M e s s a g e F r o m T h e P r e s i d e n tSr. Jacquelyn Gusdane, SNDour alumni andstudents have freelychosen to discoverand develop theirgifts of mind andheart in leadershipand service toothers. Thismovement is core tothe NDCL experience!Without a doubt, fall is exquisite in its breathtakingbeauty on the NDCL campus. Visitors and parentsoften find it difficult to capture in words but they knowin their hearts that they have touched the artistryof our God. A senior boy said to me, “Sister, you justcan’t describe the experience!” This comment onlyconfirms for me that our students do not miss much– we may think they do – but they don’t. They notice, question, suggest, challenge and take action becausethey are a part of an exciting community with endlessopportunities. In our 760 young men and women, ourmission is alive and visible. This community is rooted in the alumni from NotreDame Academy and Cathedral Latin School whotreasured Catholic education and cherished theChristian values instilled in them. Their passion forbuilding a community of faith and learning is ourblessing today. This lasting legacy comes to life in theunsolicited comments I heard a few days ago, “I loveNDCL!” “I wouldn’t want to be anywhere else.”My deepest hope for our students is that for each theNDCL experience will be a lifetime experience whereby,as transforming leaders in our world, they can live thetruth in love as Jesus did. This past June we celebratedNDCL’s 20th Commencement. We now count 3600men and women as NDCL alumni. In March, 1988when NDA and CL became NDCL, who would haveimagined such growth? We are at a new turning point, in July NDCL’s second fiveyear strategic plan, Transforming Lives ~ Changing theWorld, 2010 -2015, was approved by our Board. Thefocus is clear and the direction is known as we worktoward our vision. Let yourself enter into the NDCLexperience as you read about the involvement andoutreach of our students, alumni, faculty, and Board. Each in his or her own way has discovered ways todevelop and share their gifts of mind and heart inleadership and service to others. The young men and women of NDCL notice usand seek the witness of our deep faith in God,our goodness, and generosity. I trust that allof us want Notre Dame-Cathedral Latin Schoolto move forward into the future with hope andconfidence. We, as a Catholic school community, depend on you to support and sustain us. Whatgreater gift can you give?Know you are always welcome at NDCL. Onceyou experience NDCL, you too will echo thewords of one of our students who, in simplicityand sincerity, said to me a month ago, “I am sograteful to be a Lion!”Sr. Jacquelyn visits classrooms in Japan this summer withthe Japan-U.S. Teacher Exchange Program for Educationfor Sustainable Development (ESD). Administered byFulbright Japan, its purpose was to raise awareness ofESD-oriented school programs, enhance ESD-relatedcurricula in both countries and deepen a sense of globalinterconnectedness and cooperation between teachers inJapan and the United States.TransformingLives ~Changingthe WorldNDCL’s NewStrategic PlanSets Five-YearCourseFor three months, 14 members of the NDCL community wereentrusted with designing and developing a new strategic plan.Representation from all NDCL constituencies—administration, families, alumni and community—ensured a balancedapproach to planning for the school’s future. The strategicplanning committee chose Transforming Lives ~ Changing theWorld as the plan theme.“NDCL is all about educating young students and preparingour Catholic leaders for tomorrow,” says Bruce Jarosz, chairperson of NDCL’s Board of Directors, strategic planningcommittee member, and chief financial officer and vicepresident of operations for MF Cachat Company,Lakewood. “Our hope is that our students will beleaders who go out intotheir communities andmake a real impact.”Your TurnThanks, Sister Jacquelyn. Keven Krajnak’s generous assistance, the hospitality of everyone connected with theschool, and especially your presence at our events, made us all feel like we had come home to a setting aswelcome and familiar as if we had been meeting on East 107th St.! It is my regret that we did not expose our CLSclassmates to the NDCL experience years ago, because everyone I talked with was impressed with how true NDCLhas been to the spirit and values of CLS. I can assure you that my vote will be to have all of our future reunionslocated on the campus of our alma mater – NDCL.With gratitude,Bob Valerian ‘60 Notre Dame - Cathedral Latin Seasons Fall 2010 2Notre Dame - Cathedral Latin Seasons Fall 2010 3

Transforming Lives ~ Changing the World (continued from page 3)“Entrust yourworks to the Lord, and your planswill succeed.”