Welcome to the 22nd edition of the Carlisle Chrysler 

Nationals! As always, this is YOUR show, and I’m 

honored to have the opportunity to present it to you for 

my sixth year. Last year in this column, I told you of my 

connection to Mopars since birth; coming home from 

the hospital in my parents’ 1966 Charger. The year before 

that, I included a picture of me with my high school ride 

from the ‘80s (a Sublime Dart) and my present-day toy, a 

’67 Belvedere with major suspension upgrades. 

The point is that this hobby is always changing and 

I’ve tried to follow those changes since the beginning. 

In my opinion, there is no wrong aspect of the Mopar 

hobby, but it seems to cycle between stock and modifi 

ed. Right now the trend is toward modifi ed cars that 

were built to drive, but O.E. restorations are still very 

popular, too. With money being in short supply compared 

with fi ve years ago, more owners are fi nding it 

impractical to own a car that needs to be hauled everywhere. 

This is a great hobby with a great variety of options 

when it comes to building a Mopar, and there is 

no wrong answer. For those who want to drive their 

classic and be able to do it safely with today’s traffi c, 

there are lots of options when it comes to brakes and 

suspension — the two main areas that need to be upgraded. 

Hotchkis Sport Suspension off ers one option, 

and it’s just about all bolt-on components, allowing 

the owner to return it to stock if the mood ever strikes.

One thing that hasn’t changed in the hobby is the 

legendary status of Richard Petty. We are honored to 

have The King at the Chrysler Nationals this year for 

the fi rst time ever. His appearance is courtesy of the 

Northeast Hemi Owners Association. He’s only here on 

Sunday from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., so be sure to make your 

way to the stage for an autograph!

ACC'S MOPAR MUSCLE 

If you’re into all things Chrysler, you’ve come to the right 

place. From ’Cudas to Challengers, Polaras to Road 

Runners, and Power Wagons to Imperials, it’s all here. 

Mopar or no car, as the saying goes. 

American muscle is by defi nition over the top in both 

appearance and performance, and Chrysler built some 

of the most notorious examples around — with some 

of the most powerful engines ever to come out of Detroit. 

Win on Sunday, sell on Monday was never so true as 

it was for Mopar in the heyday of the muscle car. Those 

383-, 440- and Hemi-powered rockets cleaned up in 

street races across this country, and they command big 

dollars in the market today. 

In recent years, Chrysler has spearheaded the return 

of the American muscle car into the new car market, and 

the results have been spectacular. What’s not to love 

about the modern Challenger R/T and SRT8? They off er 

the same aggressive look as the originals with modern 

reliability, economy, and top-level performance. 

ACC just got into a Dodge of our own. Ours is a 1963 

440 2-door post with an Indy Maxx 500-ci all-aluminum 

Hemi and push-button TorqueFlite auto. Even the GM 

and Ford guys on our staff can’t deny its brute power 

and cool factor — and even if they did, its 10-second 

quarter-mile timeslips would shut them down.

YOUNG GUNS — FUTURE OF THE HOBBY ••••• 

The younger generation is the future of the Mopar 

hobby and we want to make sure they have a home 

at the Chrysler Nationals. If you haven’t checked out 

the Young Guns classes yet, you might be surprised to 

see that what they are doing isn’t a whole lot diff erent 

than what we “old-timers” are used to. Young Guns 

classes are open to licensed drivers ages 16-25.

There are so many things that 

folks remember about the Dukes 

of Hazzard including the characters, 

the stunts and the cars. 

