Two Works: A Home in the Wilderness and The Ingleside Winter,<br />

1870 and undated (Conningham, 2861, 3112). Identified in inscriptions<br />

in the matrix. Small folio lithographs with hand-coloring on paper, sight<br />

sizes 9 1/4 x 13 1/2, 19 1/4 x 13 1/4 in., respectively, in period bird’seye<br />

maple frames. Condition: Both with toning and minor foxing, not<br />

examined out of frames.<br />

the 8th of Janury 1815. Identified in the matrix. Engraving with handcoloring,<br />

first state, (without keys and with the figure of Gen. Lambert<br />

weeping into a handkerchief), sheet size 18 x 22 3/4 in., framed.<br />

Condition: Toning, minor foxing, creases below image.<br />

Silhouette Portrait of a Gentleman Standing in an Army<br />

Encampment. Signed and dated “Augn. Edouart fecit Saratoga, Aug<br />

23, 1844.” Cut black paper heightened with white chalk, applied to<br />

paper, with ink wash background, 12 x 8 1/2 in., in a period burl veneer<br />

frame. Condition: Toning, minor foxing, small abrasion c.r.<br />

Provenance: Purchased at Phillips Auction gallery, sale 5225, May 24,<br />

1979, lot 299, with auction catalog description and image affixed to the<br />

backboard.<br />

Philadelphia, with large <strong>American</strong> eagle and shield over views of the five<br />

exhibition buildings at the park, printed in brown on a white ground with<br />

dark red borders, sight size 24 1/4x 24 1/4 in.<br />

Three Works on Paper. An ink and watercolor schoolboy map<br />

inscribed “Map of the Great Lakes/Drawn By E. Littlefield” l.l., 9 3/4 x<br />

13 3/4 (sight), in a period molded wood frame; a graphite and crayon<br />

drawing of the Jefferson Civil War barracks at St. Louis, Missouri,<br />

inscribed “Jefferson Barracks/Mo./Oct 9th 1862” u.r., 9 1/4 x 11 3/4<br />

(sight), in a period molded wood frame; and an ink drawing of an<br />

unidentified Civil War barracks, 7 3/4 x 15 in. (sight), in a period molded<br />

giltwood frame. Condition: The map with toning, foxing, a few small<br />

tears and holes in the margins; the Jefferson Barracks with center<br />

crease, minor toning, small loss u.l. corner; the unidentified barracks<br />

with fold creases, several losses primarily on lower portion, toning,<br />

stains; all not examined out of frames.<br />

Margins 1 1/2 in. or more, toning, creases, stains, minor edge tears.<br />

chromolithograph with hand-coloring on paper, with yacht identification<br />

in inscriptions, sheet size 22 3/4 x 30 in., in a bird’s-eye maple frame.<br />

Condition: Laid down onto paperboard, repaired tears into image u.c.,<br />

repaired tears to margin l.r., several losses to margins, mat stain.<br />

Note: The backing paper retains a “The Old Print Shop” framer’s label.<br />

Framed Engraved City of Boston Fire Department Certificate of<br />

Service, engraving by J. Eddy after Robert Salmon (Massachusetts,<br />

1775-before 1851), c. 1833, identified in inscriptions, the engraving<br />

depicting the fire at the Old State House in Boston (which occurred<br />

November 21, 1832); the certificate of service, issued by the Boston<br />

Fire Department to firemen who have served seven years, was awarded<br />

to Levi L. Warrick, dated January 1, 1833, and signed by Charles Wells,<br />

4th Mayor of Boston, and Samuel F. McCleary, Boston’s first City Clerk,<br />

(toning, minor stains l.l.), 17 3/4 x 12 1/4 in., in original frame with<br />

inscribed period label to backing “D. Seawart/Gilder/Boston/1833.”<br />

blue reserve inscribed “No 1/Shackford/1826” flanked by crossed laurel<br />

leaves, on a black ground, with yellow-painted collar, (wear, handle<br />

cracked and detached on one side), ht. to top of collar 15 1/2 in.<br />

Federal Fire Society Paint-decorated Leather Fire Bucket,<br />

Portsmouth, New Hampshire, c. 1793, the front of the fire bucket<br />

painted with “No./1.” over a reserve with angelic figure above the<br />

inscriptions “Jofeph Haven/1793,” “Federal F.S.,” and flickering flames,<br />

the back painted with red, yellow, and black stripes, (handle probably<br />

replaced, paint wear), ht. to top of collar 12 1/2 in.<br />

Literature: See Federal Fire Society of Portsmouth New Hampshire,<br />

published by the same in 1905. Joseph Haven is listed as one of the<br />

founding members of the Federal Fire Society, which was first organized<br />

March 6, 1789. In the “Biographical Notes” section on p. 20, Joseph<br />

Haven is listed as a merchant and lived “on Pleasant Street in the threestoried<br />

house, corner of Richmond Street, which he built in 1790. He<br />

died July 14, 1829, aged seventy-two years.”<br />
