<strong>Applied</strong> <strong>Technology</strong> exp<strong>and</strong>s <strong>Microbee</strong> production<br />

<strong>Applied</strong> <strong>Technology</strong> has opened a new factory in West<br />

Gosford to meet the dem<strong>and</strong> for their <strong>Microbee</strong> personal<br />

computer. At the opening in April, <strong>Applied</strong> <strong>Technology</strong>'s<br />

managing director Owen Hill announced that the <strong>Microbee</strong><br />

will be distributed in Sweden, Norway, Israel, the UK, Canada,<br />

United States, South Africa, Malaysia, the Philippines <strong>and</strong> West<br />

Germany. In Malaysia the computer is being considered for<br />

use in government schools as an educational computer.<br />

Over 8000 <strong>Microbee</strong>s are already in use in Australian homes<br />

<strong>and</strong> schools, with over 2500 computers used in primary <strong>and</strong><br />

secondary education in NSW. <strong>The</strong> computer is recommended<br />

for use in schools in NSW along with the Apple, while negotiations<br />

are continuing with the Education Departments of<br />

Western Australia <strong>and</strong> Queensl<strong>and</strong>.<br />

In addition to the basic <strong>Microbee</strong>, new colour <strong>and</strong> diskbased<br />

CP/M systems are in production <strong>and</strong> the new <strong>Microbee</strong><br />

"IC" has been introduced. This new machine includes<br />

integrated Basic, word processing, machine language monitor<br />

<strong>and</strong> terminal communications software "built-in" in ROM.<br />

<strong>The</strong> new factory is already producing just on 1000<br />

<strong>Microbee</strong>s a month, with production set to move to 2000 a<br />

month. Future plans call for the production of 100,000 units<br />

each year from the Gosford factory <strong>and</strong> the establishment of<br />

an Australia-wide network of retailers <strong>and</strong> dealers for<br />

<strong>Microbee</strong> computers, software <strong>and</strong> peripherals.<br />

Largely under the impetus of the <strong>Microbee</strong>, <strong>Applied</strong><br />

WNW<br />

Mr Owen Hill, Managing Director of <strong>Applied</strong> <strong>Technology</strong>,<br />

looks on as the new Gosford factory is officially opened by the<br />

NSW Minister for Education Mr J. J. Mulock.<br />

<strong>Technology</strong> has grown from just two employees two years<br />

ago to over 80 full-time <strong>and</strong> part-time employees, providing a<br />

significant boost to employment in Gosford.<br />
