MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENTSr. Jacquelyn Gusdane, SNDSecurity and insecurity. . . Why dothese words keep surfacing? We seeksecurity but are faced with trials thatbring about insecurity. Often “notknowing” is at the core of our anxiety. For families in today’s world thereare many challenges to overcome inorder find that elusive sense of peace:When do I have time for a dentistappointment? How well is our 401Kdoing? How can I balance family, workand my aging parent? How do we protectour children from images that contradictthe values we instill at home?Although we can site many obstaclesthreatening our security, perhaps weshould turn our focus to Jesus, thesource of our peace. For Jesus, securitywasn’t one of his core concerns. Hemingled with all kinds of people. Heentered towns and villages where hiswelcome was anything but warm. Hespoke with freedom and authority andnot fear or coercion. He instructed hisdisciples to follow the lead of the Spirit— to leave all.I like to imagine that Mary taughtJesus all these lessons early on. Mary, aswe would say, “got it.” She mastered theart of weighing, holding, and embracingthe dynamic tensions that arise daily.Running away and avoidance were notpart of Mary’s way of living. In essence, both Jesus and Mary found peace within,an at home-ness that was unshaken byexternal insecurities and cemented byGod’s unconditional love for them. There is an at home-ness at NDCLas well. In some ways, it may mirrorthat inner world of peace in thesecurities it provides:• a community rooted in a relationshipwith the person of Jesus;• a place where young people areimmersed in caring and respectfor one another;• an experience where students engagewith teachers bent on forming mindsand shaping hearts;• an opportunity to expand limitedvisions into a global vision of livingin solidarity with the people of ourworld. And so I propose to you, in ourworld of challenge and insecurity, thattogether, we embrace the abidingstrength and hope in our security, themission and core values that driveNotre Dame-Cathedral Latin School. With gratitude and prayer for you andyour loved ones!Your TURNDear Leo,I thought the Hall Of Fame VIP event wasa home run. Thanks for helping us tocelebrate the 50th year of the CathedralLatin Athletic Hall of Fame. There weremany great comments from those whoattended about feeling better connectedto NDCL as a result of this event. Theywill help us carry the message that the“Latin spirit” is alive and well at NDCL.Terry Mulligan, HOF ’63HOF Reception Co-chairs TerryMulligan ’63 & Pete Pucher ’55Hi Sister Jacquelyn,Thank you very much for all the outstandingwork you did to provide one ofthe most memorable weekends of our lives!Paula and I really appreciate the enormousefforts put forth by all to celebrate the50th Hall of Fame weekend, and therainy Benedictine game gave me chillsand flashbacks to our games at HeightsHigh School in the 1970s! I always wantedLatin to beat Benedictine, and thankfullywe did! GO LIONS!!!The Spirit of the weekend was capturedby those students and families huddledaround The Blessed Mother Statue duringthe game. Majestically positioned abovethe field, it is an incrediblereminder of our rich Catholic heritage, the sacrifices of those who went before us,and our increasingly strong spiritualcommitment to one another.May God continue to richly bless you, your families and NDCL!Sincerely,Michael J. NDCL’s Top DocsThey are some of the best of the best students to walkthe halls of Cathedral Latin School, Notre DameAcademy and NDCL. Now they are some of the best ofthe best doctors to walk the halls of our hospitals - someat the peak of prestige, and others well on their way.“I think I have the best job in theworld,” says Barbara (Kranjc)Warner, M.D., an accomplishedneonatologist in the neonatalintensive care unit at WashingtonUniversity School of Medicine/St.Louis Children’s Hospital.“There’s nothing more rewardingthan taking a sick baby and helpingto bring that baby to a good stateof health,” says Dr. Warner (NDA ’75).“Paradoxically, if you have aninfant with a lethal condition, it isjust as rewarding to help a familythrough that process,” she continues.“It is heartbreaking, but rewardingto be able to help them throughthat emotional trauma and helpmake it as positive an experienceas you can.”Notre Dame-Cathedral Latin Seasons Fall 2009 3

