Community Spotlight Laura Kremer Kline ‘97 Sophomore Mary-Kate Smith Congratulations to sophomore Mary-Kate Smith who has been selected to represent Assumption as our Hugh O’Brien Youth Leadership representative this June at the HOBY Leadership seminar. Mary-Kate was selected for her strong history of service and leadership and her leadership potential. Seniors Morgan Wilson and Sammi Smith have been named as finalists in the 2010 competition for National Merit Scholarships. All finalists will be considered for National Merit Scholarships to be offered in 2010. Congratulations Morgan and Sammi! We are all very proud of you! Congratulations to the Assumption Math League on their third place showing after the second test! Individually, the Rockets have many students in the top ten: senior Sarah Edwards, seventh place; juniors Caroline Gerstle, fifth place, and Emily Steltenpohl, sixth place; sophomores Xiao Hu, first place, Tricia Dunlevy, second place, and Mary- Kate Smith, sixth place; and freshmen Paige Harpring, eighth place, and Melanie Bayens, ninth place. Keep up the great work, ladies! Congratulations to senior Marie Clements who has been awarded the Morehead-Cain Scholarship. This scholarship provides a full, four-year scholarship to the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and includes an annual stipend that covers all expenses, a laptop, a fully funded, four year summer Senior Marie Clements enrichment program, and discovery grants to be used for educational opportunities. Students must be nominated and go through a lengthy and competitive application process. Less than 4% of the applicants were selected. Congratulations, Marie!
Alumnae Class Updates Senior Kirsten Anderson’s Silver Key painting The bell choir performs under the direction of Steven Straub. The Handbell Choir was recorded as part of the WAVE 3 community holiday program. The traditional “Sounds of the Season” program ran in two different half-hour versions and Assumption taped two songs, one song in each program. Assumption High School senior Sammi Smith has been awarded the J. Ollie Edmunds Distinguished Scholarship by Stetson University. This nationally competitive merit-based college Senior Sammi Smith scholarship program provides a full, four-year award to top student scholars with leadership potential. Congratulations to juniors Michelle Gasior and Carolyn Stewart for being selected to the All-Region swim team! Nine Assumption students recently received awards in the 2009 Scholastic Art Regional Competition. Students receiving awards include senior Kirsten Anderson, Silver Key in painting; senior Anna Beilman, Honorable Mention in painting; senior Samantha Coleman, Silver Key in painting; senior Audrey Ernstberger, Gold and Silver Keys in drawing; senior Beth Heustis, Gold Key in sculpture; senior Molly Parsch, Honorable Mention in ceramics and glass; senior Krissy Raque, Silver Key in drawing; senior Elizabeth Thompson, Gold Key in sculpture, Silver Key in drawing, and Honorable Mention in drawing; and senior Laurie White, three Honorable Mentions in painting and one Honorable Mention in mixed media. These students’ artwork competed against hundreds of pieces from schools across the region. They were honored at an awards ceremony in February. Senior Katie Gorman Congratulations to senior Katie Gorman who placed in the top 20th percentile of students nationwide on the National Financial Capability Challenge. There were over 76,000 participants. Congratulations to the Science Olympiad team for a successful state competition. Special congratulations to senior Marie Clements and junior Stefanie Muller who won first prize at the state level in Disease Detectives. Marie also won third prize along with senior Rachel Gregor in Environmental Chemistry. Way to go, Rocket scientists! Congratulations to the Advanced Choir who received a perfect score at the KMEA District Choral Festival in March. They advanced to the state level in May. 1998 Class Ambassadors: Jenny Hilsenrad Graff, Jenny Weber Shulhafer, Nancy Beckham Vann Melanie Hampton West and her husband, Mark, proudly announce the birth of their daughter, Isabella Claire, on December 14, 2009. She weighed 7 pounds, 7 ounces, and was 20 inches long. 2000 Class Ambassadors: Jenni Benningfield, Catie Knabel Leslie Andrew Michael Dunteman Kyle and Grant Ethridge Tessa Morrow Dunteman and her husband, David, are pleased to announce the birth of their first son, Andrew Michael. Drew was born on October 28, 2009 and weighed 8 pounds, 13 ounces, and was 21½ inches long. Kyle Sawyer-Dailey Ethridge was married on Saturday, September 18, 2009, to Grant Ethridge. They had a beautiful wedding at the Caldwell Chapel and reception at Mellwood Arts Center. They live in Germantown with their 2 dogs and 2 cats! Taylor Tipton Kersery and her husband have started their own company where they create silicone emergency contact bracelets for children and adults. They have more than 30 designs to put on the bracelets that kids will love! You can check them out at www. icoebracelets.com. Congratulations to junior Emily Steltenpohl, sophomore Xiao Hu, and sophomore Tricia Dunlevy on their excellent scores on the Mu Alpha Theta National Log 1 Test! Emily placed ninth and Xiao placed 24th in the Alpha division of Region 4. Tricia placed eighth in the Theta division of Region 4. Great job, girls! Congratulations to freshman Jennie Richardson who played the role of Claudia Herdman in the Stage One production of The Best Christmas Pageant Ever. AHS music teacher Jackie Metry and Kentuckiana Kid’s Foundation co-founder and owner of Brownsboro Hardware, Jim Lehrer. Assumption High School’s Music Department received a $3,000 grant from the Kentuckiana Kids Foundation to purchase 20 guitars.
