2006 40 Hour Famine
Leadership Camp
In late January this
year four students from
Mount Aspiring College
attended the 2006 40
Hour Famine Leadership
Camp in Lyttelton, just
out of Christchurch.
Hannah Beaufoy, Whitney
Mulqueen, Rose Adams
and Laura Ferguson met
at the camp ready for
a fun, inspirational and
information filled weekend.
At first everyone was very
shy and only stuck by
the people they already
knew, but after a quick
introductory talk we played
a few games to help us
all ‘break the ice’ and
get to know each other
a bit better. During the
rest of the weekend we
took part in many more
activities and listened to
many inspirational and eye opening
speeches from a few famous New
Zealanders, all of which blew us away
and left us speechless. Each of these
gave us a chance to see things from
the perspective of people suffering
in poverty all around the world. The
emotional impact we felt gave us
greater motivation to go home and
try as hard as we could to encourage
our schools to get involved and raise
as much money as possible by all
doing the famine. This camp also
provided us with a lot of skills like time
management, working as a team and
leadership skills.
Overall, a great weekend with the
World Vision crew and other students
from around the South Island.
Rose Adams and Laura Ferguson
The theme for 2006 was ‘Spread
the Word’ and the actual Famine
was held on the weekend of the
17-19 March. The college was ably
assisted by an enthusiastic committee
comprising Rosie Adams, Harriet
Beattie, Hannah Beaufoy, Sophie
Brown, Phoebe Crawford, Laura
Ferguson and Whitney Mulqueen.
The College raised over $7000 which
was another fantastic effort involving
the commitment from students, staff
and the local community. The money
raised was sent to India, Cambodia,
Rwanda and many other countries to
release children from bonded labour
and give them an education so they
can learn and have choices for their
future.
Thank you to Mr Turnbull for
all the encouragement you
gave to the 2006
40 Hour Famine
Committee this year.
