<strong>How</strong> <strong>to</strong> <strong>m<strong>in</strong><strong>or</strong></strong> <strong>or</strong> maj<strong>or</strong> <strong>in</strong> <strong>m<strong>at</strong>h</strong> <strong>at</strong> <strong>SJSU</strong><br />

<strong>Tim</strong> <strong>Hsu</strong><br />

1 <strong>Lower</strong>-<strong>division</strong> classes<br />

If you want <strong>to</strong> <strong>m<strong>in</strong><strong>or</strong></strong> <strong>in</strong> <strong>m<strong>at</strong>h</strong> <strong>at</strong> <strong>SJSU</strong>, the first step is usually <strong>to</strong> take M<strong>at</strong>h 30/30P, 31, and 32<br />

(Calculus I–III). 1 If you want <strong>to</strong> maj<strong>or</strong> <strong>in</strong> <strong>m<strong>at</strong>h</strong>, you need <strong>to</strong> take those classes plus M<strong>at</strong>h 42 (Discrete<br />

M<strong>at</strong>h). While you’re do<strong>in</strong>g th<strong>at</strong>, here are some th<strong>in</strong>gs <strong>to</strong> keep <strong>in</strong> m<strong>in</strong>d.<br />

Spread out your required GE classes <strong>in</strong>stead of tak<strong>in</strong>g them all early. F<strong>or</strong> some reason,<br />

many students are <strong>to</strong>ld <strong>to</strong> “get your GE classes out of the way as soon as possible.” This is, without<br />

question, absolutely the w<strong>or</strong>st possible advice f<strong>or</strong> future students <strong>in</strong> <strong>m<strong>at</strong>h</strong> <strong>or</strong> any other technical<br />

maj<strong>or</strong>. The reason is, if you take all of your GE’s first, then l<strong>at</strong>er on, either you will end up tak<strong>in</strong>g<br />

4 <strong>or</strong> m<strong>or</strong>e “nerd” classes per semester, caus<strong>in</strong>g gre<strong>at</strong> damage <strong>to</strong> your GPA, your health, and your<br />

sanity, <strong>or</strong> you will end up need<strong>in</strong>g extra time <strong>to</strong> f<strong>in</strong>ish. Save your GE’s f<strong>or</strong> l<strong>at</strong>er <strong>in</strong> your career as<br />

“sanity ma<strong>in</strong>tenance” classes.<br />

Start tak<strong>in</strong>g non-calculus <strong>m<strong>at</strong>h</strong> classes as soon as possible. F<strong>or</strong> example, you could<br />

take 161A (Applied St<strong>at</strong>istics I) right after f<strong>in</strong>ish<strong>in</strong>g M<strong>at</strong>h 31 (Calculus II), <strong>or</strong> you could take M<strong>at</strong>h<br />

129A (L<strong>in</strong>ear Algebra I) <strong>at</strong> the same time as M<strong>at</strong>h 32 (Calculus III). You could even take M<strong>at</strong>h 42<br />

(Discrete M<strong>at</strong>h) <strong>at</strong> the same time as Calculus II <strong>or</strong> Calculus I.<br />

In many ways, non-calculus classes are a better <strong>in</strong>dica<strong>to</strong>r of wh<strong>at</strong> it is like <strong>to</strong> <strong>m<strong>in</strong><strong>or</strong></strong> <strong>or</strong> maj<strong>or</strong><br />

<strong>in</strong> <strong>m<strong>at</strong>h</strong> than calculus classes, so they’ll give you a better idea of wh<strong>at</strong> you like <strong>or</strong> don’t like about<br />

<strong>m<strong>at</strong>h</strong>. Also, if you end up maj<strong>or</strong><strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> <strong>m<strong>at</strong>h</strong>, it’s better <strong>to</strong> start your maj<strong>or</strong> classes earlier, as there<br />

is a cha<strong>in</strong> of prerequisites required <strong>to</strong> complete the degree.<br />