When it comes to the characters 

just about everybody remembers 

the shorts that Daisy Duke 

wore. In fact, they are so popular 

they took on her name. In honor of Catherine Bach’s 

appearance at the show this year, we are hosting our 

fi rst-ever Daisy Dukes Contest. Grab your best pair of

The Volunteers is the United States Army’s six-piece 

premier touring rock band. Since 1981, this talented 

group has performed in all 50 states, Puerto Rico, 

Central America and Europe. The band performs rock, 

country, pop and other current styles of music. People 

nationwide are captivated by their fast-paced, highenergy 

shows. One young woman commented, “I love 

the music they sang, and the fact that they are in the 

Army — they rock!” The mission of The United States 

Army Field Band is to “carry into the grassroots of our 

country the story of our magnifi cent Army.” In performances

It’s back. For the sixth consecutive year, the Mopar® 

“Top Eliminator” program will recognize the “best of 

the best” — the most skilled Mopar enthusiasts and 

their restyled, customized and accessorized Chrysler 

Group LLC vehicles. Beginning this year, OWNERS WHO 

WISH TO HAVE THEIR CARS CONSIDERED FOR THE “TOP ELIMINA- 

TOR” MUST SUBMIT AN ENTRY FORM TO THE MOPAR DISPLAY AT 

THE EVENT. Forms are available at the Mopar display. 

The long-running program shines a light on passionate 

and dedicated Mopar enthusiasts who display 

unmatched skill in modifying or preserving a classic or 

modern-day Mopar vehicle. As in previous years, 2012 

Mopar “Top Eliminator” winners will be honored by 

having their vehicles showcased in the Mopar display 

at the Specialty Equipment Market Association (SEMA) 


show in Las Vegas, Oct. 30–Nov. 2, 2012. 

Bob Villiger of Mountain Home, AR, was named the 

Mopar “Top Eliminator” winner at the 2011 Carlisle 

Chrysler Nationals for his 1969 Dodge Coronet (pictured 

above). Villiger restored his Coronet in his own 

shop using numerous Mopar Performance parts. 

“We are proud to ring in the sixth year of the Mopar 

‘Top Eliminator’ program, which recognizes elite Mopar 

enthusiasts and their amazing rides,” said Pietro Gorlier, 

President and CEO of Mopar, Chrysler Group LLC’s service, 

parts and customer-care brand. “The program has 

grown in popularity each year and has helped spotlight 

passionate Mopar brand ambassadors. We look 

forward to once again having the Mopar ‘Top Eliminator’ 

winners join us in the Mopar display at SEMA.”

The concept of television has existed for well over 100 

years in one form or another. What has remained 

constant through the years is that a hit TV program can 

do more to carry on the legend of its stars, cars and characters 

than anyone could have ever imagined. A prime 

example of a TV program far outliving its expectations is 

Dukes of Hazzard. 

It’s because of the demand, popularity and loveable 

nature of the show that the automotive world 

and mainstream society embrace stars from Dukes at 

events like the Carlisle Chrysler Nationals. That is why 

this weekend’s guests, Ben Jones and Catherine Bach, 

join previous guests James Best (Sheriff Roscoe P. Coltrane), 

John Schneider (Bo Duke), Byron Cherry (Coy 

Duke) and the late Christopher Mayer (Vance Duke). 

The drawing power for the Dukes is such that in 

2011, during a year littered with poor weather at all 

10 Carlisle-based shows, John Schneider’s visit saw the 

biggest one-day attendance spike in the history of the 

event. So why do the Dukes keep coming to Carlisle 

and why do people keep coming to see them? 

“Sometimes the phenomenon amazes us,” noted 

Dorothy Best, wife of James Best. With both being 

here in 2010, she continued, “I was told we’d see a big 

turnout at Carlisle but we were truly surprised at everyone 

that showed up.” Best concluded by noting, “I 

don’t know if there is a defi nitive answer as to why the 

show has been so successful over time, but it and fans 

like those at Carlisle a few years ago have been very 

good to us.” 

From a Carlisle standpoint, event manager Ed Buczeskie 

has been responsible for booking fi ve of the six 

Dukes stars. He continues to do so for a myriad of reasons, 

outlined in a recent conversation: 

Michael Garland – Why do you book Dukes’ stars? 

EB – Like many Mopar fans I literally grew up on 

the Dukes. Watching that Charger every Friday night 

was partly responsible for my passion for Mopars. It 

brought the Charger into the public’s eye and it has 

stood the test of time.

