Building a society<br />

of tru s t<br />

Since Norberto O<strong>deb</strong><strong>re</strong><strong>cht</strong> left the chairmanship of<br />

O d e b <strong>re</strong><strong>cht</strong> S.A. in 1998, he has devoted himself<br />

exclusively to the <strong>social</strong> p<strong>rojects</strong> of the O<strong>deb</strong><strong>re</strong> c h t<br />

Foundation, of which he is P<strong>re</strong>sident. He has <strong>re</strong> f l e c t e d<br />

m o <strong>re</strong> deeply about sustainable <strong>development</strong> and<br />

f o rmulated a firm view on the subject: “Development<br />

chiefly means human <strong>development</strong>, which <strong>re</strong> q u i <strong>re</strong>s the<br />

actualization of all facets of the individual in the moral<br />

and material sphe<strong>re</strong>s.” And he alerts, “Instead of<br />

guiding people, we must trust them. When we trust people<br />

we deconcentrate, decentralize, delegate, partnerize, part a k e<br />

and sha<strong>re</strong>.” In this interview he undersco<strong>re</strong>s the role<br />

of the Third Sector in Brazil, observes that poor<br />

<strong>re</strong>gions of Brazil need thousands of small<br />

e n t <strong>re</strong> p <strong>re</strong>neurs working to develop<br />

p roductive capital and human, <strong>social</strong><br />

and environmental capital, and<br />

<strong>re</strong> a ff i rms his life’s d<strong>re</strong>am: building<br />

a society of tru s t .
