From 1930 onward, X-ray equipment <strong>in</strong> E<strong>in</strong>dhoven was manufactured<br />
<strong>in</strong> the Equipment Factory, compris<strong>in</strong>g several build<strong>in</strong>gs that<br />
housed various Philips manufactur<strong>in</strong>g departments, <strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g a division<br />
for receivers, a chemical group, and the X-ray group. 63 Bouwers<br />
and an eng<strong>in</strong>eer named Roeter<strong>in</strong>k led the X-ray group. Because of<br />
technical problems encountered dur<strong>in</strong>g manufactur<strong>in</strong>g and <strong>in</strong> usage,<br />
Philips decided <strong>in</strong> 1937 to re<strong>in</strong>troduce the Pilot Plant. Roeter<strong>in</strong>k,<br />
who was <strong>in</strong> charge of pilot manufactur<strong>in</strong>g, ambitiously announced<br />
that his department would ensure that no product would be mass<br />
produced until the company was 100 percent certa<strong>in</strong> that it was<br />
ready. 64<br />
Overseas Markets for Philips X-Ray Technology<br />
Philips’s <strong>in</strong>volvement <strong>in</strong> the X-ray market was not limited to Europe;<br />
policy for the United States was frequently debated with<strong>in</strong> the company.<br />
In 1928 Bouwers visited the United States, where he made<br />
quite an impression. 65 At the Congress of the Radiological Society<br />
of North America, held <strong>in</strong> Chicago, he and the radiologist Arthur<br />
Compton of the <strong>University</strong> of Chicago were awarded medals for their<br />
contributions to radiology research. 66 While <strong>in</strong> the United States<br />
Bouwers visited the laboratories of Western Electric, West<strong>in</strong>ghouse<br />
Electric, the Bureau of Standards <strong>in</strong> Wash<strong>in</strong>gton, GE, Chicago <strong>University</strong>,<br />
and various hospitals. From his report of the trip, it is evident<br />
that there was great <strong>in</strong>terest <strong>in</strong> the Philips Metalix tube, and<br />
five years later, <strong>in</strong> 1933, the “Philips Metalix Corporation, New<br />
York,” was established. From then on, Philips also produced X-ray<br />
tubes <strong>in</strong> America. Sales, however, were disappo<strong>in</strong>t<strong>in</strong>g. In America<br />
Philips faced sharp competition, notably from GE, which used<br />
Coolidge’s and other important patents aggressively <strong>in</strong> a defensive<br />
strategy. 67 Philips’s <strong>in</strong>itiative to enter GE’s market with X-ray technology<br />
<strong>in</strong>dicates that GE had good reason to keep an eye on Philips,<br />
which had expanded its facilities <strong>in</strong> electric lamps, X-ray technology,<br />
and radio dur<strong>in</strong>g the 1920s and, together with Siemens, became<br />
one of GE’s biggest overseas competitors.<br />
