not embarrassing<br />
A website focusing on embarrassing<br />
health problems sees a team at Maverick<br />
Television in <strong>Birmingham</strong>, including two<br />
alumni, pick up an award for interactivity.<br />
The site is linked to <strong>the</strong> Channel 4 television<br />
series Embarrassing Bodies and allows<br />
people to get advice from doctors.<br />
Curtain goes up<br />
<strong>Birmingham</strong>’s George Cadbury Hall<br />
<strong>the</strong>atre home to <strong>the</strong> <strong>University</strong>’s Drama<br />
and Theatre Arts Department, reopens.<br />
The £1 million refurbishment means <strong>the</strong><br />
<strong>the</strong>atre is now excellently equipped to<br />
cater for undergraduate and postgraduate<br />
work. The opening is celebrated with a<br />
performance <strong>of</strong> The Threepenny Opera<br />
by Bertolt Brecht.<br />
New concert hall to open<br />
in 2012<br />
Plans to build a 450-seat concert hall<br />
on <strong>the</strong> <strong>University</strong>’s campus are given<br />
<strong>the</strong> go-ahead. The Chancellor’s Court<br />
Auditorium, with its associated research,<br />
teaching and rehearsal facilities, will house<br />
<strong>Birmingham</strong>’s internationally renowned<br />
Department <strong>of</strong> Music and complete <strong>the</strong><br />
Aston Webb semi-circle, which has been<br />
<strong>the</strong> heart <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>University</strong> since 1909.<br />
Alumni have <strong>the</strong> opportunity to name a<br />
seat in <strong>the</strong> auditorium to help raise funds<br />

Change at <strong>the</strong> top<br />
Pr<strong>of</strong>essor Michael Sterling (left) retires<br />
as Vice-Chancellor <strong>of</strong> <strong>Birmingham</strong> after<br />
eight years and hands over <strong>the</strong> reins to<br />
Pr<strong>of</strong>essor David Eastwood, previously<br />
Chief Executive <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Higher Education<br />
Funding Council for England. Pr<strong>of</strong>essor<br />
Sterling was instrumental in building<br />
<strong>Birmingham</strong>’s academic reputation and<br />
bringing <strong>the</strong> <strong>University</strong> to a position <strong>of</strong><br />
economic stability.<br />
Muirhead Tower reopens<br />
One <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>University</strong>’s most iconic buildings,<br />
<strong>the</strong> 16-storey Muirhead Tower, <strong>of</strong>ficially<br />
reopens following a two-year transformation.<br />
The £40 million refurbishment was made<br />
possible through funding from alumni,<br />
foundations and trusts and has created a<br />
modern, attractive space for teaching and<br />
research for <strong>the</strong> <strong>University</strong>’s Special Collections<br />
and <strong>the</strong> College <strong>of</strong> Social Sciences.<br />
UN Secretary General visits<br />
United Nations Secretary-General Ban<br />
Ki-moon visits <strong>the</strong> <strong>University</strong> to meet key<br />
figures including business leaders, leading<br />
academics and politicians from <strong>Birmingham</strong><br />
and <strong>the</strong> West Midlands. Speaking at a<br />
specially organised reception at <strong>the</strong> Barber<br />
Institute <strong>of</strong> Fine Arts, Dr Ban stressed <strong>the</strong><br />
need for global cooperation in tackling<br />
major issues.