Meet this NASCAR Legend and 

seven-time Winston Cup Champion! 

Due to the Daytona NASCAR race on Saturday night of the 

Carlisle Chrysler Nationals, Petty is only able to appear on 

Sunday and is scheduled to sign autographs from 11 a.m. to 

1 p.m. An autograph and/or photo opportunity will be free 

with a paid admission to the event, but due to anticipated 

high demand, a limited number will be possible. Carlisle 

Events and representatives from Petty’s Garage will assure 

that as many people as possible can meet “The King.” 

MG – What do you think is the draw? 

EB – A whole generation was raised on the Dukes. 

It’s not just Mopar people who like it, either. The show 

crosses brands and is enjoyed by many non-car enthusiasts 

as well. It was a wholesome show and it was just 

fun to watch … and still is today. 

MG – How do you go about landing the guests? 

EB – Believe it or not, every Dukes cast member at 

the show in the last fi ve years was presented to me in 

some fashion; either by an agent, mutual friend or directly. 

The Dukes of Hazzard celebrities are always popular 

at the show and as the word spreads among the 

cast, each of them eventually fi nd themselves here. 

MG – What are your thoughts for next year? 

EB – Ideas range from Tom Wopat to “The Hazzard 

County Cops” to a full Dukes Reunion with all of the remaining 

cast members. It’s all a matter of budget and 

not wanting to cause Dukes overload for our guests. 

CATHERINE BACH ••••••••••••••••••••••••••••• 

Catherine Bach is famously known 

for her role on the long running CBS 

program the Dukes of Hazzard, due in 

part to her eye catching looks, country 

girl charm and namesake Daisy 

Duke Shorts. Bach has appeared in 

multiple fi lms and TV programs, beginning 

with 1974’s The Midnight Man alongside Hollywood 

icon Burt Lancaster. Other credits include The 

Love Boat, Cannon Ball Run II, African Skies and most 

recently Chapman. Bach has also lent her name to a 

clothing line, CB by Catherine Bach. Apparel includes 

jeans, skirts, shirts and the famed Daisy Dukes. 

BEN JONES •••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••• 

Ben Jones appeared in 142 episodes over the 

course of the run of Dukes as Cooter Davenport – Hazard 

County mechanic and friend of the Duke family. 

Jones’ acting career has spanned fi ve decades, but 

took a political detour following the end of his run on 

the Dukes of Hazzard. From 1989-93 

Jones served as a member of the 

U.S. House of Representatives from 

Georgia’s 4th District. Most recently, 

Jones appeared in an episode of the 

TV show Surface. Jones is also the 

founder of the original Duke Fest and is a musician, 

having appeared on the stage of the famed Grand Ole 

Opry. 

THE RAMCHARGERS •••••••••••••••••••••••••• 

2012 is another big year for The RAMCHARGERS as 

they are not only our special guests this weekend but 

they are also being inducted into the inaugural Mopar 

Collector’s Guide Mopar Hall of Fame. Members of The 

RAMCHARGERS will make appearances in the MOPAR 

and Mancini Racing booths on the Midway this weekend. 

You can also sit in on a panel discussion with original 

members of the RAMCHARGERS (see Schedule for 

details). RAMCHARGERS members scheduled to appear 

include: Tom Hoover, Tom Coddington, Mike Buckel, Al 

Adam, John Wehrly, Dave Rockwell, Barns Danials, Pete 

McNicholl, Dick Skoglund and Troy Simonsen. 

HERB MCCANDLESS •••••••••••••••••••••••••• 

Known as Mr. Mopar or Mr. 

4-speed, Herb McCandless has been 

a drag racing legend and automotive 

performance wizard for over 40 

years. Elected to the NHRA Southeast 

Division Hall of Fame in 1988, 

McCandless won the U.S. Nationals 

in 1970 driving the No. 24 Sox and Martin Pro Stock car. 

