According to recent study,
Oslo students top the list
when it comes to drug abuse.
One out of ten students in SiO
uses drugs on a regular basis.
This is twice as much as in
Trondheim. Hash is the most
popular ticket to heaven, while
cocaine and amphetamine are
second-best choices.
Failed
their political views. After
yet another democracychallenged
election of
Lukasjenko, the numbers
have decreased, but, as the
spokesman from ESU adds,
this only shows that Belarus
is hiding the real reasons
behind expulsions. Both the
UN and a selection of Nordic
Ministries of Education
(including the Norwegian
representative) have taken a
stand against the climate of
fear in academia of Belarus.
International Students
will be Prioritized Says
Welfare Council
The executive board of
the Student Welfare
Council (VT) decided to
prioritize the 100% housing
guarantee for international
students. Addressing the
lack of housing for national
students, the board proposed
introducing measures for
Norwegians that would be
in favor of younger students
with good study progress.
The measures are: an upper
age limit of 30-35 years,
extension of a max tenancy
period from 5 to 6 years
(and an extreme tenancy period of
7 to 8) and a demand to document
at least 50% study progress when
applying for a prolonged tenancy
contract.
Less Freedom with E-pensum
The Norwegian Association of
Institutions for Higher Education
(UHR) is planning to introduce
a digital “pensum” (obligatory
reading books) for all students. The
leader of the Norwegian Student
Association (NSO) is afraid that
this will give students no cheaper
options to get the books. Kopinor,
the company dealing with
copyrights, says that the bill can be
given to institutions, not students.
Academic “Salaries” to the
Voluntary
Following the recent Norwegian
trend, students engaged in
voluntary student societies at
UiO want to be able to claim
“renumeration” in the form of
credit points. The existing course,
Student Leadership for Union
Representatives (10 ECTS) has
too little grounding in the reality
of student societies, claims K.
Kirchhoff, president in DNS
(Norwegian Student Society).
Norway has invested as much
as 5.1 billion NOK in EU programs
for research and technological
development, but only 2.7
billion returned back as funding
for research where Norwegian
scientists take part. Applicants
from university colleges are
those most thwarted – only 12
researchers from these institutions
got EU funding, compared to 230
from universities.
Plato Podcasted
The only course that is obligatory
for all UiO students, Exphil
(Examen Philosoficum), is now
podcasted from the official
university website. The project
is meant to improve the quality
of education at UiO. While the
scientists are worried that the
measure will decrease the number
of students and make students less
involved in class, the proponents
point out that podcasts will
function as a learning tool
alongside the actual seminars, and
that the possibility to listen to the
lecture again will make students
less dependent on taking notes.
The IT center promises to install
sound recording devices in lecture
halls for other courses as well.