~ Proverbs 16:3“Finalized in July, the 2010 - 2015 plan differs significantly from its 2005 predecessor”,continues Jarosz. The 2004 -2009 strategic plan focused on establishing thenecessary school infrastructure so NDCL could function on its own. The currectstrategic plan continues NDCL’s focus on its Catholic identity, academic excellenceand its position and presence in the greater community. The seven goals of the newstrategic plan are as follows:1. Renew and further develop NDCL’s culture ofacademic excellence, reflecting the educationalvision and principles of the Sisters of Notre Dame. The plan ensures external measures of student success and 21 stcentury learning experiences.2. To nurture in each student a sense of confidence, self esteem and self awareness grounded in NDCL’smission, vision and core values. As part of the process, the committee reviewed and strengthenedNSCL’s mission, vision and core values. According to Jarosz, the school’scommitment to its Catholic identity and its sustainability initiatives isfocused, direct and clear.3. To strengthen the professional skills and capabilitiesof faculty and staff.Boosting professional skills has a positive affect on academicexcellence. NDCL will continue to implement the latest technologyand sound educational innovations.4. Develop a broader innovative enrollmentmanagementplan.Demographic studies show that the traditional source of enrollment atNDCL – Catholic elementary schools – is shrinking. NDCL will seek newways to reach out into the community and connect with families whomay be interested enrolling a child at NDCL.5. To enhance NDCL’s image and profile. All communications regarding the school will contain a consistent messageand strengthen its position in the community.6. To strengthen NDCL’s Board of Directors, composition, structure, and functioning.“There’s a lot of heavy lifting that needs to be done for the school and a lotof challenges facing Catholic education,” Jarosz says. “We need to continueworking on strengthening the capabilities of the Board of Directors.”7. To enhance NDCL’s capacity to increase its philanthropicsupport and generate new revenue sources.“Giving back secures NDCL’s future,” concluded Jarosz.“Though there are seven goals, it is clear that NDCL needs to develop further sources of revenue besidestraditional fees and tuition. Due to the current economy, more families are qualifying for financial aid. It iscritical for NDCL to connect with its alumni and the community, and educate them on how important theirsupport is”, says Jarosz.“This is the Board’s guiding light for the next five years,” he says. “All of the Board’s work centers aroundwhat’s going on with the plan. It’s a very important document and we’re committed to carrying it throughand accomplishing our goals.”Putting the plan into actionNow that the strategic plan is finalized, the NDCL Board of Directors will assign each of the plan’s goals toa committee so action items, accountability and timelines can be developed.Dr. John Yankey, Ph.D., consultant with Beachwood-based Yankey & Associates, served as facilitator for thecommittee. Yankey, professor emeritus from Case Western Reserve University’s Mandel School of Applied SocialSciences and the Mandel Center for Nonprofit Organizations, was involved with NDCL’s 2004 strategic planning.“Data collection was one area that fell quickly into place”, he says.“Ordinarily, we would do a perceptual analysis survey to get perceptions of strengths and weaknesses of theorganization,” says Yankey. “We were very fortunate because NDCL was going thorough its reaccreditationprocess. Information was gathered in the fall of 2009 from the last six graduating classes of alumni, and fromfaculty, parents and present students.”In addition, the committee analyzed several key reference documents, mainly the report, Dollars and Sense:Catholic High Schools and Their Finances 2009 (Executive Summary), by Mary Frances Taymans, SND, Ed.D.and Christiane Connors. This helped the group better understand how NDCL compares with other Catholichigh schools in characteristics, demographics, enrollment, salary, leadership, administration, governance, and fund development. The committee reviewed the recently conducted assessment of NDCL’s funddevelopment program, created by Yankey’s business partner and wife, Sylvia, in 2009.After working closely with the members of NDCL’s strategic planning committee, Yankey was quiteimpressed with their level of commitment.“I do a number of strategic plans and, ordinarily, even if you already have a lotof the data that I mentioned, planning takes about six months,” he says. “Thiscommittee did this work in a three-month timeframe—they were quiteamazing. I can’t praise them too highly.”Yankey also commends the enthusiasm and intellect of the entire strategicplanning committee, led by co-chairs Linda (Saranita) McHugh NDA ’77,executive administrator for the Cleveland Clinic Foundation, and attorneyand consultant Marty Degnan. Now that the strategic plan is finalized, McHugh will chair a strategicplanning task force. This small group will work with the Board committees andestablish the process for developing the action steps, timeliness andresources needed.“I think we’re going to be working on leveraging a lot of resources in the staff, parent, alumni, and parent communities,” says McHugh. “It’s going to take a groupeffort to get some of these items done.”McHugh predicts that some goals will be met within a short time while otherswill require foundation building. Since the strategic plan is based on NDCL’smission, vision and core values, all committee members will keepthese in mind as they work toward achieving their goals.“I am excited to participate in this process as an alumna of NotreDame Academy,” says McHugh. “It’s good to see that NDCL is sosuccessful and has a distinct identity. I am looking forward tohelping it move into the future.”4 Notre Dame - Cathedral Latin Seasons Seasons Fall 2010 Fall 20105