McCandless also gained notoriety for his strip work in 

his Pro Stock Cuda. McCandless became involved in 

Chrysler’s race program in 1965 and raced Hemi cars 

from 1965-1974. In 1974, he started McCandless Performance, 

one of the largest Chrysler Direct Connection 

and Mopar Performance dealers. A Hemi hero of 

drag racing, McCandless won championships in Darts, 

Dusters and Barracudas. 

LOU SANTIAGO •••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••• 

Lou is the host of Velocity’s Car Fix where he and his 

co-host modify vehicles with high-end performance 

and aftermarket parts. Lou was previously the host of 

Discovery’s Ultimate Car Build Off and Spike TV’s Muscle 

Car. His time spent on Muscle Car only proved to 

the world that his love for his art was limitless. Now, 

Lou has a new home and it is called GarageInsiderTV. 

com. He will be building some really cool stuff and 

showing the masses once again that you too can be a 

car builder extraordinaire. 

DAVID SNYDER ••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••• 

Celebrated automotive artist David Snyder is in 

Building T with a display of his automotive art featuring 

vehicles produced by Chrysler. Stop by and see 

fi rst-hand his artistic ability as he is working on new 

paintings throughout the weekend. Snyder is also 

available to personalize his new book The Automotive 

Art of David Snyder. 

BILL STILES ••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••• 

Bill Stiles is known not only as 

one of the pioneer drivers of Super 

Stock and Pro Stock racing but also 

as an expert performance and racing 

mechanic. As a driver, Stiles is 

most widely known for racing one 

of the original factory SS/BA Hemipowered 

Plymouth Barracudas. As a mechanic, Stiles 

geared Jere Stahl and Dave Strickler to many victories 

on the quarter mile. For the ’70 season, Bill moved to 

Pro Stock with a Duster that he ran until 1973. Today, he 

is known as an expert in preparing magneto ignition 

systems for racing applications out of his shop Stiles 

Performance in York, PA. Bill Stiles is here with the Barracuda 

all weekend in the Mopar Booth on the Midway 

to meet with fans and to talk racing and Mopars. 

DAN WOODS •••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••• 

Dan Woods is best known in the automotive world 

as the host of Speed Channel’s Chop Cut Rebuild and 

Street Tuner Challenge. Before he began hosting car 

programs on Speed, he became famous world-wide 

for his role as Mr. Raditch on the Emmy Award winning 

Degrassi television series. Dan will be here this weekend 

making appearances in the Legendary Auto Interiors 

booth in spaces N52-67. See schedule for times. 

SAM AUXIER, JR. •••••••••••••••••••••••••••••• 

We are pleased to have Sam Auxier, Jr. – known for 

“interviewing the greatest names in racing” – join us 

again. Sam plans to broadcast Thursday, Friday and 

Saturday from Building T. Sam is a 2000 Super Car Hall 

of Famer and a 2002 inductee to the Drag Times Hall 

of Fame. Come out and meet this drag racing legend. 

RICH NEDBAL ••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••• 

Richard was the founder of Mopar 

Engines West and now runs FAST 

Man EFI. He has published numerous 

articles in Mopar publications 

and written a successful book about 

how to build high performance Gen 

2 HEMIs. In the USAF Richard was an 

electronics instructor. In 1970 he landed a job doing 

EFI research at Carnegie Mellon Institute. He was part 

of a team, designing one of the fi rst microprocessor 

based sequential EFI systems. After the EFI research 

ended in 1976, Richard moved to California’s Silicon 

Valley where he became an engineering manager 

for a semiconductor company, all while building Hemis 

in his spare time and getting ready to reenter the 

drag racing scene. After designing semiconductors 

and running two software companies, Richard was 

lucky enough to be able to retire at age 55 and spend 

more time in the shop, where he founded Mopar Engines 

West. At MEW Rich was building all variations of 

Mopar engines from Slant-6s to all out blown Hemis. 

After selling MEW, Richard started another business 

called Fast Man EFI, where he sells, trains and supports 

the EFI market. In 2010 Richard wrote the book, “How 

to Build Max-Performance HEMI Engines”.

