New York, late 19th/early 20th century, slant-front case with carrying<br />
handle and rectangular bevel-edge glazed viewing window, houses a<br />
wet compass in gimbals with cardinal points in block lettering, fleur-delis<br />
at North and maker’s inscription “Ritchie, Boston, USA,” with sidemounted<br />
copper oil lamp, ht. 19 1/2 in.<br />

handhold in the form of a cow’s head joined by the ebony collar with<br />

century, the barometer and thermometer on a lithograph printed paper<br />
dial with Admiral Robert Fitzroy’s “Remarks,” (toning, losses, stains to<br />
lithograph), 37 x 7 3/4 in.<br />
Note: Admiral Robert Fitzroy was a career naval officer, who upon his<br />
retirement from service in 1850 turned his attention to meteorology.<br />
Though he did not design the barometers bearing his name, he is most<br />
remembered for consolidating weather information and presenting his<br />
“Remarks” which are printed on the barometers carrying his name,<br />
which simply explains the meaning of rising or falling mercury.<br />

THE BAY VIEW. Signed “J.O.J.F.” l.l., titled and rowing figures<br />
identified “J.O.J. Frost/Stroke, Charles Coates, Joe Coffin, John Coffin”<br />
in inscriptions below. Oil on board, 8 1/4 x 34 in., in a period molded<br />
wood frame. Condition: Very good.<br />
Provenance: The painting is reported to have been sold in the 1920s<br />
by J.O.J. Frost to a Marblehead, Massachusetts, couple, and was<br />
displayed at their summer home in Martha’s Vineyard.<br />
