2012-2013 PreAP Chemistry: Syllabus and Procedures
Teacher: Alissa Clark
Purpose: This course will prepare you to take AP Chemistry next year. You need to take AP Chemistry if you
plan to be in the medical, veterinary, engineering, or science field as a career. This course requires strong
reading comprehension skills and mathematics problem solving skills. We will study the methods of science,
atomic structure, electronic structure, chemical reactions, and gas behavior. ACT preparation will also be a
major part of this course.
Required Materials
• Textbook
• Pencil and/or Pen
• Calculator (scientific or graphing)
• Three-ring binder (1 inch or larger)
• Loose leaf paper
Evaluation Plan
You will receive a list of learning targets with each unit in this course. Each of these learning targets is
assigned a maximum value of three points. You can earn 1, 2, or 3 points for each target based on your level of
understanding of the target.
Make-up Work
If you are absent on a day that a grade is taken, you have the number of days missed plus one to make up an
assessment. If your absence is unexcused, I must enter a zero in the gradebook for that day’s assignment.
Tutoring
You may need additional help to understand the material you are to learn. I prefer to tutor in the mornings
beginning at 8 am. Please sign up for tutoring on either the morning or afternoon calendar posted on the
bulletin board. If a time is crossed out, I am unavailable during that time. If you do not sign up in advance,
there is no guarantee I will be available when you want to stay.
Please note that tutoring is additional help. You must pay attention and participate when material is taught the
first time.
Mastery Learning
Your grade in this course will be determined by your understanding of chemistry content. Quizzes will be
given periodically. If you are not scoring well on the quizzes, you need to come in for additional tutoring
before the test. You will not pass this course without demonstrating understanding of the chemistry content on
the tests.
ACT
All juniors will take the ACT in March. Since this is a junior level science course, we will have ACT
preparation in this course throughout the year. A score of 24 is considered “college ready” on the Science
Reasoning portion of the ACT.
Class Procedures

1. Arrive on time and in uniform with all materials. If you are late without a written excuse, you will be
counted tardy.
2. Do not bring food or drink into the classroom since it is a laboratory.
3. You should behave in school as you would in a place of employment. Use only the type of language that
would be expected of you at work in a job in which you work with the public. Use your time appropriately.
Chemistry class is not social time.
4. Follow the instructions on the board immediately upon entering the classroom.
5. Observe all safety procedures and instructions in the laboratory. Failure to do so may result in the loss of
your laboratory privileges.
6. You are responsible for any equipment you damage or break during lab. Please see the posted list for prices.
9. On days when a substitute is present, you must turn in your assignment to the substitute or you will receive a
zero for the assignment. In addition, if the substitute indicates you were disruptive, you will receive a zero for
the assignment.
10. Take care of your personal business during passing time. Do not ask to leave class.
Midterm Exam
There will be a midterm exam before Winter Break. This exam will be comprehensive. This means it will
cover all material learned since August. This exam will count 20% of your course grade up to that point.
Final Exam
There will be a final exam at the end of the school year. This exam will be comprehensive. This means it will
cover all material learned since August. This exam will count 20% of your course grade.
One Credit System
The new State Accountability program incorporates a comprehensive end-of-course exam that counts 20% of
students’ final course grades. Therefore, Bardstown High School will be awarding one credit for each course
that will be recorded at the end of the school year. There will be no half credits awarded in December and in
June. Students’ course work at the end of the school year will count 80% of the course grade. One credit will be
earned for each year-long course.