IN LOVING MEMORY 

It was just two years ago that I had even heard Eli’s 

name for the fi rst time but his story struck a chord with 

me. During the 2010 Chrysler Nationals we were trying 

to make it a weekend to remember for John Kozak who 

had just lost his girlfriend to cancer and now he was battling 

the disease himself. Through John I learned about 

Eli and his struggles with cancer since childhood. I also 

learned that Eli was from Connecticut so I reached out to 

the one person I knew who lived in the same state and 

would be more than willing to help. That person was 

Ralph Barbagallo. 

Together a plan was quickly hatched to get our 

hands on Eli’s 1966 Dart convertible and do our own 

version of the 

TV show Overhaulin’. 

We rallied 

members 

of Mopars in 

Motion and 

Mopar Rebellion 

but we still 

needed a place 

to do the work. 

I immediately 

thought of the 

two people in 

New England with the biggest hearts in the hobby 

and by sheer luck they also happen to have one of 

the best-equipped shops and skills of any hobbyists I 

know. Within less than 30 minutes after I sent an email 

I got a call back from Gary Beineke saying that he had 

talked to his wife, Pam, and they only had one question; 

how soon can you get the car to us? 

From there it was on. Calls were made for donations 

and parts. Within days we literally had parts coming to 

us from all across the country. Nobody asked, “What’s 

in it for me?” Instead, we typically were asked, “What 

do you need?” We weren’t dealing with an unlimited 

budget and as parts were arriving we knew we had a 

deadline. The car was delivered to the Beinekes on July 

25 and the goal was to have the car done by September 

19 so the car could be presented to Eli at a Mopar 

show at Artioli Dodge in CT. 

While there was no TV drama and the deadline was 

a self-imposed goal, we were racing against the clock 

because nobody knew just how much time Eli had left 

and we all wanted him to have as much time as possible 

to enjoy the car. Lots of people worked on the car 

in one capacity or another but Gary and Pam put their 

projects on hold and did the lion’s share of the work… 

all without a single complaint. Like I said, there was no 

TV drama. 

Parts were still arriving and work was still being 

done right up until the day before the reveal. On Sun-

day, September 19, Eli’s Dart Charger was sitting in the 

showroom of Artioli Dodge under a cover with pillows 

strategically placed to disguise the fi nal shape. A few 

hours before the cover was pulled off I fi nally met Eli 

for the fi rst time. He was very open about his condition 

and after that fi rst meeting I felt like I had known him 

for years. 

As soon as the cover was pulled from the fresh Dart 

Charger, Eli hopped in and drove out of the showroom. 

His smile more than made up for his lack of words. The 

entire crowd was choked up and just watched as Eli 

hit the open road for the fi rst time. He returned a short 

time later, still grinning from ear to ear. The emotions 

fl ooded back 

in as Eli went 

around giving 

hugs to everyone 

involved 

with the project.

where 

Eli’s Dart was 

featured in 

Building T and Eli himself was treated like a celebrity 

all weekend. Always thinking of others fi rst, when he 

became exhausted each day he would actually call me 

to ask if it was okay for him to go back to his hotel and 

get some rest. By Sunday he was visibly exhausted but 

he still wanted to help load his car on the trailer and 

help his friends load theirs for the trip home. 

Sadly, that was the last time I got to see Eli. We kept 

in touch through phone calls, email and Facebook. 

On the morning of October 6 my cell phone rang and 

the call was coming from Ralph. I instantly knew why 

he was calling. I briefl y thought about letting it go to 

voicemail but I was so sure of the reason for his call 

that it was pointless. 

I think part of the reason why I debated about answering 

that call was because I was headed to Ocean 

City, MD for their Endless Summer car show and didn’t 

want to ruin my weekend with the bad news. As soon 

as I arrive in Ocean City I unloaded my Belvedere and 

began to cruise the beach knowing that’s exactly what 

Eli would’ve wanted to do. 