Dr. Warner, who is associate professorof pediatrics at the medical school, teaches residents, medical studentsand fellows. She also performs clinicalresearch, working on a number of studiesrelated to ways to improve the outcomesof preterm babies. Her area of interestis necrotizing enterocolitis, which has a30 percent mortality rate in preterminfants.“We are trying to help identify thecause and hopefully, ways to preventit,” Dr. Warner says.Dr. Warner, who spent the first partof her career at Children’s HospitalMedical Center/University ofCincinnati Hospital and College ofMedicine, has been appointed tomany positions and committees, haspublished and participated in numerouspublications, and has receivedrecognition as a “BestDoctor” by CincinnatiMagazine and by thosein the field for her work.Dr. Warner also hasplayed key roles in atremendous amountof grant-supportedresearch. She is theprincipal investigatorfor a three-year,$450,000 neonatalresearchproject inSt. Louis and is coinvestigatorfor a nearly$1 million NationalInstitute of Healthresearch project, “TheNeonatal Microbiomeand NecrotizingEnterocolitis.”That’s something forsomeone who hadn’t really consideredmedical school – until she was workingon her thesis in graduate school.“I was interested in public health,”she explains, but government spendingcuts in the 1980s wiped out the departmentwhere she was working andchanged her future.“At the urging of friends, I appliedfor medical school - and that was it,”Dr. Warner says. She met her husband of 24 years,Brad Warner, during her residency aftercompleting her medical degree at theUniversity of Cincinnati. Today, he ishead of pediatric surgery at the samehospital as his wife. They have twodaughters, Lauren, 18, and Emily, 15.“Generally, Ibelieve thatthe ethicalatmosphere youare in whenyou are youngerreally serves as afoundation for thephilosophy youbelieve as youget older.”Harold Butler, M.D. CL ’67Dr. Warner believes her experienceat Notre Dame Academy, which sheshared with her sister Maria KranjcGillespie (NDA ’73), brought out herleadership qualities and independence.“The big standout classes for mewere biology and advanced biology,” sheremembers. “They instilled in me a loveof science and a love of the natural world.Sister Kendra was the person who taughtboth those classes, and what she broughtwas not just being a good teacher, but alove and an appreciation of the worldaround us.“Notre Dame provided a very openlearning environment, and not just forthe rigors of academia,” she continues.“I think it really provided a significantspiritual and retrospective look at yourlife as a young woman going into theworld.”Radiologist Harold Butler, M.D. (CL’67), recounted a similar experience athis alma mater. “Generally, I believethat the ethical atmosphere you are inwhen you are younger really serves asa foundation for the philosophy youbelieve as you get older,” says Dr.Butler, who works at the Louis StokesCleveland VA Medical Center. “Latin’semphasis on things other than thematerial world helped to show thatpeople are more valuable than things.”Dr. Butler, whose work is mostly ingastrointestinal radiology and interpretingdiagnostic tests such as X-rays,ultrasounds and CT scans, began workingin the medical field almost as soon ashe finished high school. He worked as apharmacist’s assistant for a summer, then as an orderly, then as an inhalationtherapy technician for two or three years.“It was interesting to me, and itseemed important, even when I wasjust working in the pharmacy doingthings like making mouthwash,”remembers Dr. Butler, who was pre-medat the time. “They were things that weren’tcritical but were useful to the patient.“Being an orderly and working inrespiratory therapy made the patientsin a sense more real. You could relate tothem, and you got to know them. Youwanted them to feel better. Being partof aiding in their recovery made itworthwhile.”Dr. Butler, 60, earned a bachelor’sdegree in chemistry from John CarrollUniversity and a medical degree fromCase Western Reserve University’smedical school.“One of the things that makes itimportant for me to go to work everyday is the idea that I am doing a service;that what I do is important to thepatients that I deal with,” he says.“When I’m reading their studies, I’mone of the most important people intheir lives. If I miss something, therecould be trouble down the line. Itmakes my life different than going toa business job every day.”Dr. Butler and his wife of 19 years,Sheila, live in Shaker Heights. Their sonPaul, 16, is a junior at NDCL, and theirolder son Vincent is a graphic designerin California.Dr. Butler graduated shortly afterJoseph A. DiBlasio, M.D., CL ’65, a generalsurgeon at UHHS Geauga RegionalHospital, where he has worked for 21 years.4 Seasons Fall 2009 Notre Dame-Cathedral Latin

