MICHAEL SLOTE is Professor of Philosophy and Chair<br />
of the Department of Philosophy at the University of<br />
Maryland, College Park. Until recently he was Professor<br />
of Philosophy at Trinity College, Dublin, where he<br />
was also a Fellow. Professor <str<strong>on</strong>g>Slote</str<strong>on</strong>g> took his A.B. and<br />
Ph.D. degrees from Harvard University and has also<br />
taught at Columbia University, the University of Pennsylvania,<br />
Swarthmore College, and New York State<br />
University. He has recently written Goods and Virtues<br />
( 1983) and Comm<strong>on</strong>-Sense Morality and C<strong>on</strong>sequentialism<br />
(1985), as well as a number of articles <strong>on</strong> practical<br />
rati<strong>on</strong>ality and utilitarian moral theory. Professor<br />
<str<strong>on</strong>g>Slote</str<strong>on</strong>g> is a member of the Royal Irish Academy.
