be rather obst<strong>in</strong>ate <strong>in</strong> claim<strong>in</strong>g his <strong>in</strong>tellectual freedom. 70 He was<br />

conv<strong>in</strong>ced, for example, that us<strong>in</strong>g oil as an <strong>in</strong>sulation medium for<br />

X-ray tubes was useless. In a meet<strong>in</strong>g of July 4, 1938, it emerged that<br />

this had given rise to <strong>in</strong>ternal conflict at Philips:<br />

the pr<strong>in</strong>ciple that has cont<strong>in</strong>ually predom<strong>in</strong>ated, i.e. of not us<strong>in</strong>g<br />

oil, has led to one-sided development which, because of the requirements<br />

laid down by the factory, does not seem to be entirely<br />