Dr. DiBlasio is chief of the division ofgeneral surgery at the hospital and waschief of surgery for six years. He also doessome work with Lake Health, formerlyknown as Lake Hospital System.Previously, he was the attending surgeonon the trauma service at St. VincentCharity Hospital from 1988 to 1992.Dr. DiBlasio performs abdominal andbreast surgery, endoscopy and thyroidsurgery, among other procedures.“The thing I like the most about mycareer is that I can usually help someoneto regain health or feel better,”Dr. DiBlasio says. “The other thing I likeis that at least up until now medicinehas been very much based on therelationship between the physicianand the patient. It’s not between meand my boss, about me doing my jobfor my superior; it’s about me doing thebest job I can do for my patient. Thatindependence and the strength ofthat relationship is a source of atremendous satisfaction.“I feel that what I do is a bit of acalling,” he reflects. “I’m here to servemy patients and to really try to listen tothem and hear what they need and seeif I can help.”“We deal with human beings,”he continues. “There is a wholedepth, a whole history to everysingle person I interact with.”DiBlasio sensed the callingtoward the end of high school.“I really wanted to do somethingthat was people-oriented butalso scientific. For me, medicinewas really a blend of that and Ifeel it suits me very well, scienceapplied to a very human field,”he explains. He earned a biologydegree from NortheasternUniversity in Boston and amedical degree from theUniversity of Rome in Italy.“I still had family there, andI had a desire to expand myhorizons,” he says.Dr. DiBlasio, 61, was born inItaly and moved with his familyto Little Italy in Cleveland at age6 to join his father’s side of thefamily. Neither he nor his threeolder sisters spoke English, which he learned from the nunsat Holy Rosary Grade School. Hemust have caught on quickly —skipping a grade at the school, and thus graduating a year earlyfrom Cathedral Latin.“I always look back at my years atLatin with fond memories,” says Dr.DiBlasio. The faculty taught us soundvalues and about hard work, beingupright and serving the community. They taught us to have honesty andintegrity.”“I think the development of character- more than anything at Latin - was ourreal education.”Dr. DiBlasio and his wife Susanreside in Russell Township and havethree daughters: Carla (NDCL ’05), Lisaand Christina.“The responsibilities and expectationswere phenomenal in preparing me for mycollege career, and I also had fun, whichis so important in high school.”“It is a vocation. It is a calling.”Joseph A. DiBlasio, M.D. CL ’65Katie E. Pestak, D.O. NDCL ’98Katie E. Pestak, D.O., of Westlake, is asecond-year pediatric resident at TheCleveland Clinic. Growing up, Pestak(NDCL ’98) had a love of children.“When I was 10 or 11, I thought,‘I could be a teacher; I could be a daycare provider,’ but I liked science aswell, so I thought I should look intobeing a nurse or a doctor,” she recalls.“I remember sitting on the couch withmy mom and dad, watching ‘Rescue911’ and thinking, ‘This is cool.’ I likedthe idea of being able to take care ofsick kids in the hospital, of knowing Ican make a difference.”For Dr. Pestak, workdays meanclocking in at 6 a.m. and clockingout 12 hours later – if she’s lucky.“It takes billions of hours andlots and lots of lack of sleep, butwhen the day is over and a beautifullittle boy with a toothy smile hugsyou goodbye, when days beforehe was too ill to leave his hospitalbed – you know that this is whatyou are meant to do,” she says.Dr. Pestak, 29, is a first-generationphysician in her family, but partof a third generation of the NDCLtradition. Her grandmotherElizabeth Ewing is a 1935 graduateof Notre Dame Academy; hermother Susan Stenger Pestak is a1972 graduate of NDA; her sisterBrittany is a 2006 graduate ofNDCL; and her brother Caseyis a senior. After high school, Dr. Pestakearned a bachelor’s degree inbiology from the 1,400-acreMount St. Mary’s University, asmall Catholic college inEmmitsburg, Md. “I knew comingfrom NDCL I wanted a smallercollege,” she says. “I loved it.”Notre Dame-Cathedral Latin Seasons Fall 2009 5

