Strengthening Weak Hinges of a Cover<br />

Required Materials<br />

• Radiant Bond Glue • Waxed Paper<br />

• Plastic or Bone Folder<br />

• Mending Stick<br />

The first sign of trouble in a trade binding is a<br />

weak hinge. It calls for immediate correction<br />

and repair. Make it the responsibility of a staff<br />

member to inspect each book before it is put<br />

back on the shelf. If it has a weak hinge,<br />

repair it at once—it only takes a minute.<br />

Follow these instructions:<br />

Open the book in upright position so<br />

the cloth back separates from the<br />

body. Now using a mending stick<br />

apply Radiant Bond carefully to the<br />

hinge area of the book spine only.<br />

Work half way down from one end,<br />

then reverse the book and work<br />

from the other end. If paper lining of<br />

cover and mull have pulled loose,<br />

apply Radiant Bond with narrow<br />

brush and adhere both to cover.<br />

Insert a sheet of waxed paper<br />

between each cover and contents.<br />

Close book. Be careful not to apply<br />

to the inside of the cloth spine or the<br />

the back of the signatures.<br />

Press book well into cover. Use flat<br />

edge of plastic folder to score hinges.<br />

If paper lining of cover is broken or<br />

torn, reinforce entire length of hinge<br />

with 1-1/2" wide White Paper or Cloth<br />

Hinge Tape.<br />
