Ayruvedia means knowledge of life and it is said to be “a
science of life that deals with the problems of longevity,
and suggests a safe, gentle, and effective way to rid
diseases afflicting our health” (Swami Sada Shiva Tirtha,
The Ayurveda Encyclopedia, 2006, p. xix).
It claims to have been handed down from Brahma to
other gods and obtained through meditation by an ancient
Hindu sage named Bharadvaja and then passed along to
other gurus (p. xxiii).
“It is said that they received their training of
Ayurveda through direct cognition during meditation.
That is, the knowledge of the use of the various
methods of healing, prevention, longevity, and
surgery came through Divine revelation” (Ayurveda
Encyclopedia, p. 3).
It is one of the Hindu Vedic religious systems and is
intimately associated with yoga. It was once a part of
Jyotish veda, which refers to astrology. Jyoti means light.
It is based on the concept that all existence is part of God
and man is divine and can achieve union with God
through meditation and other practices. The objective of
Ayurveda is to bring man into a divine wholeness in all
areas of his life, physical, life purpose, relationships, and
spirituality.
