Letter from the Director
A
merica has made three great contributions to the
performing arts: jazz, modern dance and musical
theater. Much like our melting pot, musical theater is a
diverse fusion, combining British Music Hall, European
operetta, African American rhythms, Vaudevillian humor and
American popular song. Broadway was the artistic playground for
the icons of American culture, greats such as George and Ira
Gershwin, Cole Porter, Irving Berlin, Richard Rodgers and Oscar
Hammerstein. They were the stars of popular music and
simultaneously defined a new art form, which in both content and
form reflected a fusion of diverse cultures.
For the last 15 years, Theater Latté Da has been re-imagining work
from the golden age of the American musical theater as well as the
work of our living playwrights, composers and lyricists. An incredible gift of a life in the
theater is the privilege of working intimately with voices of the past. I often feel like I am in
dialogue or even rigorous debate with the poetry of Oscar Hammerstein, the musical
vocabulary of Irving Berlin or the dramatic structure of Stephen Sondheim. Theater Latté
Da’s partnership with Hennepin Theatre Trust is the next phase of that exploration, allowing
us to expand our theatrical vocabulary and speak to a broader audience.
Elton John and Tim Rice’s Aida is a story rich with things to say about slavery and freedom,
colonialization, patriotism and personal integrity. Set in ancient Egypt, it inspires great
theatrical imagination. And set to the music by Elton John, a living icon of popular music, it
inspires a heightened and dynamic emotional authenticity. The juxtaposition of Ancient
Egypt and contemporary western pop may seem like a disconnect between content and form,
but this unlikely fusion is at the heart of the American musical.
When I begin to re-imagine a given work, I ask myself a series of questions: Why does our
community need to experience this story now? If the characters were left to their own devices,
what tools would they have to tell their story? What are potential visual metaphors for the
ideological themes of a given work? And, ultimately, what can live theater do that film and
television cannot?
Film and television are literal art forms, while the theater thrives on metaphor, and
imagination. For me, the design process is as much about what’s not onstage as what is. My
goal is to trigger the audience’s imagination in order for them to complete our telling of the
story. The theater is a two-way street; it is only complete when the audience meets you
halfway. I’m glad you’re here.
elcome to the intimate and historic 1916 Pantages
Theatre for Elton John and Tim Rice’s Aida. This
fresh look at the Tony Award-winning musical is the
premiere production in our Broadway Re-Imagined
series, a new collaboration with Twin Cities theatre company
Theater Latté Da. Imaginatively directed by Latté Da’s artistic
director, Peter Rothstein, Aida is based on a timeless love story
drawn from the Giuseppi Verdi opera. The tale unfolds in the
Egyptian wing of a modern museum, when a man and a
woman catch each other’s eyes and are magically transported to
ancient Egypt. Thus begins a dramatic love story between
Radames, the captain of the Egyptian army, and Aida, the captured Nubian princess. After
debuting on Broadway in 2000, Aida won the Tony Award for Best Musical Score and the
Grammy Award for Best Musical Show Album. I am delighted that you have joined us to
experience a new look at this spectacular and “re-imagined” production.
Hennepin Theatre Trust has a long history of forming local partnerships with such
prestigious organizations as The Jungle Theater, The Loft Literary Center, Theater Latté Da,
Cantus, The History Theatre, Actors Theatre of Minnesota, Chanhassen Dinner Theatres,
The Guthrie Theater, and a host of local performing artists. The impetus for our new
collaboration with Theater Latté Da through Broadway Re-Imagined builds upon our
successful partnership in producing All Is Calm: The Christmas Truce of 1914 (co-presented
with Cantus) over the past four years. Our new Broadway Re-imagined series melds the
Trust’s deep experience with Broadway tours, concerts and variety showcases to support the
engagement of audiences in the unparalleled work of local individuals and groups like
Theater Latté Da, who bring their passion, intellect and talent to bear in reinventing the
classic works of musical theatre.
Each magnificent historic theatre on Hennepin Avenue has its own distinct personality and
the intimate and nearly century-old Pantages Theatre, with its stunning stained glass dome,
is a superb venue in which to explore this new art form, introduce a broader range of Twin
Cities audiences to the treasures of downtown Minneapolis and achieve our mission of
presenting a rich mix of live performances. The Trust anticipates co-producing at least one
show annually with Theater Latté Da through this new venture so stay tuned for more to
come! To be notified of upcoming performances, please join our weekly email list by visiting
our website at http://www.hennepintheatretrust.org/connect. Thanks again for kicking off
the New Year by joining us at the Pantages Theatre. Enjoy the show!
THEATER LATTÉ DA (Producer) Founded
by Peter Rothstein and Denise Prosek,
Theater Latté Da is now celebrating its 15th
year of combining music and story to
illuminate the breadth of the human condition.
One of the most celebrated companies in the
vibrant Twin Cities arts community, Theater
Latté Da has garnered critical acclaim and
earned a host of awards including 4 Ivey
Awards, the Gabriel Award for Broadcast
Excellence and regular “Best of the Year”
nods from the media. Throughout its
relatively brief history, TLD has received over
70 honors and awards for its exceptional
work. TLD stands out as a bold innovator,
investing in the art of musical theater and
taking it to new heights for Twin Cities area
audiences and beyond. Theater Latté Da
remains committed to a rigorous
experimentation and creates work that speaks
to a contemporary audience, challenging us to
think deeply about the world in which we live.
In 1998, Theater Latté Da began performing
at the intimate 120-seat Loring Playhouse. By
2007, Theater Latté Da productions were
playing to sold-out houses and they began
searching for spaces with different
performance configurations to meet the
unique aesthetic demands of each production.
