Message from the Pro Vice-Chancellor
and Executive Dean
Hello and welcome to the first edition of the Faculty
of Arts, Business, Informatics and Education (FABIE)
Student Newsletter for 2011. For all of our continuing
students, I hope you had a relaxing break from study and for
our new students, a very warm welcome to the Faculty.
In 2011, new programs and initiatives include the
Bachelor of Music at CQUniversity Noosa to be delivered
in conjunction with Sunshine Coast Institute of TAFE.
CQUniversity has enrolled its first cohort of law students
through the Bachelor of Laws which is accredited with
the Legal Practitioners Admissions Board. For primary
and secondary school students in the Mackay district the
Conservatorium Academy Music Theatre program will be
run by Central Queensland Conservatorium of Music (CQCM)
in 2011. The Bachelor of Business has taken to the skies by
offering an Aviation specialisation.
I invite you to read on and keep up to date with some great
upcoming events. We also take the
opportunity to introduce you to some of
the services available at CQUniversity,
which will enhance your overall
University experience.

iPad Winners!
Teaching and Learning Survey
Thank you to all the students who provided their
nominations recognising outstanding FABIE teaching
staff in the Teaching and Learning Survey that was
conducted in late 2010. Your feedback is very valuable to us.

The most outstanding
teaching staff member
nominated by FABIE students
was Robyn Alcock.
Robyn has been lecturing at
CQUniversity for over 25 years.
During this time she has lectured in
the areas of introductory accounting;
management accounting; accounting
systems and computer auditing.
She has also held a number of administrative roles over the
years including the roles of Associate Dean (Teaching and
Learning) and acting Head of School, and has participated
on a number of university committees. Robyn’s research
interests lie mainly in the area of accounting and education
but she confesses that her energies are channelled more
into the teaching and learning side of her position. She
says, ‘I am always on the lookout for, and am keen to
explore innovative ways of teaching accounting. I still
thoroughly enjoy my interaction with students. Recently I
have taken on the role of First Year Business Coordinator
in my faculty. I effectively provide a ‘one stop shop’ for
fi rst year business students. Earlier in my teaching career
I won the award for the University Quality Lecturer of the
year. I actually thought that could not be topped until I
was told I had won the students’ choice of Most Valued
Quality Teacher for 2010. There is no better reward than
knowing that you may have had a positive infl uence on
someone’s life and that they have taken the time to show
their appreciation. I’d like to thank those students who
responded to the survey and now the bar has been set I will
strive to continue working at that level!’

It’s never too early to start preparing for exams. The end of term
is fast approaching. Getting organised and being prepared can
make all the difference.
Exam period: 2 – 10 June. Your personal examination schedule
can be accessed via CQUcentral two weeks prior to the
examination period.

and students of the Bachelor of Music Program. Always
entertaining, this concert features Jazz and Popular ensembles
and the CQUniversity Jazz Orchestra plus a special guest.

The Careers and Employment Service assists current students
through running regular career planning, career drop in and
employment preparation sessions as well as advertising the latest
industry job vacancies targeted at CQUniversity students on its
online jobs board at CareerHub.