2 Classes f<strong>or</strong> the <strong>m<strong>in</strong><strong>or</strong></strong>/Transition classes<br />

After f<strong>in</strong>ish<strong>in</strong>g your lower-<strong>division</strong> <strong>m<strong>at</strong>h</strong>, <strong>to</strong> complete a <strong>m<strong>at</strong>h</strong> <strong>m<strong>in</strong><strong>or</strong></strong>, you need <strong>to</strong> take three <strong>m<strong>at</strong>h</strong><br />

classes numbered 100 <strong>or</strong> higher (exclud<strong>in</strong>g 100W, 101, 105, 106, 107A, 107B, and 110L). F<strong>or</strong> many<br />

people, the best three classes are M<strong>at</strong>h 129A (L<strong>in</strong>ear Algebra I), M<strong>at</strong>h 133A (Ord<strong>in</strong>ary Differential<br />

Equ<strong>at</strong>ions), and M<strong>at</strong>h 161A (Applied St<strong>at</strong>istics I). They are all <strong>at</strong> roughly the same level of difficulty,<br />

and can be taken <strong>in</strong> any <strong>or</strong>der. Those three classes are also an excellent <strong>in</strong>troduction <strong>to</strong> the <strong>m<strong>at</strong>h</strong><br />

maj<strong>or</strong>, so if you like them, you should def<strong>in</strong>itely th<strong>in</strong>k about maj<strong>or</strong><strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> <strong>m<strong>at</strong>h</strong>!<br />

If you do end up th<strong>in</strong>k<strong>in</strong>g seriously about maj<strong>or</strong><strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> <strong>m<strong>at</strong>h</strong>, one other class th<strong>at</strong> you should take<br />

<strong>at</strong> this stage, if not earlier, is M<strong>at</strong>h 108 (Introduction <strong>to</strong> Proof). This class provides a transition<br />

from the calcul<strong>at</strong>ional emphasis <strong>in</strong> lower-<strong>division</strong> <strong>m<strong>at</strong>h</strong> classes <strong>to</strong> the gre<strong>at</strong>er conceptual (and yes,<br />

sometimes the<strong>or</strong>etical) emphasis <strong>in</strong> upper-<strong>division</strong> <strong>m<strong>at</strong>h</strong> classes. M<strong>at</strong>h 108 is also a prerequisite<br />

f<strong>or</strong> the proof-heavy classes (M<strong>at</strong>h 128A, 129B, and 131A) required f<strong>or</strong> most <strong>m<strong>at</strong>h</strong> maj<strong>or</strong>s, and <strong>in</strong><br />

general, it’s good prepar<strong>at</strong>ion f<strong>or</strong> the different ways of th<strong>in</strong>k<strong>in</strong>g th<strong>at</strong> you will f<strong>in</strong>d <strong>in</strong> higher-level<br />

<strong>m<strong>at</strong>h</strong> classes.<br />

3 Some c<strong>or</strong>e classes of the maj<strong>or</strong><br />

If you’ve f<strong>in</strong>ished your <strong>m<strong>in</strong><strong>or</strong></strong>/beg<strong>in</strong>n<strong>in</strong>g maj<strong>or</strong> classes from the previous section, then you’re ready<br />

<strong>to</strong> tackle the c<strong>or</strong>e classes <strong>in</strong> the maj<strong>or</strong>. The key po<strong>in</strong>ts are:<br />

1. F<strong>in</strong>d a faculty advis<strong>or</strong> <strong>to</strong> help you choose your schedule f<strong>or</strong> the next few years, and talk<br />

with your advis<strong>or</strong> early and often! Don’t pick bl<strong>in</strong>dly from the c<strong>at</strong>alog; a good advis<strong>or</strong> can tell<br />

you which classes are easier <strong>or</strong> harder, which classes you should take first, and so on.<br />

1 To be precise, a <strong>m<strong>at</strong>h</strong> <strong>m<strong>in</strong><strong>or</strong></strong> requires 18 units of <strong>m<strong>at</strong>h</strong>, <strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g M<strong>at</strong>h 30 <strong>or</strong> 30P, M<strong>at</strong>h 31, and <strong>at</strong> least 9<br />

upper-<strong>division</strong> units. Most <strong>m<strong>at</strong>h</strong> <strong>m<strong>in</strong><strong>or</strong></strong>s end up tak<strong>in</strong>g M<strong>at</strong>h 32 as a third lower-<strong>division</strong> course, though 30P and 31<br />

<strong>to</strong>gether <strong>to</strong>tal 9 units, leav<strong>in</strong>g only the upper-<strong>division</strong> units.


