institution. Although not a part of the <strong>University</strong>’s formal governance structure, it<br />
does meet regularly to acquaint members with the institution’s progress and special<br />
concerns.<br />
During 1988-89, the Board of Visitors instituted a <strong>student</strong> internship program to<br />
expand the number of internships available to <strong>student</strong>s. This decision was reached,<br />
in part, as a result of the superb performance of several <strong>student</strong>s who had served as<br />
interns or employees with some of the firms and companies represented on the Board<br />
of Visitors. Also, the Board recognized the exemplary performance of <strong>student</strong>s and<br />
provides them with the opportunity to interact more informally with a Board of<br />
Visitors member of the recipient’s choice.<br />
national ALUMNI ASSOCIATION<br />
The <strong>Johnson</strong> C. <strong>Smith</strong> <strong>University</strong> National Alumni Association is an organization of<br />
graduates and former <strong>student</strong>s of the <strong>University</strong>, officials of the <strong>University</strong>, faculty,<br />
staff, and friends.<br />
Its purposes are as follow:<br />
Foster and maintain a strong spirit of loyalty and support for the institution among<br />
members;<br />
1. Promote fellowship and a spirit of camaraderie among alumni;<br />
2. Develop, cultivate, and maintain a strong liaison and spirit of camaraderie<br />
among alumni;<br />
3. Develop, cultivate, and maintain a strong liaison and spirit of cooperation<br />
between the administration, alumni, and friends;<br />
4. Actively encourage promising <strong>student</strong>s to attend the <strong>University</strong> by<br />
developing, establishing, and providing scholarships and other financial<br />
assistance to such <strong>student</strong>s;<br />
5. Support the United Negro College Fund National Alumni Council and<br />
the United Negro College Fund. Pre-Alumni Council.<br />
The National Alumni Association is national in scope, with local affiliate chapters<br />
throughout the United States<br />
UNIVERSITY COMMITTEES AND COUNCILS<br />
Functions and responsibilities in each operational division are facilitated through<br />
councils and/or standing committees, which are comprised of administration, faculty,<br />
staff, and <strong>student</strong>s. These committees are responsible to the President through<br />
the Vice President of the respective area. Vice Presidents are ex-officio members,<br />
without vote, on all councils and committees related to their respective divisions.<br />
Student membership is by appointment of the President upon recommendation<br />
