Trusts are another way to benefit your family and Manlius Pebble HillSchool. With this type of trust, Manlius Pebble Hill receives an annual payment for upto 20 years and, at the end of the trust term, any money remaining can be left to yourfamily members tax-free. ZogbySeveral of my friends not only wondered why I agreed to beDevelopment Chair for the MPH Board of Trustees, but alsowondered why I was so excited about the opportunity. Theyviewed the position as an extremely difficult one that required askingpeople for money constantly. While that is certainly a part of the role,it also encompasses so much more. Before my children began attending MPH, I served on a non-profiteducational institution’s board, focusing primarily on development.I also have been a long-time volunteer for my independent schools(elementary, middle, upper and boarding school, as well as my college)as a class agent. I enjoyed fundraising for all the organizations withwhich I volunteered because I believed strongly in their causes. When you believe in the mission and vision of a non-profit, askingfor monetary support is not difficult.I expected the same to be true when I began as an Annual Fund volunteerat MPH four years ago. Interestingly enough, it was even easierfor me to encourage the MPH community to contribute than I hadexpected. In the past, I was advocating for organizations that werehelping others, and that had helped me in the past. When I startedvolunteering for MPH, I was advocating for an organization that wasbenefiting my children. I witnessed first-hand on a daily basis theunique academic and whole child education at MPH and was ableto share my enthusiasm and love for the program with other parentsat school whose children were beneficiaries as well. There are many challenges, however, in our School. Because we are theonly Pre-K–grade 12 independent school in this region of New YorkState, families do not necessarily understand the need for fundraisingat a private school. It is extremely gratifying for me to see that moreand more MPH families understand that all private schools have a“gap” between tuition and the cost of educating each child and thata philanthropic community can make the difference between a goodeducation and an outstanding one. While we have much more work todo, we are heading in the right direction and have made good progress.Development at MPH encompasses not only fundraising, but alsocommunity and “friend-raising” events. Participating in these eventswas an enjoyable part of my role during the 2006-2007 school year. TheMPH community is diverse and interesting, and I enjoyed attendingevents and meeting many families in our school. Everyone I got to knowshared my sense that MPH is a special place where our children are notonly improving their minds, but also learning to become world citizens. In order to enhance our community-building efforts, the DevelopmentCommittee in the 2006-2007 school year included not only board members, but also former board members, members of our faculty, alumni, and friends of MPH. The Development Committee has become morethan a clearinghouse for information; now it is also a forum within whichwe can brainstorm ideas to further strengthen the sense of communityat MPH. I would like to thank the Development Committee and PeterManolakos, President of our Board of Trustees, for asking me to servethe School in this way and for his support of our development activitiesthis academic year. our promise for the future: a campaign for manlius pebble hillWith the successful launch of Our Promise for the Future, Manlius Pebble Hill has embarked on themost ambitious capital campaign in our school’s 137-year history. Raising $6 million is our goal andwith the devotion of campaign volunteers and generous supporters, we are almost half way there.Much thought and consideration have gone into the campaign goals. Our past has taught us the importance ofbuilding a strong foundation for the School, which is why $2 million of this campaign has been earmarked for ourendowment. Alumni in particular feel a strong passion for endowment and have been happy to hear that MPH isincluding endowment in this campaign.Renovating and enhancing the campus are the two other goals of this campaign. Funds raised through this efforthave already built the new Laurie Mezzalingua ’86 Center for Early Learning, refurbished the Barn, and updatedthe Knox Farmhouse. New athletic fields and a media center are next on the campaign agenda.Listed below are the generous friends of the School who have already made a pledge to the campaign.
