From the
Rector
Thanks to the generosity of our many donors, some wonderful
things have been happening at Exeter College in the past year.
In particular, we have become the owners
of the thrilling site on Walton Street that
will become our New Quad – a move we
would never have dared to make without
the support and help of our alumni and
friends. And we have completed our
beautiful new graduate campus on the
Iffley Road, giving us some of the best
graduate accommodation in the University
– or indeed the country. Again, this is the
result of the generosity of our alumni and
friends.
We are immensely grateful for this
level of support. It puts us, as far as
I can determine, in second place
among all major institutions of higher
education outside the United States.
But your philanthropy does not just
benefit these large projects. Every week,
we draw on our Annual Fund, into which
hundreds of Old Members, Parents
and Friends of the College pay regular
amounts. The Annual Fund contributes
to many of the College’s most important
activities: our invaluable but expensive
tutorial system; the Turl Street Arts
Festival, which brings the three Turl Street
colleges together for a week of music,
theatre and fun; the hardship grant which
stops a student fretting about finding the
money for rent instead of concentrating
on revision; the sports equipment that
benefits our rowers, rugby players and
runners; the Chapel Choir’s tour to the
United States.
The Annual Fund has just had its best
year ever. Not only did the gross amount
raised soar by £100,000 over the previous
year’s total, but the proportion of alumni
2
E X E T E R C O L L E G E D O N O R S ’ R E P O R T | 1 0
who give to it has increased from 20% to
22%. Some years, as you can see from
looking through this report, have done
even better. Perhaps most impressive
of all is the contribution of this year’s
Leavers, 56% of whom made a gift to
the College. Between them, they raised a
total of £673 which was then matched by
additional gifts by two Old Members.
We are immensely grateful for this level
of support. It puts us, as far as I can
determine, in second place among all
major institutions of higher education
outside the United States. But I would like
us to do even better – and move into first
place.
conversation with an Old Member. And
of course, the telethon also gives our Old
Members a chance to hear how College
has changed since their day – and how it
remains very much the same.
Thank you for all that your generosity
makes possible. The whole College is
grateful for your continuing support.
RECTOR
Our participation rate is important,
because it shows larger donors that they
are not carrying the College alone.
One of our great successes in the past
year has been our 1314 Society, to which
we ask supporters to make an annual gift
of £1,314 (less if they fall into one of the
younger categories). The Society now
has 168 members, and we are working
to create new benefits for those who
join, to recognise their philanthropy.
Another success is our annual telephone
campaign. It brings all sorts of unexpected
benefits. One or two students have found
their careers as a result of a telethon
College Finances
by William Jensen
The College was pleased to record a surplus
for the year to 31 July 2010, against a very
conservative budget which anticipated a deficit.
An exceptional effort to keep every room filled
and an increase in charges for commercial
conferences and banqueting, combined with
a tight control on costs, has improved the
Accommodation and Catering account. The
development of Exeter House, the College’s
splendid graduate accommodation, significantly
increases our capacity, but will also require some
additional staff to maintain. Cataloguing the early
printed book collection has added to Library
costs and increasing the capacity and activity
of the Development Office to drive the Exeter
Excelling campaign is reflected in the numbers. A
tremendous benefit of this focus on development
Exeter College now has its own trading
subsidiary – ‘Exeter College Trading
Limited’. The company started trading
on 1 August 2010 and all of the College’s
commercial conferences and functions
will now be channelled through this
body. This new company ensures that we
are complying with Charities legislation,
and it also provides assurance that all
of our commercial activity is profitable
and is not a burden on the College and
its charitable assets. All profits from the
company are Gift-Aided back to Exeter
College and used to fund the College’s
core activities.
was that the Annual Fund brought in £63,000
more than budgeted.
The Annual Fund, excluding other specific
donations, achieved an amazing £483,781
through the generosity of the Exeter community.
