It is not merely a dietary plan, though. Its “core teaching”<br />

is “that God, nature, the Universe and all aspects <strong>of</strong><br />

“Briefly put, it’s an idiosyncratic version <strong>of</strong> the<br />

ancient concept <strong>of</strong> yin and yang. According to<br />

oriental philosophy yin and yang are opposing yet<br />

complimentary forces which are presumed to exist<br />

throughout all elements <strong>of</strong> the universe. It’s<br />

necessary to maintain a balance and harmony<br />

between yin and yang ... Everything is assigned yin<br />

and yang qualities. In dietary counseling and<br />

practice, these designations are used to explain how<br />

a supposed imbalance in the diet results in a health<br />

disorder. The imbalance isn’t explained nutritionally,<br />

For example, the macrobiotic diet typically avoids<br />

tomatoes, eggplant, peppers, potatoes, spinich, beets,<br />

avacodos, sugar, c<strong>of</strong>fee, honey, chocolate, commercial<br />

milk, cheese, hot spices, fruit, cream, yogurt -- because<br />

these are allegedly “extreme yin.” On the other hand,<br />

poultry, meat, eggs, and other things are avoided because<br />

they are “extreme yang.”<br />

In the Old Testament, God’s people freely ate fruit, milk,<br />

and honey (Numbers 13:23-27), caring not a whit about<br />

their supposed “yin” qualities. God Himself described<br />
