GOVERNMENT OF interest SPRINGTIME IS IN THE AIR … LET THE CONSTRUCTION PROJECTS BEGIN As spring approaches, you may begin thinking about construction projects you are planning to undertake. As you begin conceptualizing and designing the implementation of your project, many questions come to mind: What is the size and scope of the project? What construction materials will be used? Where will the project be built? What will the completed project look like? The Community Development Department can assist you in the preparation of your planned improvement project. GV NEED TO KNOWS BEFORE YOU BEGIN PROJECT Q: Why do I need a building permit? A: A permit is generally required for any new building, addition, alteration, repair or change in use of an existing building or structure and site improvements. A building permit is required to protect the health, safety and well being of you and the community by ensuring that all construction is completed with minimum safety standards. Please call Community Development at 303-486-5783 before you begin any work. Q: What are some residential projects which may require a building permit? A: Residential examples may include: re-roof; interior remodel; window replacement, water heater replacement, fences, basement finish, decks, patio covers, and landscaping. Permits are generally not required for painting, floor coverings, other similar finish work and kitchen cabinet installation (plumbing permit may be required for the re-installation of fixtures). Q: What types of drawings, plans, site plans, or other paper work are required? A: Please contact Community Development at 303-486-5783 for specific submittal requirements. Q: My contractor has told me that I do not need a permit for this work. Can I rely on this information? A: As a precaution, please contact Community Development to verify whether or not a building permit is required. Q: Will the Homeowners Association need to be contacted for approval? A: Generally, yes. Q: How long will the permitting process take? A: The typical processing time for most residential projects is threefive days. Q: How much will the building permit cost? A: Permit fees are calculated based upon the contract price and valuation of the proposed project. Building fees generally include a permit fee which is based on contract price; a plan review fee which is 65 percent of permit fee; and the Building Materials Use Tax which is 3.25 percent of materials cost. All fees are paid prior to the issuance of the building permit. Q: How is building materials use tax calculated? A: Building Materials Use Tax is calculated based on the contract price which includes the total cost of the project, including building Building permits are required for a variety of home improvement projects. Building Materials Use Tax applies to the building permit with a contract price in excess of $5,833. The Building Materials Use Tax is 3.25 percent, of which 3 percent is the Village’s Use Tax and 0.25 percent is designated to Arapahoe County Open Space Tax. The estimated tax due is 3.0 percent of 60 percent of the cost of construction. The first $3,500 of building materials is exempt. Taxexempt entities such as government agencies and religious and charitable organizations are exempt from the Building Materials Use Tax. A sponsorship opportunity is available at each lunch for $200. • Quarterly Chamber Luncheon — February 24, May 26, August 25, December 2, 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Cost charged per person needs to be under $20. Three sponsorship opportunities are available for each lunch at $1,000 each. • Monthly Breakfast — February 10, April 14, June 9, August 11, October 13, December 8, 8 to 9:30 a.m. Cost charged per person needs to be under $10. A sponsorship opportunity is available at each breakfast for $200. • Women’s After Hours Networking Group — Third Tuesday of every month 5:30-7:30 p.m. Free or discounted appetizers and drink specials are a requirement for hosting. A sponsorship opportunity is available at each BAH for $200. Each BAH is partnered with a noprofit. • Road to the Taste (Feb.-Aug.) — Fourth Wednesday of every month, 4 to 7:30 p.m. Please call the Chamber office for the requirements and details to host.
