Low German in December 1495, only ten
months after this version had appeared in
Cologne for the first time in February of the
same year. His success is obvious from the
present edition, a reprint of his first within two
years. The earlier editions are not represented
in the British Library.

While the present Missal was being printed
an outbreak of the plague forced the wellestablished
Leipzig printer Conrad Kachelofen
to move his press a respectable distance out of
the city to the smaller town of Freiberg. He
completed here only the present Missal which
was commissioned by the Bishop of Meissen for
the use of his diocese.

The above collation applies to the copy of this
book bought by the British Museum in May
1931 (IB.51308). In the present copy quire h
collates simply h^"^, and it contains therefore 150
leaves. This is, however, far from being the only
difference between the copies. For about half
the book the two copies have different typesetting.
The variant typesetting has a curious distribution,
which shows that it was done virtually
simultaneously, as work shared between
two compositors. Comparison of the two copies
may therefore throw light on the practice of
parallel typesetting of which other instances are
known in the fifteenth century.
Bound together witb three sixteenth-century
books in a sixteenth-century quarter binding of
white pigskin over wooden boards, tooled in
blind and black with the arms of Hcsscn in the
centre.
