CORNER
Compassion was the foundation upon
which Catherine McAuley built her life.
Her father’s legacy of compassion for
the impoverished was a deep inspiration
to Catherine to use the fortune that she
inherited from friends to open a home
where women and children without
resources could find shelter and learn how
to become self-sufficient. Her compassion
inspired other women, who joined to
become the Sisters of Mercy. Without that
compassion, ultimately, Assumption High
School, which has lovingly been led by the
Sisters of Mercy for the last 55 years, would
not be in existence to inspire over 8,000
alumnae and over 900 young women
today.
A walk through Assumption’s halls
makes clear that a sense of compassion
continues to inspire this community.
Donation boxes, advertisements for benefit
concerts, and simple acts of kindness when
books are dropped or someone takes the
inevitable “trip up the stairs” make it clear
that a healthy sense of compassion inspires

the daily activities of Assumption girls. A
few minutes spent with this magazine
make it equally as evident that the sense of
compassion learned within this community
continues to inspire and have an impact far
outside of these walls.
As you peruse this spring edition of
the magazine we believe that you will
find a plethora of information that will
motivate you to continue to strive to make
a difference. We invite you to spend
some time getting to know the seven
women who were recently inducted into
Assumption’s Hall of Fame. Reading
about their efforts and attitude make it
difficult to not want to get out of your
chair and get involved. We hope that you
will take the time to read the story of a
recent Assumption graduate whose sense
of compassion for others gave a stranger
a new chance at life. You will even find
a challenge to reflect on a custom that is

becoming common among parents of
teenagers and to decide whether it is a
compassionate choice or not.
Sprinkled among these larger articles
you will also find the everyday stories of
how our current students, parents, faculty,
staff, and alumnae are living out their
inspirations in big and small ways close to
home and around the world.
Spring is a time to be inspired, and we
hope that these stories will be refreshing
for you and a reminder of the good things
that are happening within your community
of Assumption. We hope that you will
continue to share with us the ways that you
have been inspired in your life because
those stories inspire us. Please send us

how you have shared and been offered

Alicia Morrow Johnson `96, Alumnae Association President
As this school year comes to a close, the Alumnae Association
would like to congratulate and welcome our newest Alumnae
Association members! I am happy to take this opportunity to tell
all of you, as well as our current alumnae, about all the progress
the association board is making.
We have begun forming our committees and are actively planning for the future.
The four committees of the Alumnae Board are the following:
The Student Outreach committee is
charged with coordinating and implementing
all activities and outreach to
the current AHS student body and is
chaired by Angela Ashley Lange `94
(angela.lange@ahsrockets.org) and
Meredith Gruebbel `00 (mgruebbel@
gmail.com)
The Signature Events committee is
responsible for coordinating all aspects
of the events sponsored by the
Alumnae Association and is chaired
by Bobbie Elbert `99 (bobbieelbert@
southernwine.com).
The Communications committee is
accountable for coordinating and
implementing all communication
outreach to Alumnae in regards to
activities of the association and is
chaired by Karen Meyer Thompson `95
(kthompson@oldkyins.com)
The Fiscal Policy committee will
be responsible for developing and
monitoring the association’s budget
while establishing fiscal policies and
is chaired by Alicia Morrow Johnson
`96 (aliciagc3@hotmail.com).
Please mark your calendar for the
Second Annual Alumnae Father Daughter
Dance! If you missed the first one, you
won’t want to miss it again. The dance
will be held in the gym at Assumption on
Saturday, December 4, 2010. This event
is one of our signature Alumnae events
and truly is a fantastic time. To learn