Every time you volunteer and immerse yourself in the hardshipsand struggles that are all around you, you begin to understand theblessings in your own life. Many are not afforded the same blessings; andI feel it is my responsibility to take advantage and make a difference.I have learned that every opportunity presents new ways to learn, though they are often unanticipated. Say ‘yes’ and you will grow, say‘no’ and you will regress. A great example was lived out by Christ. Honduras’ illiteracy rate nears 24 percent. Many schoolsdo not have electricity or running water. Desks often have to accommodate upto three at a time and supplies are nonexistent. Julian explains, “We are there tohelp them find hope and live a productive and meaningful life.”“The project I was involved in was finishing a sidewalk. Each year the Social Justice Club identifiesprojects to pursue -- such as our ‘Wheels for Justice’ bicycleride to Columbus to voice our opposition to the deathpenalty and our fair-trade fashion show that educatesstudents about Fair Trade.”Fair Trade is an organized social movement and marketbasedapproach that aims to help producers in developingcountries obtain better trading conditions and promotesustainability. The movement advocates the paymentof a higher price to producers as well as social andenvironmental standards. It focuses in particular on exportsfrom developing countries to developed countries, mostnotably handicrafts, coffee, cocoa, sugar, tea, bananas, honey, cotton, wine, fresh fruit, chocolate, flowers and gold. The Social Justice Club is aligned with Catholic Schools forPeace and Justice, sponsored by the Catholic Diocese. From there, hecompleted a one-year internship with the American Red Cross to become a specialist inblood banking. With this critical skill acquired, he was hired as the blood bank technicalsupervisor at MetroHealth Medical Center. Part of his job responsibilities included staffeducation and training. After nine years in this position, Savastano left MetroHealth to serve as the regulatory managerof the Red Cross for two years. The regulatory manager position was a great opportunity, butit lacked two qualities that Savastano enjoyed about his previous position -- working in thelab and training staff. Therefore, he left the Red Cross to work at Allogen Laboratories at theCleveland Clinic.“I worked in the Cleveland Clinic’s Transplant Lab matching organs from both cadaver donorsand living donors,” Savastano explains. “I loved tissue-typing or histocompatibility. NDCL Board Member Extols Valueof Catholic Education“A Catholic education will always be important. Its values, history andphilosophy are what make it incredibly useful throughout life,” insists DougHogan, a member of the NDCL Board of Directors, and manager of ExternalAffairs with FirstEnergy (Cleveland Electric Illuminating Company).Dear Friends of NDCL,This fall edition of Seasons gives evidence to the growth, vitality and influence of ourstudents, faculty, alumni and Board members. Once again, NDCL’s campaign prioritiesbecame a reality over the summer months: the cafeteria was renovated into a placewhere teenagers can experience community; a new phone system is in operation andthe security system was upgraded to assure a safe campus. We have been faithful tothe campaign priorities and each year our families and alumni are enjoying the benefits:lights at Lion Stadium, tennis courts, accessible parking, and a significant upgrade ininstructional technology. It is evident that progress happens at NDCL.Serving the three county area of Geauga, Lake and eastern Cuyahoga, NDCL moves intothe future on solid ground. In August, NDCL welcomed 760 new and returning students. This growing enrollment is a testament to our solid reputation as a leader in Catholiceducation. And, it is clear that our students, parents and alumni have a deep belief inthe mission of NDCL.Hogan graduated from Chardon High School in 1973 andadmits it wasn’t until attending John Carroll University thathe realized the tremendous value of a Catholic education.John Carroll was also the place that Doug met his wifeof 30 years, Cathy. Hogan earned a B.A. in educationfrom John Carroll in 1977, and later went on to receivea master’s degree in Education from Bowling GreenState University in 1980. In 1988, he graduated from theUniversity of Toledo College of Law.He recalls how he first became acquainted with NDCL. “Ihave been a sports fan all my life. I remember readingabout Cathedral Latin and its intense rivalries andsuccesses against various schools in the Cleveland area.Later, I will never forget reading about Latin closing itsdoors and how sad I felt,” Hogan reflects. “As for NotreDame Academy, I had friends that attended therewhen I was in high school. I was aware of its wonderfuleducational reputation.”The excellent standing of both schools led Hogan and hiswife Cathy to send their two children to NDCL, Douglas‘05 and Madison ‘09. “Cathy and I were active at the schoolwhile my son and daughter attended, and I was honoredto even be considered for a Board position. I have servedon the NDCL Board of Directors for one year now. I’m stilla rookie,” he cautions with a chuckle. Cathy continuesto volunteer working on the school’s premier fundraiser,Lion’s Mane Event. In addition to the outstanding education his childrenreceived in preparation for college, Hogan is impressedwith the school’s mission, vision and core values. “Theeducators at NDCL want students to be more than justsuccessful when they leave; they want their alumni toshare their gifts and make a difference in the world,” statesHogan. “The administration and Sisters of Notre Damelead by example and instill this desire in their students.”Hogan models a life of service as well, volunteering onfour additional Boards across northeast Ohio:• Parma Area Chamber of Commerce – where he servedas President and is currently on the Board.