I look at everything a little diff erently these days 

thanks to Eli. He was defi nitely a fi ghter and I never 

heard him complain about his situation nor bring anyone 

else down because of it. I want to give my sincerest 

gratitude to everyone who was involved with Eli’s 

Dart Charger. We miss you, buddy. The show won’t be 

the same without you.

Although we have “HEMI” in our name, we’re not 

strictly for HEMI owners. We’re a club for all MOPAR 

enthusiasts and their families. The NeHOA was formed 

in 1976 and incorporated in Delaware in 1977. As 

many non-HEMI MOPAR owners became interested, 

the NeHOA has become one of the oldest and strongest 

Chrysler clubs in the country. We currently have 

approximately 170 members. The NeHOA holds two 


meets annually over the Memorial Day (2012: Jim 

Thorpe, PA) and Labor Day (2011: Rochester, NY) 

weekends at locations throughout the northeastern 

United States.

2GN.org was created in May 2004 to help bring 

together the owners of the second-generation Neon 

(2GN). Word spread over various web forums, and

MOD TOP DISPLAY BUILDING Y 

Every car enthusiast thinks his or her favorite brand of 

car is the best, fastest, rarest, most valuable, etc. All of 

that is debatable and will likely never be resolved. However, 

when it comes to wild graphics and colors most 

folks agree that Chrysler vehicles win that battle hands 

down! With colors like Plum Crazy, Panther Pink, Curious 

Yellow, Sublime and Lemon Twist as well as graphics 

like the ’71 ‘Cuda billboard, AAR strobe stripe and 340 

Wedge decals, the other brands can just throw in the 

towel now. 

As wild as all of those were, the fl oral interiors and 

tops, better known as Mod Tops, were probably the 

pinnacle in excess — even for Chrysler Corporation. 

Even in the psychedelic era of ’69 and ’70, these patterns 

proved to be too much, and as a result, Mod Top 

cars are very rare today. Even though they were avail-

able on everything from six-cylinder A-Bodies to the 

Hemi ’Cuda owned by Steven Juliano, very few were 

bought back in the day and even fewer still exist. 

This display of factory Mod Top cars ranges from 

a totally unrestored ’69 Barracuda that was literally 

dragged out of the woods to a well-preserved Survivor 

and several beautifully restored examples. We are 

also pleased to have at least one of each body style (A, 

B & E) on display this weekend.

best reference for restoring a car is to look at ones that are still the way 

they came off of the assembly lines. Stop by the Mopar Survivors tent 

and take lots of reference photos for your restoration project and enhance 

your knowledge. Even if you aren’t restoring a Mopar, you owe it to yourself 

to see these historic treasures. They still have their original factory-applied 

paint, interiors and drivetrains, or at least a minimum of 85% of them. Carlisle

We all know that Chrysler kept performance alive a lot longer than the 

other manufacturers by continuing the full line of performance off erings 

through 1971. Although horsepower ratings and compression were 

down a little, you could still buy everything from the 340 to the 440+6. 

This year we are pleased to present some of the rarest and coolest 

Mopars made in ’72. Not many people restore 318 cars, but Beeney Motors 

has what are arguably the nicest ’72 Scamp and Satellite Sebring Plus on 

the planet. How about not one, but two ’72 Chargers with a 440, 4-speed 

and a Dana 60? Oh, and one of them is a factory sunroof car — in black — 

and it’s a Survivor! If stock isn’t enough for you, some of the cars have been 

hopped up a little — you know, for those occasional trips to the track or 

maybe just to remind the guys on Saturday night that Mopars still rule the 

street! Maybe you’re still not convinced and feel that even the baddest 

street car is still too tame. To satisfy

VENDOR FEATURE: HERB’S PARTS 

Mopar Madness has reached unmatched 

levels both at Carlisle and within the collector 

car hobby. With this weekend’s event, 

there are a few things you can do that make 

being a fan of the Mopar brand very easy. Meet 

celebrities — check; sit in on seminars led by industry 

professionals — check; be part of a showfi 

eld that hosts a few thousand of Detroit’s best 

— check; and shop for parts and accessories to 

help with either the upkeep or restoration of your prized 

ride — check! 

