Laura Nichols and Devon Peck recently joined the firm of Hungerford Tomyn Lawrenson and Nichols. Jon Buysen returns to his old firm Stikeman Elliott after a stint at Lawson Lundell. The Honourable Lance Finch returned to Guild Yule on January 1, 2014, and will be associate counsel there. James M. Bond, Q.C., moves from McMillan to Alexander Holburn Beaudin + Lang. Jason Z. Murray joins Eyford Macaulay Shaw & Padmanabhan after a stint at Klein Lyons. Chris Beneteau moves to the employment law firm of Tevlin Gleadle from Lawson Lundell. Samantha P. Simpson moved her practice from North Shore Law to join Jenkins Marzban Logan in Vancouver. Kimberley J. Santerre moves from Jenkins Marzban Logan into the Interior to join Rush Ihas Hardwick in Kelowna. Amber C. Lo moved to Kerfoot, Burroughs & Co. after articling at Farris, Vaughan, Wills & Murphy. The Advocate regrets misspelling the name of the winner of the 2012 Advocate Short Story competition. Allan McDonell, Q.C., is the deserving winner, and his story “The Survey” appears at page 845 of the November 2013 issue. We regret the error and would also like to clarify that Allan formerly managed an 80-person litigation group at Russell & DuMoulin. He was not, however, managing partner. Lucky him. Madam Justice J. Miriam Gropper has been appointed an adjudicator under the Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act, R.S.B.C. 1996, c. 165. David Perry has been appointed as acting chair of the Hospital Appeal Board for six months. He replaces Derek Brindle, Q.C., who served two terms as chair. Thomas R. Humphries has been reappointed as a member of the Interior Patient Quality Review Board until October 15, 2014.

The Press Council is a selfregulatory body established in 1983 to promote ethical practices within the B.C. newspaper community and to serve as a forum for complaints against member newspapers. It created a code of practice for journalists. Brenda Edwards has been appointed a member of the board of directors at Restorative Justice Society Victoria. James D. Kondopulos of Roper Greyell, Kinji G. Bouchier of Lawson Lundell, Amandeep Sandhu of McMillan and Teresa Tomchak of Farris, Vaughan, Wills & Murphy were all recently named winners in Lexpert’s Rising Stars: Leading Lawyers Under 40 competition. They are all now recognized as among Canada’s leading lawyers under 40. That will only last so long. Don Yule, Q.C., of Guild Yule was awarded the Peter Hyndman award for mentoring at the VBA AGM on November 21, 2013. Chris Kelsey has been appointed as board chair and vice chair of St. Joseph’s General Hospital. St. Joseph’s is governed by a board of 12 appointed by the owner, the Bishop of Victoria, under authority of the Hospital Act and operates under an affiliation agreement with Island Health. The Western Canada General Counsel Awards were given out in Calgary on November 4, 2013. Salman Manki, corporate counsel with Westport Innovations Inc., received the Tomorrow’s Leader Award. Shannon Rogers, president and general counsel with Global Relay Communications Inc., received the Business Achievement Award. On November 8, 2013, the Honourable Christopher E. Hinkson, a judge of the Court of Appeal for British Columbia, was appointed Chief Justice of the Supreme Court of British Columbia to replace Mr. Justice Robert J. Bauman, who was appointed Chief Justice of British Columbia on June 7, 2013. The Honourable Richard B.T. Goepel, a judge of the Supreme Court of British Columbia, was appointed a judge of the Court of Appeal of British Columbia to replace Mr. Justice Christopher E.
