is the idea of ‘insertion.’ The vital fluids have inherent mobility. I assume<br />

Mendelsohn was thinking of the ram but did not explicitly refer to it. It is<br />

evident from his discussion of the subject that the pump concept had become<br />

suspect in his eyes.<br />

11. In Figure 1, 7 indicates the macula densa, an organ with closely packed<br />

epithelial cells. This is a chemical sense organ located in the angle between<br />

the two vessels with their different lumina. It has developed from the median<br />

layer in the wall of the afferent vessel. Every kidney contains 1 to 1.6 million<br />

of these sense organs. Depending on the sodium chloride concentration of<br />

the urine, they control blood pressure and blood volume in a process which<br />
