12” Indian Summer block
We found three sensational fabric lines to showcase
the versatility of one stunning quilt block by paperpiece
designer Beth Maddock, an American living
in Switzerland. Originally created as a sun block for
a house quilt, Beth calls this one “Indian Summer”,
and describes it as “round overall but much more easily
constructed than a Compass or New York Beauty block.”
A master at paper piecing, she finds it ”addictive,” and
“relaxing,” offering greater precision for complex designs
than any other method. Find lots of free blocks for paper
piecing on Beth Maddock’s website: piecebynumber.com
The actual block is the quarter square, which does some
interesting things when, combined with its mirror image
of the block--it creates a very geometric “God’s eye” type
of design with an entirely different look than the sun
image.

Go to www.quiltmag.com/resources/quilt90-paper-piecing/ for detailed instructions on paper-piecing.
Following paper-piecing instructions, begin by sewing pieces #1 and #2 to the wrong side of the foundation
pattern below. Trim and press open.
Add piece #3, trim and press open. Continue adding pieces in numerical order to complete a quarter square.
Trim the square on the outside dashed line to measure 6-1/2”. (Make 4 quarter squares.)
Lay out the (4) quarter squares in (2) rows of (2) squares each, noting the orientation of each square. Sew
the squares together in each row. Join the rows to make an Indian Summer block.