She earned a degree in chemistryfrom John Carroll University and hermedical degree from Wright StateUniversity in Dayton. She performedher training at MetroHealth MedicalCenter (MHMC); initially in internalmedicine, in which she is certified, andthen extended her training with aPulmonary and Critical CareFellowship.Dr. Poponick accepted a position inthe Department of EmergencyMedicine at MHMC in 1993, when theemergency medicine training programbegan. There, she provided direct careto patients and taught residents. Forthe last 10 years, she has worked inthe less acute side of the department, providing patient care as well asdepartment management.Dr. Poponick says she is often askedwhy she went through so much specializedtraining and then decided to workin the emergency department. Duringher internal medicine training, sheexplains, she gravitated toward twoareas: intensive care and the emergencydepartment, which she rotated throughduring her residency.“What I always liked about the areawas the variety of patients you wouldsee during a shift: sick, not so sick, young, old, and, at Metro, working peoplewith insurance as well as those whohad no insurance who needed tosee a doctor for whatever reason,” Dr.Poponick says. “They are all treated thesame, and they all have emergencies.“You find out when doing this thateveryone’s emergency can be different– a cut on your finger, a broken ankle, sprains, to heart attacks and strokes,”she continues. “Even the flu or coldsymptoms can be an emergency tothose who have no doctor or cannot get“You are in a position to helpothers, and it is a privilege to dothat.”Janet M. Poponick, M.D. NDA ’77.into see a doctor. So basically, this pathblends a lot of the different areas ofmedicine that I enjoyed doing, with theadded bonus of shift work.“The nice thing about emergencymedicine is that we also have chosenthe lifestyle of not being on call or havingpatients call you,” she adds. “We workreally hard while we are there, and tryto enjoy life when we are off.”Her path was not exactly what shethought it would be – which leads toher advice to those pursuing medicalcareers. “I would tell those thinkingabout this field or who are alreadysomewhere in college or the trainingprocess that they should keep theiroptions open,” Dr. Poponick says.“What you think is your chosen pathmay be far different-looking whenyou are done.”Dr. Butler stressed strong studyhabits, which he said he learned duringhis years at Cathedral Latin. “If somebodydecides to go into medicine, youhave to have a commitment to whatyou’re doing,” Dr. Butler says. “Youhave to be able to delay gratification. On a daily basis, you’ve got to decidenot to watch television, but to study;not to go out and party on Saturdaynight, but to work on your project. Youhave to substitute what you need to dofor what you want to do. That decisionneeds to be made over and over again. For almost all of us, that’s reallya struggle.”Dr. DiBlasio would strongly encouragestudents interested in medicine to pursuethe field and not allow their talents togo to waste.“However, I would also remind themthat they have to have a passion for it,”he says. “It’s not just a job that’s dictatedby putting in so many hours, or aboutmaking a living. It is a vocation. It is acalling. It demands a certain type ofself-sacrifice to do it the way it shouldbe done,” he describes.“You have to be interested in wantingto help people but also be able to putup with some of the frustrations thatcome with working with people in avery intimate way. You have to take careof their health, but it’s also importantto honor the profession. We have aresponsibility to our patients, we have aresponsibility to ourselves, and we havea responsibility to our profession. Wehave to treat it as more than a job,”Dr. DiBlasio says. “You are in a positionto help others, and it is a privilege todo that.”Dr. Pestak’s advice to NDCL studentsconsidering a medical career is to takeadvantage of the science and mathcourses offered at the high schoolbecause much of the information willbe repeated in college. “Also, don’t giveup if your dream is to be a doctor, anurse an engineer - work hard and takeadvantage of your teachers and yourprofessors,” she says. “Try to make itwork, because it can be done.