A F E L L O W T A K E S A W H I M S I C A L L O O K A T T H E T U T O R I A L … Why I still love giving tutorials after 25 years at Exeter is that you have a chance to discuss a subject you really like with intelligent people: to try out ideas with them, to do things with their ideas, and to watch them growing in assurance, skill, and depth. Fortunately, they seem to enjoy it too; that’s partly because this form of learning is so active. It’s like cooking some difficult cake, if you’re not very experienced. You could read how to do it from a book, or you could watch someone else doing it; but what you’d prefer is having a go yourself, with an experienced cake-maker to comment and correct. We’re so grateful to the people who help us to keep helping students create and learn by giving to the Annual Fund, which supports the tutorial system at Exeter. The Annual Fund allows students to benefit from travel scholarships, library grants, sports funding and Exeter’s Careers Office. T H E C A R E E R S O F F I C E R I N T R O D U C E S T H E W O R K O F T H E C A R E E R S O F F I C E The Careers Office is unique amongst the Oxford Colleges, both in its level of activity and in the attention it pays to individual students. Thanks to the generosity of Old Members, at a time when many young people are struggling with a recession-hit job market, the Careers Office at Exeter provides vital resources and opportunities to equip students with the skills they need to thrive in their chosen career. That there should be such a successful and diverse programme at Exeter is testament to a body of Old Members who are accomplished, generous and engaged in College life. E X E T E R C O L L E G E D O N O R S ’ R E P O R T | 1 0 Leavers’ Gift This year, thanks to the encouragement of four of our leaving students, a large number of finalists chose to support Exeter by making a gift to the Annual Fund. Patrick Howard, Felix Leach, Ed Moores and Piers Taylor worked tirelessly in sending round e-mails, distributing flyers, and raising awareness of the role which the Annual Fund has played in enhancing student life over the last three years. 56% of our departing undergraduates, along with some graduates and Williams students, made a gift, with 40 students joining the 1314 Society by making a donation of £13.14 or more. The total raised was £673, £114 more than was raised last year. Special thanks go to the two Old Members who each year support this initiative by matching the total raised. This is a real incentive to the students to participate in the enterprise at the level which they can afford. It is very heartening to see such commitment to Exeter from our departing students, all the more so when the majority have not even secured a job yet. Their philanthropy is an inspiration to the whole Exonian community and will encourage Old Members who have not yet donated to Exeter to make their first gift. 1314 Society Three years since its launch, the 1314 Society is more popular than ever with Exeter’s Old Members. The jewel in the crown of Annual Fund Giving, it recognises donors who give a memorable sum to the causes supported by the Annual Fund. To join the 1314 Society, a donor gives a minimum of £1,314 (gross) in a financial year, with incentive rates for students and Old Members under 30. This year 168 members have enlisted, 41 more than last year, and a number of our leaving students chose to join by donating £13.14, the discounted rate for students. 1314 members will receive a letter from the Rector, a pin and a certificate in the financial year in which they have made their donation. They will also be invited to an exclusive annual event in College. “I chose to support Exeter by joining the 1314 Society because I believe it extremely important that Oxford, through its Colleges, should continue to thrive as a leading University in the UK.