2. Plan everyth<strong>in</strong>g out early. As soon as you are <strong>in</strong>terested <strong>in</strong> maj<strong>or</strong><strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> <strong>m<strong>at</strong>h</strong>, make an<br />

academic plan f<strong>or</strong> each semester until your <strong>in</strong>tended gradu<strong>at</strong>ion d<strong>at</strong>e, plann<strong>in</strong>g out the <strong>m<strong>at</strong>h</strong><br />

classes first. Note th<strong>at</strong> if you’re an applied <strong>m<strong>at</strong>h</strong> maj<strong>or</strong>, you have <strong>to</strong> take 4 classes <strong>in</strong> a <strong>m<strong>at</strong>h</strong>rel<strong>at</strong>ed<br />

applic<strong>at</strong>ion <strong>to</strong>pic (physics, bio, CS, etc.), so you should start tak<strong>in</strong>g those classes <strong>at</strong><br />

least 2 years bef<strong>or</strong>e gradu<strong>at</strong>ion.<br />

3. W<strong>at</strong>ch out f<strong>or</strong> prerequisites. A prerequisite map can be found onl<strong>in</strong>e; go <strong>to</strong> the M<strong>at</strong>h web<br />

page (http://www.<strong>m<strong>at</strong>h</strong>.sjsu.edu) and look under the Courses & Instruction l<strong>in</strong>k.<br />

4. DO NOT TAKE MORE THAN 3 MATH CLASSES IN ANY GIVEN SEMESTER.<br />

Tak<strong>in</strong>g <strong>to</strong>o many <strong>m<strong>at</strong>h</strong> classes <strong>at</strong> once is the most common reason f<strong>or</strong> <strong>SJSU</strong> <strong>m<strong>at</strong>h</strong> students’<br />

academic careers <strong>to</strong> get derailed. Remember, if you take 4 classes, and fail one, th<strong>at</strong> one failed<br />

class can cause you <strong>to</strong> waste literally years of time try<strong>in</strong>g <strong>to</strong> make up f<strong>or</strong> it.<br />

It’s also a common <strong>SJSU</strong> practice <strong>to</strong> take lots of classes <strong>to</strong> “save money” by gradu<strong>at</strong><strong>in</strong>g faster.<br />

<strong>How</strong>ever, the brutal truth is th<strong>at</strong> if you take lots of classes and get mediocre grades <strong>in</strong> them,<br />

no one (employers, grad schools, etc.) will care th<strong>at</strong> you were tak<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong>f<strong>in</strong>itely many classes<br />

and w<strong>or</strong>k<strong>in</strong>g 40 hours per week; all th<strong>at</strong> will happen is th<strong>at</strong> they’ll see your GPA and throw<br />

away your resumé. In the long run, it may earn you hundreds of thousands of dollars <strong>to</strong><br />

take fewer classes and do better <strong>in</strong> them.<br />

5. F<strong>in</strong>ish the writ<strong>in</strong>g requirement as soon as you can. If English is not your n<strong>at</strong>ive<br />

language, this can be a big pa<strong>in</strong>. In any case, you should start as early as possible. (By the<br />

way, once you’re passed the WST, M<strong>at</strong>h 100W is a good way <strong>to</strong> fulfill the requirement; it also<br />

doubles as a good sanity ma<strong>in</strong>tenance class.)<br />

Here are a few key classes <strong>to</strong> take after f<strong>in</strong>ish<strong>in</strong>g M<strong>at</strong>h 129A, 133A, and 161A, depend<strong>in</strong>g on<br />

wh<strong>at</strong> “flav<strong>or</strong>” of <strong>m<strong>at</strong>h</strong> maj<strong>or</strong> you choose <strong>to</strong> pursue.<br />

Applied <strong>m<strong>at</strong>h</strong>: Classes th<strong>at</strong> you should take <strong>to</strong> further your maj<strong>or</strong> <strong>in</strong> applied <strong>m<strong>at</strong>h</strong> <strong>in</strong>clude<br />

M<strong>at</strong>h 133B (Partial Differential Equ<strong>at</strong>ions), M<strong>at</strong>h 143C (Numerical Analysis and Scientific Comput<strong>in</strong>g,<br />

“solv<strong>in</strong>g differential equ<strong>at</strong>ions” version), and M<strong>at</strong>h 143M (Numerical Analysis and Scientific<br />