“Be involved,” Dr. Pestak adds.“Volunteer if you can. Go to the hospitals, read to the kids. It will get your foot inthe door and help you figure out whatyou truly want.”Dr. Warner echoed that advice.“Find what you love to do, becauseit is a lot of work,” she says. “But if youlove it, it does not feel like work. If youcan find what you love to do, you’ll beone of the luckiest people in the world.”But perhaps the most importantadvice to those dreaming of careers inthe medical field is to stay human.“I always say, ‘The day I start to notfeel anything is the day I quit medicine,’”Dr. Warner says. “That’s true of all of usin the medical field.”All the physicians expressed gratitudefor their Catholic education at CathedralLatin, Notre Dame Academy and NDCLand encourage students to embrace themission, vision and core values atNDCL – and ultimately to strive tomake a difference in the world.Notre Dame-Cathedral Latin Seasons Fall 2009 7

New EndowedScholarship MemorializesJim Ramsey ’52As a student at Cathedral Latin School,Jim Ramsey seemed to be everywhere. One classmate referred to Jim as “JoeLatin” because he personified the verybest in the school. His list of accomplishmentswas filled with activities thatincluded football and basketball,Sodality, National Honor Society andeven the Dance Committee. He alsoserved as president of the Class of 1952.Through the decades that followed, Jimremained engaged with Cathedral Latin and NDCL until hisuntimely death in November of 2008. Jim died following a courageousbattle with brain cancer. Known and respected for his intellectand hard work, Jim had a very successful career with IBMand retired from there. He was widowed and re-married, a fatherand grandfather, and had a special passion for golf, including agolf hole in his back yard in Leander, TX. Though a long-timeTexas resident, Jim remained a loyal “Lion” all his life. Regularlyattending his class reunions, participatingin Latin alumni activities, and watchingfootball games at NDCL’s LionStadium – all brought great joy to Jim.He even volunteered to serve on theCampaign Cabinet for NDCL’s $4.5 millioncapital campaign. Jim also stayed connectedwith many of his classmates “online” until his health began to fail. Some of those classmates were somoved at Jim’s passing that they initiatedan endowed scholarship in his memoryat NDCL. Classmates Leo Dardy, ArtBostwick and Ron Bogolin put togetheran effort that has so far generated over$18,000 and successfully established theJim Ramsey ’52 Memorial Endowed Scholarship at NDCL. Manyclassmates recall fondly recall Jim’s warm smile, optimisticdemeanor and big heart. If you are interested in making a contribution to the Jim Ramsey’52 Memorial Endowed Scholarship, please contact Leo P. As a leader andmember of numerous professional organizations forcollege admissions counseling, Mrs. Pugh Blevins hasestablished professionalrelationshipswith admissions officersat colleges anduniversities throughoutthe United States.A past president ofRachel Siegel, Guidance Office Director the Ohio Associationfor CollegeAdmissionsCounseling (OACAC), she is a recognized expert on thecollege selection and application process. In fact, shetrains new college admissions counselors forthe OACAC.In Mr. Kasunic’s more than 20 years as a school counselor,he has developed a professional repertoire of skills toprovide individualized counseling support to our students.Fourteen years of combined experience as a schoolcounselor and school psychologist have enabled Mrs.Sanborn to develop keen insight into all aspects of anadolescent’s growth and development with specificexpertise in mental health and wellness services. All four counselors are strong advocates for each student’sacademic, personal, and career development. Toachieve these goals, they always welcome and encouragecommunication with parents by phone, email, orface-to-face appointments.18 Seasons Fall 2009 Notre Dame-Cathedral Latin