• The Brooklyn Chamber of Commerce – which hehelped form nearly seven years ago and is currently theVice President.• 3 Corner Round Pack Outfit – a summer camp for boys14 -15 years old that travels to Independence, Californiafor two months to work and hike in the High Sierras. The trip is designed to build self confidence, selfreliance and mold boys into men; and• Cleveland Speech and Hearing CenterHe smiles, explaining the personal satisfaction hereceives serving on the Cleveland Hearing & SpeechCenter Board. “Forty years ago, the President of CEIhad a daughter with hearing problems and served onthe board. Since then, CEI always had a representativeon the board. My job in government affairs enabledme to help the Cleveland Hearing & Speech Centerby providing valuable connections,” prefaces Hogan. However, his story really begins years earlier.“I played on a little league all-star team in Chardon whenI was approximately 12 years old. On that team was aboy my age named Tom that could not hear or speak.I remember sitting next to him in the dugout and beingunable to communicate with him. I cried at home thatnight. He had such a profound impact on me,” Hoganrecalls. “I prayed for Tom every night and at church foryears for a miracle.”Ironically, Hogan ran into this man outside the Walmart inChardon last September. “I saw two people signing, andafter I walked into the store, I turned around and ran backto the parking lot. That was Tom 40 years later. I had toask the ‘Private Ryan’ question: ‘Has he had a good life?’His daughter responded that ‘yes, he has been a verysuccessful carpenter, is married and has three daughtersof which I am one.’”“At that moment I realized God had answered myprayers as a child,” he says with tears in his eyes. “It’s stilla hard story to tell. God told me at that moment, ‘I tookcare of him for you.’ It also dawned on me that is why Iam on the Cleveland Hearing & Speech Center Board.”Hogan continues, “My employer FirstEnergy iscommitted, active and engaged in the communitiesthey serve. FirstEnergy allows me to do what I doon these boards, and they will match the funds thatI give. As board members, we become one of thecommunity leaders. It’s good for me as an employeeand demonstrates that my company really cares aboutthe communities we serve.” His office is located inConcord, Ohio. Hogan acts as a liaison between thepublic and FirstEnergy, and prior to this position heworked for the company as a lobbyist in Columbus.“Serving on the NDCL Board is my way ofgiving back to the Sisters of Notre Dameand the administration at NDCL for thewonderful education they gave my sonand daughter,” he says.Hogan is excited about the school’s2010-2015 strategic plan, TransformingLives ~ Changing the World. “With thisstrategic plan, we move forward in a timewhen continuous improvement and theuse of new innovations will be attractiveto prospective students -- especially in acompetitive environment among otherCatholic, college-preparatory schools.”He reminds members of the NDCLcommunity that while we have awonderful story to tell, we must continueto strategically plan for the future.Revenue generated through the NDCLCapital Campaign provides a means tomake facility and technology upgrades aswell as offer financial assistance to thosedesiring a Catholic education for theirchildren who have limited financial means.“We are in a very competitiveenvironment. NDCL must continue toenhance its image and profile in northeastOhio and explain that our tuition isaffordable. We give every student $1,000off the actual cost of tuition. Moreover, for those families who can afford it, theyare encouraged to make up the $1,000difference in the form of a tax-deductiblegift,” Hogan says. “I believe every childshould be able to come if they qualify.”Doug and Cathy are proud parentsof Madison, now a sophomore at theUniversity at Buffalo (SUNY) and Dougrecently graduated from Ohio University. The Auburn Township residents takepleasure in working in their yard andgardening together. Hogan also enjoyshiking and hunting with his son, especiallyduring deer season. As a Board, we are committed to the lasting value of a Catholic secondary educationborne of the strong traditions of Notre Dame Academy and Cathedral Latin School.Having successfully completed our last five year plan, NDCL is poised to strengthenand solidify our reputation as a community of faith and learning. Consequently, inJuly, the Board of Members approved NDCL’s new five-year strategic plan, TransformingLives ~ Changing the World, 2010-2015. And, while it’s costly - often requiring sacrifice- we believe a Catholic education at NDCL is a gift that gives its graduates a foothold asnothing else does. For this reason, growing revenue from sources other than tuition and fees is a criticalelement in securing NDCL’s future. It is so important, in fact, that it is listed as a goal inour new strategic plan.Let me share with you some current statistics:Revenue• This past fiscal year the NDCL Fund saw an increase of 25% over the previous year. Our goal over the next five years is to double this amount.• NDCL’s capital campaign, Igniting a Spirit of Community & Faith, has secured $2.7Min cash and commitments of its $4.5M goal. The Capstone Projects (creation of adedicated performing arts space and construction of a new Athletic Center) remain. The $1M Challenge Grant from the Edward A. and Catherine L.
