India and China. We hope that you will learn and take useful knowledge
back to your organisation that will help you successfully manage your
supply chains in an increasingly uncertain and volatile world.
As always, let me or one of the other staff members know if
there’s anything that we can do to improve your experience at the
conference. We’re also happy to answer any questions you have
about the work of Supply Chain Council or the application of the
Supply Chain Operations Reference (SCOR ® ) model.
About SCC
Supply Chain Council (SCC, supply-chain.org) is a global nonprofit
organisation whose methodology, diagnostic, and benchmarking tools
help member organisations make dramatic and rapid improvements
in supply chain processes. SCC has established the supply chain
world’s most widely accepted framework for evaluating and comparing supply chain activities and
their performance. The framework—the Supply Chain Operations Reference (SCOR ® ) model—helps
organisations quickly determine and compare the performance of supply chain and related operations
within their company or against other organisations.

Globalisation, competitive business environment, and technology have been the driving forces in
pushing supply chain to what it is today. It is becoming more complex, complicated, and confusing to
many practitioners as well as decision makers. Businesses do not lack application solutions that can
help them in managing the supply chain, but what is clearly lacking is the ability to visualise and act on
actionable insights that lead to smarter decisions resulting in better outcomes. Smarter manufacturing
framework and business analytics will transform your supply chain into an efficient & effective model
in sourcing of raw materials, components, and delivering the final products to your customers timely,
thereby generating value to your customers.
Infineon
Infineon’s highly integrated and automated supply chain planning environment combines perfectly IT
solutions of different software producers with a blended mix of best of breed software to support its
SCOR-based process landscape. One essential for a profitable supply chain is to improve planning via
collaboration. Results are monitored using a forecast accuracy measurement, which enables a deep
analysis to identify and solve root causes for under- and overforecasting. Here not only the accuracy of
the forecast of the customer demand is of interest, but also the accuracy of internal planning and forecast
processes as well as the one of forecasts given to production partners—end to end. To focus on the last
point Infineon’s Semiconductor Supply Chain Science Center Singapore is developing improvements based
on scientific research especially for the production partner related supply chain processes.
Colin Seftel,
Director
SAPICS
In his presentation Colin will reflect on practices that did and didn’t work while employed for 20
years as an operations manager of a successful engineer-to-order job shop in South Africa. He will
include a focus on the initial ERP implementation and how it was continuously improved though the
adoption of lean principles, concurrent engineering, and other techniques. He concludes that “best
practices” are not always best for every organisation. Attendees will have the chance to debate the
usefulness of applying best practices to an array of topics such as manufacturing planning and control,
supplier relations, enterprise resources planning implementation, software development, concurrent
engineering, and continuous improvement.
Emerging countries have fared better than advanced economies overall during the global economic
recession and will continue to outperform the advanced economies in the coming decade. The APAC
region alone will contribute almost 45% of the total global growth between 2006-2020. While the
region offers high growth trajectory, it also poses multiple challenges to supply chain operations—
starting from amateur logistics, fragmented retail markets, vastly diverse geography and consumer
profiles, inadequate infrastructure, differential tax regimes and local regulations, FDI restrictions, etc.
These topics will be discussed.
India has emerged as one of the fastest growing automobile markets in the world. Leading automotive players
form Europe, North America, and Asia have established a strong presence in the Indian market. In this
competitive market, seasonality and monthly demand spikes strongly impact automotive sales in India. While
production normally takes place at a consistent rate, variation of sales adversely impacts the operational
efficiency, working capital rotation, and blocked storage space, and creates additional inventory.

Every 60 seconds, Hewlett Packard (HP) ships 5 servers, 100 printers, and 120 personal computing devices
worldwide. To smoothly deliver this scale of volume and diversity requires a supply chain that is massive and
complex, yet one that works in sync across HP’s three major business groups; IPG, PSG, & ESSN.
In 2010 HP began evolving one of the world’s largest supply chains into the world’s best supply chain.
Despite economic uncertainties and shifting business conditions, the world’s largest information
technology company embarked on a journey of self examination to optimise their supply chain from good
to great. This journey uncovered opportunities to leverage their scale and implement creative efficiencies.
The result changed their supply chain from a logistics function into a market differentiating capability.
Brau Union, Austria’s biggest brewery group (Heineken Group), is optimising its warehouse logistics. The
laser-supported technology used by Locanis IntelliGence allows the three-dimensional control of goods,
which reduces the number of empty runs in the warehouse, cuts down CO2 emissions, and allows a more
flexible use of storage space. This addition has significantly improved the warehouse operation. With
the aid of the new online visualisation we can obtain a picture of the filling level of the warehouse at any
time, and know which forklift is carrying out which transport at any given moment. Moreover, necessary
information such as stock levels, batches, or sell-by dates is available at any time, at the touch of a button.
Next Generation
Supply Chain Model
Amit Bhowmik,
Managing Consultant
Tata Consultancy
Services Ltd.
In a conventional supply chain setup, organisations cater to customer’s demand by sourcing raw material
from suppliers, manufacturing products, and finally distributing finished goods through a linear and
open-loop supply chain. In contrast, organisations embracing a closed-loop supply chain, adopt, recycle,
remanufacture, and re-use approaches to cater to customer demand. This emerging practice is gaining
increased acceptance as this not only reduces waste but also drives efficiency of the supply chain.
The “next generation” supply chain that is emerging is an efficient, responsible, collaborative chain that
adopts the closed-loop approach. This presentation attempts to address how organisations can migrate
to “next generation” supply chains by adopting a balanced score card approach to building sustainable
supply chains and thereby achieving long-term business benefits and environment leadership.

William Lee,
IDC Manufacturing Insights
Asia/Pacific
The reality for globally integrated manufacturers is that they have to manage complex products,
supply chains, and sales channels; and success stems from managing that complexity better than
the competition. Companies must learn the difference between complexity and complication in
today’s manufacturing business, to understand the causes for complications and the removal of them.
Complication is not inevitable, and is often a result of poor management, inefficient processes, or
inadequate IT systems.
The session will share trends from the latest IDC Manufacturing Insights survey of Asia/Pacific
manufacturing companies, exploring overall business drivers, key operational trends, and discussing in
detail the trends in supply chain management. We will look into some of the business and technology
opportunities, with guidance on how companies can leverage these opportunities and capitalise on
complexity to create competitive advantage.
Supply chain benchmarking helps provide performance visibility and allows reconfiguration of the supply
chain on time in order to mitigate disruption risk. Benchmarking is also a valuable tool for identifying
inefficiency gaps.
Many supply chain executives rely on benchmarking to understand their positioning in the marketplace
and fine tune their objectives to prepare for the future. John will review two types of supply chain
benchmarking available for companies in South East Asia:
• Global benchmarking (SCORmark) is a service provided by SCC to its members. Through an alliance
with APQC, an organisation specialising in best practices and benchmarking, SCC members can submit
their results and receive benchmarking reports on their status based on the SCOR model metrics. This
is a free service for SCC members.
• Regional benchmarking is a service provided by iCognitive to companies in South East Asia.
iCognitive has for the last 10 years organised the benchmark study annually on behalf of the SCC South
East Asia chapter. They have gathered information about the supply chain performance of more than
300 companies based on SCOR level 1 metrics. This service is also free of charge for members of