The College has no control over academic fee
income, and income from the endowment and
commercial trading are driven by the economic
environment. The Annual Fund thus enables
the College to continue supporting activity which
otherwise would be unsustainable. For Exeter,
£483,000 of Annual Fund income is equivalent
to the income that would be generated from an
additional £15 million of endowment assets.
In the past year, global equity markets staged
a recovery, but generally the mood with most
investors is extremely cautious. The Investment
Committee maintained higher cash reserves,
both to protect against volatility and to preserve
investment flexibility. In the year, the endowment
recorded a total return of 14%, after a transfer of
£1.55 million to the College revenue account, and
the value at 31 July was £46.9 million.
During the year, the College drew on a £12
million loan facility to complete Exeter House
and begin the payments for Ruskin College’s site
on Walton Street. The loan will be substantially
utilised by the end of the 2010/11 financial year,
adding some £630,000 of annual interest charges
to expenditure. We are braced for a material
reduction in academic income following the
Spending Review on public funding in Higher
Education. For these reasons, the Annual Fund
and fundraising for the Walton Street project will
be central to our financial planning.
The Exeter College
Annual Fund
2009/10 marked a memorable year for
the Annual Fund: thanks to the generous
donations of our Old Members, Parents
and Friends we raised a total of £483,781
in unrestricted income, an incredible
£100,000 more than last year’s total and
more than £60,000 over our original target
of £420,000.
Exeter’s overall participation rate among
Old Members has risen from 20% to 22%,
with 1,316 individuals making a gift to
College. The size of the average gift also
increases every year: this year it was £363,
£113 more than last year’s average.
We have the second highest participation
rate in academic institutions outside the
United States (behind University College)–
a truly remarkable achievement.
The graphs below underline how income
to the Annual Fund has increased over
the last eight years, and the Donations by
Stream graph shows how the College’s
revenue is divided between Annual Fund
donations, Endowment and Capital Gifts,
of which we received a significant number
this year.
Eliminating Student
Hardship
The Annual Fund allows Exeter to
encourage outstanding students from poor
backgrounds to apply, with the reassurance
that they will be well taken care of when
they arrive in Oxford. Last year, 12 Exonian
the generosity of our Old Members.
Our ninth telethon campaign took place
in January 2010 when 13 student callers
picked up the phones to speak to Old
Members around the world. 45% of the
648 who spoke to a student decided to
support Exeter by making a gift, raising
a total of £144,659. This is £12,770
more than the total raised last year. The
generosity of our Old Members and their
enthusiasm at hearing College news from
our current students is very encouraging
in these difficult economic times – 58
donors even chose to make a long term
commitment to Exeter by setting up
standing orders or direct debits. Thank
you very much to everybody who took the
time to speak to one of our student callers.
“I really enjoyed my time working as a caller on
the telethon last year. I would like to thank all
of the people that I spoke with; it is wonderful
to hear how precious people’s memories of
Exeter are. As a student who received a
hardship bursary, I am particularly grateful
for the generosity of the Old Members of the
College. Without the bursary I would not have
been able to continue my studies here. Your
continuing support makes a real difference to
the current students’ welfare and provides them
with opportunities that they would not otherwise
receive.”
Ensuring Academic
Excellence
Income provided by the Annual Fund is
essential to safeguarding the unique and
personal experience of the tutorial, which
Exeter strongly believes is the finest form
of teaching available to undergraduates.
A F E L L O W T A K E S A W H I M S I C A L
L O O K A T T H E T U T O R I A L …
Why I still love giving tutorials after 25
years at Exeter is that you have a chance
to discuss a subject you really like with
intelligent people: to try out ideas with
them, to do things with their ideas, and
to watch them growing in assurance, skill,
and depth. Fortunately, they seem to
enjoy it too; that’s partly because this form
of learning is so active. It’s like cooking
some difficult cake, if you’re not very
experienced. You could read how to do it
from a book, or you could watch someone
else doing it; but what you’d prefer is
having a go yourself, with an experienced
cake-maker to comment and correct.