As the annual event goes, the world’s largest all- 

Mopar swap meet is a popular destination for enthusiasts, 

and one of its popular vendors is Herb Reynolds 

of Delaware and the purveyor of Herb’s Auto Parts. 

Herb and his parts have been coming to the Chrysler 

Nationals since its inception in 1991 and can be found 

this weekend in Row IA, Spaces 5-13 (same row as the 

Guest Services building). 

There are many great vendors here this weekend 

and Herb’s Parts is one of them, but what brought 

Herb here in the fi rst place and what keeps him coming 

back? “I’ve been at this event since day one and at 

Carlisle for a few years before that,” said Herb from his 

always-busy offi ce. “Carlisle is well known for all of its 

shows, not only the size and reach of them all, but the 

way each of them are so well-presented. What Carlisle 

does works, and the people that have been coming to 

Carlisle have been very good to us over the years.” 

Might it be the parts themselves that draw the interest 

of those shopping the swap meet at Carlisle? 

Based on his web site promotion alone, it’s clear to see 

that Herb’s Parts are something special. According to

for more than 30 years, specializing in 1963–1974 

Chrysler, Plymouth and Dodge parts and accessories. 

Our goal is to continually expand the inventory for

All of that sounds good on paper (or online), but 

Herb’s Parts not only talks the talk, they walk the walk. 

With a great array of A-, B-, C- and E-Body parts as well 

as 2006–12 models and even truck accessories, Herb’s 

Parts believes that a great mix of supplies helps keep 

the people coming. 

“Not only do people come see us in droves at Carlisle, 

we see a lot of Web traffi c, too. I always encourage 

someone who interested in a part to pre-order, but I 

do advise at least two weeks’ notice,” Herb said. “In addition, 

if someone wants to buy on-site from us, they’ll 

see great show specials and, better yet, will save on 


shipping costs.” 

One of the more popular aspects of what Herb’s 

Parts does is their wall of carpet. This weekend, they 

have 100 sets of carpet and want you to stop by to 

see what works best for you. Herb continued by saying 

that, “The Carlisle Chrysler Nationals has become 

our biggest show, and we believe what makes us successful 

is not only our wide variety of parts, but our 

friendly customer service. We always have a smile on 

our faces. In fact, I want everyone to know that if they 

order online, there is a great chance that I’m smiling 

when I review their Web order.”

A DRIVE IN TO OUR LIFE 

“A Drive In To Our Life” is an essay written by local Big Spring 

High School student Shannon Hamblin. Her honors English 

class teacher, Ms. Courtney Moore, shared it with Carlisle 

Events due to its grassroots automotive theme, and in turn, 

the staff was so moved that they invited Shannon and her 

father to attend the event as celebrity guests and gave her 

a complimentary showfi eld registration so that she may be 

able to show her car next year. 

My family is diff erent from most. This is mostly because 

of my crazy father. Most dads like to play 

golf or watch football; mine would rather wash and 

detail one of his classic cars. My dad’s hobby — excuse 

me, obsession — is cars. Actually, it’s really anything 

that has a motor. We have 12 cars (nine of them being 

classic), three tractors/ lawn mowers, one dirt bike, 

two motorcycles and two four-wheelers. I am sure you 

are thinking, “Oh, there must be a lot of people in your 

family.” Wrong. It is me, my little brother and my dad. 

My dad is the only one who can drive in my family! You 

know your dad is obsessed with cars when every April 

13th he reminds you to go wish his ’79 Dodge Power 

Wagon (his fi rst vehicle he bought new) a happy birthday. 

I refuse. Did I mention that the car I road home 

from the hospital in when I was born was a 1970 AAR 

’Cuda. My mom was awfully scared to put her little 

baby into something so powerful. 