Comput<strong>in</strong>g, l<strong>in</strong>ear algebra version). Note th<strong>at</strong> because M<strong>at</strong>h 132 (Advanced Calculus) is rarely offered,<br />

many applied <strong>m<strong>at</strong>h</strong> maj<strong>or</strong>s end up tak<strong>in</strong>g M<strong>at</strong>h 131A (Introduction <strong>to</strong> Analysis I); see below<br />

f<strong>or</strong> notes on th<strong>at</strong> class.<br />

St<strong>at</strong>istics: Classes th<strong>at</strong> you should take <strong>to</strong> further your maj<strong>or</strong> <strong>in</strong> st<strong>at</strong>istics <strong>in</strong>clude M<strong>at</strong>h 161B<br />

(Applied St<strong>at</strong>istics II) and M<strong>at</strong>h 163 (Probability The<strong>or</strong>y). Also, f<strong>or</strong> the same reasons as applied<br />

<strong>m<strong>at</strong>h</strong> maj<strong>or</strong>s, see below f<strong>or</strong> notes on M<strong>at</strong>h 131A.<br />

Economics/F<strong>in</strong>ance/Actuarial Science: Classes th<strong>at</strong> you should take <strong>to</strong> further your maj<strong>or</strong><br />

<strong>in</strong>clude M<strong>at</strong>h 161B (Applied St<strong>at</strong>istics II) and M<strong>at</strong>h 163 (Probability The<strong>or</strong>y). There is also a heavy<br />

Economics/Bus<strong>in</strong>ess requirement, so you should start those classes early on.<br />

General <strong>m<strong>at</strong>h</strong>: If you maj<strong>or</strong> <strong>in</strong> <strong>m<strong>at</strong>h</strong> without a particular emphasis like applied <strong>m<strong>at</strong>h</strong> <strong>or</strong><br />

st<strong>at</strong>istics, you have a lot of freedom <strong>in</strong> choos<strong>in</strong>g which courses you want <strong>to</strong> take. The ma<strong>in</strong> issue then<br />

becomes our three ma<strong>in</strong> proof-<strong>in</strong>tensive classes: M<strong>at</strong>h 129B (L<strong>in</strong>ear Algebra II, <strong>or</strong> l<strong>in</strong>ear algebra with<br />

proofs), M<strong>at</strong>h 128A (Abstract Algebra I), and M<strong>at</strong>h 131A (Introduction <strong>to</strong> Analysis I). 2 These are<br />

probably the three most difficult and time-consum<strong>in</strong>g courses we teach <strong>in</strong> the <strong>SJSU</strong> undergradu<strong>at</strong>e<br />

<strong>m<strong>at</strong>h</strong> program, with M<strong>at</strong>h 129B be<strong>in</strong>g the most manageable of the three, and M<strong>at</strong>h 131A be<strong>in</strong>g the<br />

<strong>to</strong>ughest. It is theref<strong>or</strong>e probably a good idea <strong>to</strong> take these three courses <strong>in</strong> three different semesters,<br />

as tak<strong>in</strong>g two of them <strong>at</strong> the same time is a gigantic burden. So start tak<strong>in</strong>g one <strong>at</strong> a time, start<strong>in</strong>g<br />

with 129B, as soon as possible, while tak<strong>in</strong>g other classes, like M<strong>at</strong>h 126 (Number The<strong>or</strong>y), M<strong>at</strong>h 134<br />

(Dynamical Systems), M<strong>at</strong>h 138 (Complex Variables), M<strong>at</strong>h 142 (Introduction <strong>to</strong> Comb<strong>in</strong>a<strong>to</strong>rics),<br />

<strong>or</strong> any of the other classes listed above, <strong>to</strong> make suitable progress <strong>to</strong>wards f<strong>in</strong>ish<strong>in</strong>g.<br />

2 M<strong>at</strong>h 128A and M<strong>at</strong>h 131A are required f<strong>or</strong> the general <strong>m<strong>at</strong>h</strong> maj<strong>or</strong>. M<strong>at</strong>h 129B is not required, but many<br />

maj<strong>or</strong>s, <strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g applied maj<strong>or</strong>s, end up tak<strong>in</strong>g it anyway, especially s<strong>in</strong>ce M<strong>at</strong>h 129B is a better first proof class <strong>to</strong><br />

take.