We’re so grateful to the people who help
us to keep helping students create and
learn by giving to the Annual Fund, which
supports the tutorial system at Exeter.
Enhancing the
Exeter is committed to providing its
The Careers Office is unique amongst the
Oxford Colleges, both in its level of activity
and in the attention it pays to individual
students. Thanks to the generosity of Old
Members, at a time when many young
people are struggling with a recession-hit
job market, the Careers Office at Exeter
provides vital resources and opportunities
to equip students with the skills they need
to thrive in their chosen career. That there
should be such a successful and diverse
programme at Exeter is testament to a body
of Old Members who are accomplished,
generous and engaged in College life.
Without their support the Careers
programme at Exeter would not exist.
Leavers’ Gift
This year, thanks to the encouragement
of four of our leaving students, a large
number of finalists chose to support
Exeter by making a gift to the Annual
Fund. Patrick Howard, Felix Leach, Ed
Moores and Piers Taylor worked tirelessly
in sending round e-mails, distributing
flyers, and raising awareness of the role
which the Annual Fund has played in
enhancing student life over the last three
years.
56% of our departing undergraduates,
along with some graduates and Williams
students, made a gift, with 40 students
joining the 1314 Society by making a
donation of £13.14 or more. The total
raised was £673, £114 more than was
raised last year.
Special thanks go to the two Old Members
who each year support this initiative by
matching the total raised. This is a real
incentive to the students to participate in
the enterprise at the level which they can
afford.
It is very heartening to see such
commitment to Exeter from our departing
students, all the more so when the
majority have not even secured a job yet.
Their philanthropy is an inspiration to
the whole Exonian community and will
encourage Old Members who have not yet
donated to Exeter to make their first gift.
1314 Society
Three years since its launch, the 1314
Society is more popular than ever with
Exeter’s Old Members. The jewel in
the crown of Annual Fund Giving, it
recognises donors who give a memorable
sum to the causes supported by the
Annual Fund. To join the 1314 Society, a
donor gives a minimum of £1,314 (gross)
in a financial year, with incentive rates for
students and Old Members under 30.
This year 168 members have enlisted, 41
more than last year, and a number of our
leaving students chose to join by donating
£13.14, the discounted rate for students.
1314 members will receive a letter from
the Rector, a pin and a certificate in the
financial year in which they have made
their donation. They will also be invited to
an exclusive annual event in College.
“I chose to support Exeter by joining the 1314
Society because I believe it extremely important
that Oxford, through its Colleges, should continue
to thrive as a leading University in the UK.
Without support from those who have been
fortunate enough to attend Exeter this is made
much more challenging given the funding cuts
facing the University.”
Disbursement
Donations to the Annual Fund are
unrestricted although donors are invited to
express a preference as to how their gift is
used. These preferences include tutorial
support, student support (scholarships,
hardships bursaries and travel grants),
College facilities (including the Library
and Chapel), student clubs and societies
(including sport), and student career
development. From this financial year,
a proportion of Annual Fund income is
being used to support the purchase and
redevelopment of the Walton St site.
The preferences expressed by donors are
reflected in how the gifts are disbursed each
year. What is especially encouraging is that
the majority of donors to the Annual Fund
(77% in 2009/10) chose to direct their gift
to ‘wherever the need is greatest’ or did not
express a preference at all.
Making a
Difference
In last year’s Donors’ Report, we reported the creation, by Liz Wood, of a Bursary
for students reading French, set up in memory of her husband, Chris Wood (1960,
Modern Languages). Here, the first beneficiary of the Bursary reports on the
difference it made to his studies.
It was a great honour to be selected
as this year’s beneficiary of the Chris
Wood Bursary. As a third year student
of French and Linguistics, currently
on my Year Abroad, I appreciate the
timely financial support which proved
to be extremely helpful at the beginning
of my Erasmus year in Paris, where
student housing is infamously difficult.
