Building a society
of tru s t
Since Norberto Odebrecht left the chairmanship of
O d e b recht S.A. in 1998, he has devoted himself
exclusively to the social projects of the Odebre c h t
Foundation, of which he is President. He has re f l e c t e d
m o re deeply about sustainable development and
f o rmulated a firm view on the subject: “Development
chiefly means human development, which re q u i res the
actualization of all facets of the individual in the moral
and material spheres.” And he alerts, “Instead of
guiding people, we must trust them. When we trust people
we deconcentrate, decentralize, delegate, partnerize, part a k e
and share.” In this interview he underscores the role
of the Third Sector in Brazil, observes that poor
regions of Brazil need thousands of small
e n t re p reneurs working to develop
p roductive capital and human, social
and environmental capital, and
re a ff i rms his life’s dream: building
a society of tru s t .
