E X E T E R C O L L E G E D O N O R S ’ R E P O R T | 1 0 Disbursement Donations to the Annual Fund are unrestricted although donors are invited to express a preference as to how their gift is used. These preferences include tutorial support, student support (scholarships, hardships bursaries and travel grants), College facilities (including the Library and Chapel), student clubs and societies (including sport), and student career development. From this financial year, a proportion of Annual Fund income is being used to support the purchase and redevelopment of the Walton St site. The preferences expressed by donors are reflected in how the gifts are disbursed each year. What is especially encouraging is that the majority of donors to the Annual Fund (77% in 2009/10) chose to direct their gift to ‘wherever the need is greatest’ or did not express a preference at all. E X E T E R C O L L E G E D O N O R S ’ R E P O R T | 1 0 Making a Difference In last year’s Donors’ Report, we reported the creation, by Liz Wood, of a Bursary for students reading French, set up in memory of her husband, Chris Wood (1960, Modern Languages). Here, the first beneficiary of the Bursary reports on the difference it made to his studies. It was a great honour to be selected as this year’s beneficiary of the Chris Wood Bursary. As a third year student of French and Linguistics, currently on my Year Abroad, I appreciate the timely financial support which proved to be extremely helpful at the beginning of my Erasmus year in Paris, where student housing is infamously difficult. The unexpected long stay in a hostel, the transport fees for house viewings, the overpriced phone top-up cards all contributed to the inevitably excessive expenditures I was faced with before settling down. Without the Bursary I would have been in a much more difficult situation with financial worries. Moreover, the Bursary continues to offer great help with the purchase of academic books and materials, and I am certain that the financial support will motivate me more to realise the travel plans I have for this year. Therefore I am extremely grateful to Mrs Wood for her generosity in setting up this fund in memory of her late husband.
