problems and mentoring programs; external examiner for four PhD<br />

adaptation, welfare participation, voluntary agency support and<br />

mutual support organizations among the refugees.<br />

1977-1982 Assistant Pr<strong>of</strong>essor, The Madras <strong>School</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Social</strong> <strong>Work</strong>, India.<br />

Taught courses in community development, juvenile delinquency<br />

and correctional administration, social legislation and history and<br />

philosophy <strong>of</strong> social work in India; provided practicum supervision<br />

to graduate students in community settings, welfare and<br />

correctional agencies; supervised student research projects;<br />

organized two in-service training programs for police and<br />

correctional personnel.<br />

1980 Filed a class-action suit against the Government <strong>of</strong> Tamil Nadu<br />

state in the Supreme Court <strong>of</strong> India preventing the forcible eviction<br />

<strong>of</strong> pavement-dwellers in Madras, India. The Supreme Court<br />

eventually ruled that the state government could not evacuate the<br />

residents without providing alternate accommodation.<br />

1975-1977 Community Organizer, Mukka Welfare Society, Mukka, India.<br />

Organized the untouchables in order to secure government welfare<br />

programs such as sites and services, housing, loans, debt relief,<br />

abolition <strong>of</strong> bonded labor; organized agricultural tenants and<br />

landless laborers to create an awareness <strong>of</strong> land reform legislation<br />

and to deal with bureaucratic procedures <strong>of</strong> land assignment;<br />

conducted a socioeconomic survey <strong>of</strong> condition <strong>of</strong> a village;<br />

engaged in organizing cooperative society for small farmers;<br />

organized a basket makers’ cooperative for the untouchable tribe <strong>of</strong><br />

the Koragas in Mukka.<br />
