New EndowedScholarship MemorializesJim Ramsey ’52As a student at Cathedral Latin School,Jim Ramsey seemed to be everywhere.One classmate referred to Jim as “JoeLatin” because he personified the verybest in the school. His list of accomplishmentswas filled with activities thatincluded football and basketball,Sodality, National Honor Society andeven the Dance Committee. He alsoserved as president of the Class of 1952.Through the decades that followed, Jimremained engaged with Cathedral Latin and NDCL until hisuntimely death in November of 2008. Jim died following a courageousbattle with brain cancer. Known and respected for his intellectand hard work, Jim had a very successful career with IBMand retired from there. He was widowed and re-married, a fatherand grandfather, and had a special passion for golf, including agolf hole in his back yard in Leander, TX. Though a long-timeTexas resident, Jim remained a loyal “Lion” all his life. Regularlyattending his class reunions, participatingin Latin alumni activities, and watchingfootball games at NDCL’s LionStadium – all brought great joy to Jim.He even volunteered to serve on theCampaign Cabinet for NDCL’s $4.5 millioncapital campaign. Jim also stayed connectedwith many of his classmates “online” until his health began to fail.Some of those classmates were somoved at Jim’s passing that they initiatedan endowed scholarship in his memoryat NDCL. Classmates Leo Dardy, ArtBostwick and Ron Bogolin put togetheran effort that has so far generated over$18,000 and successfully established theJim Ramsey ’52 Memorial Endowed Scholarship at NDCL. Hyland’77, Director of Advancement at NDCL, at leo.hyland@ndcl.org orby phone at 888.214.8109 x264.NEWS FlashCounselors bring expertise,enthusiasm to NDCLWith a new name, new faces, and a renewed focus onservice to our students, parents, and faculty, NDCL’sOffice of College, Counseling and Support Services(OCCSS) hit the ground running when school resumedthis fall.School counselors Mrs. Rachel Siegel, Mr. MarkKasunic, Mrs. Donna Pugh Blevins, and schoolpsychologist/school counselor Mrs. Kathy Sanbornhave been eagerly meeting with students about courses,colleges, and beginning-of-the-year transitions.According to Mrs. Siegel, who directs the office, thecounselors chose the OCCSS name to better reflecttheir mission and service in NDCL’s college preparatoryenvironment. “The new name is more than semantics,”she explained. “We are working hard to craft a programthat responds effectively to the needs of our students andtheir parents.”Mrs. Siegel comes to NDCL from an international collegepreparatory school in LaPaz, Bolivia, where she successfullydeveloped and implemented comprehensive counselingprogramming to meet both student and parentneeds, including college information workshops, careerexploration opportunities, student support groups, andpeer mentoring.Mrs. Pugh Blevins is also new to NDCL. As a leader andmember of numerous professional organizations forcollege admissions counseling, Mrs. Pugh Blevins hasestablished professionalrelationshipswith admissions officersat colleges anduniversities throughoutthe United States.A past president ofRachel Siegel, Guidance Office Director the Ohio Associationfor CollegeAdmissionsCounseling (OACAC), she is a recognized expert on thecollege selection and application process. In fact, shetrains new college admissions counselors forthe OACAC.In Mr. Kasunic’s more than 20 years as a school counselor,he has developed a professional repertoire of skills toprovide individualized counseling support to our students.Fourteen years of combined experience as a schoolcounselor and school psychologist have enabled Mrs.Sanborn to develop keen insight into all aspects of anadolescent’s growth and development with specificexpertise in mental health and wellness services.All four counselors are strong advocates for each student’sacademic, personal, and career development. Parents may also sign upfor alerts when your account balance runs low.Corlett, Ulle earn Eagle Scout distinctionCongratulations to seniorsTim Corlett and Ben Ulle,who were honored by theBoy Scouts of America withthe prestigious Eagle ScoutAward during a court ofhonor at Saint GabrielChurch this fall.For his Eagle ScoutLeadership Project, Tim renovatedthe landscaping atthe Father Hanzo Center ofSaint Mary Church inTim CorlettBen UllePainesville. The center’s entrance now features a more attractiveentrance, complete with new raised landscape beds and an irrigationsystem.Ben designed, funded, and built a therapeutic garden for Mentor’sCrossroads Adolescent Counseling Center for his Eagle project. Thegarden helps children with severe behavioral issues learn responsibilityand nurturing.Tim and Ben also completed an 80-mile backpacking trek in theSangria de Cristo Mountains in northern New Mexico.