The unexpected long stay in a hostel,
the transport fees for house viewings,
the overpriced phone top-up cards all
contributed to the inevitably excessive
expenditures I was faced with before
settling down. Without the Bursary
I would have been in a much more
difficult situation with financial worries.
Moreover, the Bursary continues to offer
great help with the purchase of academic
books and materials, and I am certain
that the financial support will motivate
me more to realise the travel plans I have
for this year. Therefore I am extremely
grateful to Mrs Wood for her generosity
in setting up this fund in memory of her
late husband.
Volunteers
Now that the College is in Campaign mode, our volunteers are
more active than ever.
Our Year Group Reps are responsible for
reaching out to their peers and keeping
them in touch with College happenings.
The success of this year’s Annual Fund was
due in no small part to the creativity and
enthusiasm of those volunteers who sent
personalised e-mails to their peers stressing
the importance of making a participatory
gift to support Exeter.
We still have some year groups without
volunteers: 1961, 1972, 1981, 1982, 1988,
1990, 1993, 1994, 1995, 1996, 2000, 2003,
2005, 2007, 2008. If you wish to enrol as
a volunteer for one of these years, please
contact the Development Office.
Thank you very much to those who give
their time to Exeter.
I first reconnected with Exeter as a
volunteer about 10 years ago. A student
called me during the telethon and I began
to learn how College had changed and
what had stayed the same. I later hosted a
couple of North American Travel Scholars
and was impressed by the young men and
women Exeter was sending out into the
world.
I valued my time as an undergraduate and
I appreciate the many intellectual and life
opportunities it opened up for me. It has
become important to me to try to repay
some of the benefits I received to current
and future generations. With that in mind,
I have reached out to peers to encourage
them to consider getting more involved
with the College by contributing to the
Annual Fund and in other ways, and a few
years ago I joined the Campaign Steering
Committee. I have learned more about
where the College is heading and I am
excited by the Rector’s ambitions for the
future.
It is rewarding to have rejoined the College
community not least because I have been
able to connect with Old Members from
many decades, based on our shared
experience of, and interest in, a place that
was special to us all. These connections,
and the sense of continuity with 700 years
of history and a hopeful future, enhance
what might otherwise just be the memory
of my undergraduate years. I would
encourage anyone interested in the College
to reach out to peers and to other Old
Members. I know the Development Office
is always looking for volunteers, and there
are many opportunities to contribute.
Leaving a legacy or bequest is a wonderful way to support Exeter
and allows us to establish scholarships, carry out much needed
refurbishment or direct funds to the area of greatest need.
Your bequest ensures that generations of students to come will benefit from the same
experience and education enjoyed by all of our Old Members. We are very grateful to
all those who remembered Exeter in their wills and are delighted to take the opportunity
to honour them below. A further 18 Old Members in the past year have informed us
that they are leaving a legacy to Exeter. If you would like more information about leaving
a legacy to Exeter, please contact the Development Office.
Major Gifts
by Katrina Hancock, Director of Development
It might seem a little daunting to launch the Exeter Excelling
Campaign in September 2009 to raise £45m while the
economy still faces upheavals and every College budget has
been restricted or cut.
But a long history of philanthropic support
and a tradition of generosity have provided
a solid foundation on which we know we
can rely.
More than ever before the Annual Fund
has played a vital role in funding oneto-one
tutorials, revision classes, and
guaranteeing hardship support for all who
need it. In addition to this vital, regular
support are those whose philanthropy has
supported a specific area of the Campaign
such as scholarships, the purchase of the
Walton Street site and focused support
for the tutorial system, some of whom are
highlighted here.