Since 2007, Theater Latté Da has produced
shows at the Guthrie Theater, Ordway Center,
Pantages Theatre, Southern Theater, History
Theatre, Fitzgerald Theater, the Rarig Center
THE STATE, ORPHEUM & PANTAGES THEATRES
The following information is provided to help you familiarize yourself with our facilities and services. Our goal is to provide you with personalized service to ensure
that your theatre experience exceeds your expectations. In order to serve you most effectively, please do not hesitate to address questions, comments, or requests
for specific assistance to any of the ushering staff.
CAMERAS • The use of cameras or other types of recording equipment
is strictly prohibited.
CANCELLATIONS • For one night events, please check the event description
for postponements or cancellations.
CELLULAR PHONES AND PAGERS • The ringing of cellular phones or
pagers can be highly disruptive during a performance. These devices should
be turned off or turned to vibrate mode while at the theatre. If necessary,
a cellular phone or pager can be monitored by the Event Manager.
CHILDREN • Children under the age of six are encouraged to attend the
theatres only for special children’s events. Everyone entering the theatre
must have a ticket. For the comfort and enjoyment of all guests, children
who are disruptive to other guests will be asked to leave the seating area.
Infants will not be allowed admission to Broadway performances.
DONOR PROGRAM • Hennepin Theatre Trust Donors experience special
benefits and have access to exclusive events while also supporting
the Trust’s education programming and the preservation of the State, Orpheum
and Pantages Theatres. Visit our website to learn more about becoming
a Donor.
DRESS CODE • While our theatres have no specific dress code, we
find that many of our patrons like to dress up to celebrate attending
a special event. The most important thing is to dress appropriately for
a special occasion.
EDUCATION • Hennepin Theatre Trust’s education department strives to
engage audiences of all ages through a variety of educational and outreach
programs. Visit our website to learn more.
EMERGENCIES • The telephone number for emergency messages is:
(612) 339-7007, ext 450. Emergency messages are delivered immediately
during performances when seat locations are known. Persons expecting
emergency messages are asked to leave their seat locations in
advance with the calling party and with the Box Office upon arrival.
EXCHANGES • Tickets may be exchanged to another performance of
the same show in person at the box office at least 24 hours prior to the
currently scheduled performance. Exchanges are subject to availability,
and are assessed a $5.00 per ticket exchange fee. If the patron exchanges
into a more expensive performance, they must pay the difference
in ticket price. There is no refund for exchanging into a less
expensive performance. There are NO exchanges on Group Sales or
Comp tickets.
FIRST AID • First aid supplies are available at all theatres. Ask any
usher for assistance. There is a security officer trained in CPR and First
Aid on duty at every performance from the time the lobbies open until
all guests have exited.
FOOD AND BEVERAGES • A variety of beverages including wine,
beer and soft drinks and light snacks including mints and cookies are
available for purchase in the theatre. No outside food or beverages are
allowed in the theatre.
owner of the historic Orpheum, State, Pantages and the newly developed
New Century Theatres, is dedicated to enriching the vibrant cultural
atmosphere of the Twin Cities. We present a rich array of live
performances, create inspiring arts education experiences and advance
a thriving cultural destination in downtown Minneapolis. Our programs
include Broadway touring productions, the Broadway Confidential series,
our SpotLight Musical Theatre Program for high schools, the Critical
View student reviewer program, our free ticket Access Program and
Kids’ Night and leading the planning for the cultural corridor that will extend
from the Walker Art Center to the Mississippi Riverfront.
LOBBIES • Lobbies are open to the public approximately one hour prior to
showtime. Theatre seating traditionally begins 30 minutes prior to showtime.
LOST AND FOUND • Please notify any usher immediately upon discovery
of lost or found articles. After a performance, you may call the
Box Office at 612. 339.7007.
RE-ENTRY INTO THE THEATRE • Please see an usher if you would
like to exit and re-enter the theatre.
RESTROOM LOCATIONS • Restrooms are located inside the ticketed area
of each theatre, please see an usher for direction to the nearest restroom.
SEASON TICKETS • Season Tickets and flexible Pick Your Package
options are available for Hennepin Theatre Trust’s Broadway series. Visit
our website to learn more.
SECONDARY TICKET MARKET • Consumer Warning - the State,
Orpheum and Pantages Theatres use bar code scanning for ticket admissions.
As a result, patrons should be careful when purchasing tickets
and should make sure the seller is a State, Orpheum or Pantages
Theatre licensed contractor, otherwise, you may be purchasing a ticket
that is invalid and will be denied admission.
Ticketmaster is the ONLY authorized ticketing agent outside of the State Theatre
Box Office. If you purchase tickets from an unauthorized agent in the
secondary market (Scalper, Ticket Broker, eBay, Craigslist, etc.), you risk
purchasing counterfeit or invalid tickets. If you wish to purchase tickets from
the secondary market, we encourage the use of TicketExchange.
TicketExchange is Ticketmaster’s online service that enables premium
and fan-to-fan transactions. Only Ticketmaster can guarantee
100% legitimate secondary market tickets, because the tickets
sold through TicketExchange are linked to Ticketmaster’s barcoded
ticketing systems. Visit our website for more information on TicketExchange.
SEATING • Guests arriving after the start of the performance will be
seated at the discretion of management, in accordance to the wishes of
the performing company. These times vary with each production. Please
plan to allow plenty of time for parking.
SMOKING • The State, Orpheum & Pantages Theatres & their lobbies
are entirely smoke-free.
TICKETS • Tickets can be purchased in person at the State Theatre Box
Office, by phone through the Ticketmaster Artsline, online through Ticketmaster.com
or through Ticketmaster outlets.
is easy! Our standard group minimum is 15 people, but may vary with scheduled. Visit our website for the show you are scheduled to attend or