Sometimes I think over and over about how big of a 

nut my dad is, but I don’t know what our family would 

be like without our cars. Each of the classic cars has 

a story to go along with it. It might sound like I am 

complaining about my dad having these cars, but if 

my dad sold them, I would be very upset. This is not 

a midlife crisis thing where my dad bought a bunch 

of cars; he has worked throughout his whole life for 

them. Ever since he was a kid, he has loved cars. His 

fi rst car was a 1969 Road Runner that he worked for 

and paid for all by himself. In high school, he would go 

to a dead-end street nearby and have burnout competitions 

with his buddies. My dad claims he always won. 

My dad and mom were high school sweethearts. 

After they got out of school, they went to a junkyard 

one day and found a 1974 Dart Sport. My dad told my 

mom he would restore it for her, and my dad knew 

mom was a keeper when she said, “No you won’t, I 

will help you”. My mom and dad spent the next two 

years restoring the car. It looked like new when they 

were all done. Unfortunately, this part does not have 

such a happy ending. In 2005 a guy ran a stop sign and 

crashed into the driver’s side of my mom’s car. She was 

in the very car she and my dad restored. My mom did 

not recover from the accident. This was a very tragic 

moment in my family’s life. 

A few years later, my dad found a 1967 Dart convertible 

out in California. He bought it. It was not in

the greatest shape, but my dad bought it like that on 

purpose. His plan was to give me the car, but we could 

restore it together fi rst, in memory of my mom. I was 

all for it. We are still restoring it now. It is being sent 

out to get paint this fall, right before I get my license. 

I told my dad I was going to do some burnouts in the 

school parking lot. He laughed. It was funny, because 

I was not kidding. 

Practically my dad’s whole life and my whole life, 

our family gets very excited for one trip we take every 

year. This is our trip to Carlisle, PA, for the Carlisle 

All Chrysler Nationals in July. We go every year. Most 

teenage girls would never step foot in there, but I get 

so excited every year for it. My favorite part was seeing 

Miss Carlisle. I got my picture with her every year. I told 

my mom I will be Miss Carlisle when I am old enough. I 

am not sure if I will fulfi ll my childhood dream, but we 

will see! My dad would bring down one or two of his 

cars every year, and would always place very well. In 

2002, we even had our best show car, our 1972 Dodge 

Charger in the Invitational Building. It was really cool. 

In 2003 we also had the Charger along with our 1973 

’Cuda in the Show Field. They both placed fi rst. 

Our trip to Carlisle was also a time to see very close 

friends of ours who we only get to see once a year. 

When we come down, after the show it was so nice just 

to take the back roads of Carlisle to our hotel. Pennsylvania 

is beautiful, and my dad and I really like this 

area. We love it so much, we moved here! We moved 

to Carlisle from Buff alo, NY, in 2008. I was not so happy 

at fi rst; just because it was hard to leave a place I lived 

my whole life. Now I think moving was the best thing 

that’s ever happened to me. I love this area, and it is 

very convenient to live only eight miles away from the 

Carlisle Fairgrounds, my dad’s home away from home. 

Some people will always know him as the “Crazy Car 

Guy,” but I know my dad takes pride in his cars. He restores 

classic cars for himself and other people, along 

with a car dealership, so luckily he knows what to do 

exactly if something needs fi xed. It’s also very handy 

for me that I will never have to pay for a mechanic! All 

in all, I am kind of attached to my dad’s obsession.

It all began when Roosevelt 

promised Churchill wartime 

equipment under the Lend Lease 

program in 1941. The United States 

transported tanks, planes, cars, 

and trucks to England by ship. 

In order to navigate through 

Nazi U-Boats, the American ships 

had to zig-zag back and forth, 

adding weeks to the voyage. Since 

England had limited supplies of 

fuel, Uncle Sam shipped the 

equipment with full tanks. 

During the journey, the carburetors 

were gummed up by vapors. The US 

enlisted the help of PENRECO in 

Western Pennsylvania, who provided 

a solvent to remove the vapor 

varnish from the equipment. The 

solvent was called Gumout, and 

it did exactly that.