Alan Lammin’s (1974, Modern Languages)
generous creation of the Mandarin
Scholarship has brought us Xinyuan Zheng
from the People’s Republic of China to
study Earth Sciences. Similarly, Richard
Mahoney (Friend) has continued his
support of Emily O’Brien who is studying
International Relations with a focus on
Churchill, and Peter Thompson (Friend)
has supported Daniel Koffler in his final
year reading Philosophy. Andrew Blake
(Friend) and Cung Vu (Friend) have
directed their support towards the Mary
Frances Cairncross Scholarship which the
Rector created in memory of her mother
to bring to Exeter a top graduate student
from a developing country. Two other
friends of the College, Bina Pandit and
Detta O’Cathain, have created scholarships
for graduates who did their undergraduate
degrees at Exeter so that we can keep hold
of these excellent students.
The College formally purchased the
Walton Street site on 17 March 2010
with confidence gained through early gifts
received from members of the Campaign
Committee, including Sir Ronald Cohen
(1964, PPE), Mark Houghton Berry (1976,
Literae Humaniores), John Leighfield
(1958, Literae Humaniores) and Charles
Outhwaite (1984, Modern History),
together with other Old Members, Parents
of a current student, Friends of Exeter and
from Valerie Barr, the widow of Rector
Emeritus Barr.
We are also grateful for the ongoing
support for the tutorial system which we
believe is the sine qua non of an Oxford
education and which we insist on protecting.
Over the last year gifts have been received
from David Hughes (1965, Medicine) who,
as he retired from the medical profession,
made a generous gift to support the teaching
of medicine at Exeter. Adam Hogg (1962,
Animal Physiology), Iain Lumsden (1964,
Mathematics) and others have also made
generous gifts which have been directed
towards the support of the tutorial and it
is this focused giving that ensures that the
tutorial will survive.
We have also been much encouraged by
the generosity of Old Members who have
supported very specific needs over the last
year. Stephen Green (1966, PPE) and his
wife Jay have committed to supporting the
post of Chaplain at Exeter College over the
coming years; Costas Prapopulos (1955,
Literae Humaniores) made a generous gift
to the Boat Club for training and equipment
which they used to fund a training camp
at Wallingford over Easter; and David
Hartnett (1971, English), John Quelch
(1969, Modern History) and John Hughes
(1950, PPP) have all been very generous
in their support for different aspects of the
College Library and provision for study,
research and archives.
Every gift makes a difference and, without
your support, we would not be able to
support our students nor offer the calibre
or depth of teaching that we do. Whether
you choose to give to the Annual Fund
or to direct your gift to a specific project
such as those described above we – the
Fellows and current students – know how
much the College benefits as a direct result
of your generosity. And we in turn rise to
the example you have set us. Fellows and
students alike have started supporting the
College financially, with 56% of the leaving
class this year making their first gift! Long
may this continue and long may Exeter
flourish. Thank you.
List of Donors
The following list recognises all those, including
Parents and Friends, who made a gift to Exeter
in Financial Year 2010 (i.e. 1 August 2009 – 31
included in the total amount given for that year.
Great effort has been made to ensure that this list
is accurate and we apologise in advance for any
mistakes or omissions. Please let us know of any
errors and we will be happy to print corrections in
Including Exeter College in your Will
Your Will is the best way to provide for your friends and family, to help the causes you
support, and to acknowledge the influences that have shaped your life.
Legacies have played, and continue to play, a major part in the history of Exeter
College. As state funding declines, we need constant help to preserve our way of
education, our unique environment and our distinct values.
As Exeter College is a charitable institution, bequests to it are free of
Inheritance Tax and really do make a difference to the lives of our members.
Including a legacy in your Will, or adding a Codicil, is a simple matter, although
we do strongly advise that you take professional legal advice.
If you do choose to remember the College in your Will, we would be grateful if
you could inform us so that we can ensure that all aspects of your plans are fully
understood, and so that we can thank you appropriately. This will not
represent a binding commitment, and your plans will be treated in the strictest
confidence.
For further information, please contact the Development Office.
