Leaflets Banned
In order to implement the “Green
university” strategy, the technical
department at UiO has reiterated
the ban on leaflets, especially
those from commercial companies.
However, leaflet spreaders are
completely unaware of this ban
since the technical department
does not take measures to enforce
this decision with consequences.
UiO Fight back Private Piracy
M.Haugen, a student at UiO, was
accused of piracy, even though he
used his own private network via
provider Get. According to UiO
IT-director B. Ness, UiO has no
access to internet traffic in private
networks. He adds that the student
was blamed for (unknowingly)
making copyrighted material
from UiO website available for
unauthorized users. Because of the
many complaints from anti-piracy
associations, UiO is thinking
of waiving their exclusive right
to provide internet for student
villages, and opening it up to
private companies.
Kringsjå Electricity: 10 K
Students Swindled
Following up a Universitas article
from last year, SiO was forced
to double check the source of
unrealistic electricity bills from
Kringsjå. The investigation
revealed that the reason was a
malfunctioning electric meter
installed by Hafslund, the
Norwegian power company. For
seven years, the meter registered
twice as much energy, and the
preliminary calculations show
that around 10 000 students
were swindled for the sum of 15-
20 million. SiO and Hafslund are
Students at BI (Norwegian
International
Boom
Student
The number of international
students in Norway
has increased by 74%
in the last 7 years. S.
Thowsen from the Center
of Internationalization
thinks that the increase is
connected to the absence of
student fees, but also a good
reputation and promotion
of exchange programs and
courses held in English.
The number of Norwegian
students going abroad
slightly exceeds the number
of hosted students, and
Delayed Grades
6 \\ Thus Spoke Universitas
The Norwegian School of
Management (BI) has reportedly
been delaying 17% of grades.
One of the students had to wait
a semester for his grade. This
is especially troubling, since it
hinders the students ´ opportunity
to learn from feedback and prepare
for future exams.
Observatory – a Place for
Science
Founded in 1834, the University’s
observatory is its oldest building.
When the vicinity of the city
became too illuminated to conduct
astronomical studies, UiO moved
them into a new building, and
used the old one for different
purposes. Now DnB NOR gave the
discussing the possible solutions
for the issue, while students wait
for a refund.
Economically Vulnerable: 1/3
of SiO Students
A recent Gallup study showed that
Norwegian students (especially
females) are 3 times more likely
to have economic problems than
in other stratas of society. 48%
said that they would not be able to
pay an unexpected 5000 NOK bill.
