We are happy that CII has set up the 

“CII Institute of Logistics, a Centre 

of Excellence on Logistics and Supply 

Chain Management” (CII-IL) and 

happy to present our 1st Annual 

Report This Institute was fully 

functional from the year 2004 and 

it’s main objective was to meet the 

latent need of the CII membership 

and industry for specialized services 

in Logistics and Supply Chain 

Management. 

In today’s competitive environment, 

Companies that are keen to be 

globally competitive have to excel 

in all functions of management in 

order to achieve Organisational 

Excellence. There is an unparalleled 

pressure on the Industry to make 

things cheaper, better and faster at 

different locations . The Supply 

Chain has thus become a critical 

component to gain competitive 

advantage with growing 

complexities with a need to manage 

both the (back end) Suppliers and 

the (front end) Customers. 

The Institute focusses on this area, 

operating out of Chennai, but will 

be present throughout the country.

evolution, competitive forces, asset 

build and customer expectations. 

The study would have cross section 

retail, agriculture, metals and

proposed research streams are under 

consideration by leading corporate 

bodies in the country and it is 

expected that two of the research 

streams would be initiated in 2005. 

The structure would be a team of 

five dedicated researchers. The team 

would focus on the vertical aspects 

relating to supply chain and 

research, and involve both empirical 

and model building.

users and the shipping trade on 30 

March 2005. The session brought 

together user industries and 

chambers of commerce representing 

them as well as various trade 

associations in the shipping 

industry representing services like 

freight forwarders, steamer agents 

and custom house agents. 

The Session had an overwhelming 

response from the industry. More 

than 150 participants from various 

sectors and industry and industry 

associations and raised issues

constraints and requirements to
