y the East Anatolian left-lateral strike slip fault <strong>and</strong> to the southeast by<br />

the Oman line. The orogen consists <strong>of</strong> three parallel belts (Fig. 2-6): (1) the<br />

Urumieh-Dokhtor Magmatic Assembalage (UDMA), which forms a distinct<br />

linear intrusive-extrusive complex, extends <strong>along</strong> the entire length <strong>of</strong><br />

Zagros orogenic belt, with width <strong>of</strong> over 4 km. The UDMA comprises<br />

various lithologic units including gabbro, diorites, granodiorites <strong>and</strong><br />

granite bodies <strong>of</strong> different size. It also contains widely distributed basaltic<br />

lava flow; (2) Zagros Imbricate Zone (ZIZ), which is a <strong>zone</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>thrust</strong> faults<br />

that have transported numerous slices <strong>of</strong> metamorphoses <strong>and</strong> non<br />

metamorphosed Phanerozoic stratigraphic unit <strong>of</strong> Arabian continental<br />

margin, as well as ophiolites, from the collisional suture <strong>zone</strong> on the<br />

northeast toward interior parts <strong>of</strong> the Arabian craton to the southwest.<br />

The ZIZ comprises both San<strong>and</strong>aj-Sirjan Zone (SSZ) in Iran <strong>and</strong> Iraqi<br />

Zagros Thrust Zone in Iraq; <strong>and</strong> (3) the Zagros fold-<strong>thrust</strong> belt, which<br />

forms the less strained part <strong>of</strong> the orogen, <strong>and</strong> consists <strong>of</strong> a pile <strong>of</strong> folded<br />

<strong>and</strong> faulted <strong>rocks</strong> composed <strong>of</strong> 4 to 7 kilometres <strong>of</strong> mainly Paleozoic <strong>and</strong><br />

Mesozoic successions overlain by 3 to 5 kilometres <strong>of</strong> Cenozoic sliciclastic<br />

<strong>and</strong> carbonate <strong>rocks</strong> resting on highly metamorphosed Proterozoic Pan-<br />

African basement that was affected by the late Neoproterozoic-Cambrian<br />

Najd strike-slip faults (Alavi, 2004).<br />
