Season Outlook<br />

Men’s <strong>Track</strong> & <strong>Field</strong> Hopes to Build on Past Success<br />

The <strong>Kutztown</strong> <strong>University</strong> men’s track &<br />

field team will enter the <strong>2005</strong>-<strong>06</strong> season looking<br />

to build upon its past successes.<br />

The team, which has won six Pennsylvania<br />

State Athletic Conference (PSAC) titles, placed<br />

second at last year’s PSAC Outdoor Championship,<br />

its first top-two finish since winning the<br />

2002 title. The Golden Bears also placed fourth<br />

at the indoor championship.<br />

The Golden Bears return a host of PSAC<br />

Champions and All-PSAC performers in hopes<br />

of challenging for top-three spots at the conference<br />

championship meets again in 20<strong>06</strong>.<br />

Leading the way will be returning individual<br />

conference champions Steve Tyson, Mike<br />

Provenzano, Tony Hegedus and Dan Wilson.<br />

Tyson was a double champion last year,<br />

winning both the indoor and outdoor shot put<br />

crowns. Tyson was an NCAA provisional qualifier,<br />

with a season-best throw of 52-8. Tyson’s<br />

performance earned him the KU Male Rookie of<br />

the Year award.<br />

Provenzano won the pole vault title at the<br />

PSAC outdoor championships, with a seasonbest<br />

vault of 15-8.<br />

KU Women Look to Defend PSAC Titles in 20<strong>06</strong><br />

<strong>Kutztown</strong> <strong>University</strong>’s women’s track &<br />

field team will enter the <strong>2005</strong>-<strong>06</strong> season looking<br />

to defend its unprecedented Pennsylvania<br />

State Athletic Conference (PSAC) indoor and<br />

outdoor championships.<br />

KU won its second-straight indoor championship,<br />

while the team won its first outdoor<br />

title since 2000.<br />

In order to remain at the top, KU will<br />

have to replace nine athletes who scored points<br />

at the championship meets last year. KU does,<br />

however, have several PSAC Champions and<br />

All-PSAC performers back in the fold.<br />

Leading the way are returning champions<br />

Alison Maurer, Laura Kline and Renee<br />

Marchand.<br />

Maurer won the 20-lb. weight throw at<br />

the indoor title with a meet record throw of 55-<br />

4. She went on to compete at the NCAA Championships<br />

in the event. Outdoors, Maurer<br />

earned All-America honors in the hammer, placing<br />

seventh at the NCAA Championships.<br />

Kline and Marchand were double winners<br />

at the outdoor conference meet. Kline won the<br />

400-meter hurdles, while Marchand won the<br />

Hegedus was second in the 400-meter dash<br />

at the indoor championship. He ran a leg of the<br />

title-winning 4x400 relay. Hegedus also earned<br />

All-PSAC honors outdoors in the 400 hurdles<br />

and 4x400 relay.<br />

Wilson rounds out the returning champions.<br />

He won the javelin in <strong>2005</strong> with an NCAA<br />

provisional qualifying distance of 209-1.<br />

In addition to Hegedus, Billy Boorse and<br />

Steve Hixson also return from the PSAC Champion<br />

indoor 4x400 relay. Hixson was a member<br />

of the 4x400 relay outdoors which earned allconference<br />

honors as well. Matt Carroll will<br />

look to return to the medal stand after running<br />

legs of both PSAC champion 4x400 relay teams<br />

in 2003.<br />

Justin Reichardt finished his rookie season<br />

strong, earning All-PSAC honors in the decathlon.<br />

Steve Winters has also scored in the<br />

decathlon in his career.<br />

Vonkurt Redley was fourth in the 110<br />

hurdles.<br />

Pat Bone, Dave Tidey and Dan Wilde will<br />

lead the distance corps in one of the premier<br />

distance conferences in the country.<br />

heptathlon. The duo ran the final two legs of<br />

the victorious 4x400 relay team.<br />

Jaci Pfeiffer and Talia McKinney return<br />

in the hurdles and relays. Pfeiffer was a<br />

three-time point scorer last year, including an<br />

All-PSAC performance in the indoor 4x400 relay.<br />

She placed in both the 100 and 400 hurdles<br />

outdoors. McKinney scored in the outdoor<br />

400 hurdles, and helped the indoor distance<br />

medley relay to the medal stand.<br />

Molly Lare, Stephanie Williams,<br />

Chelsea Thomas and Desiree Bower are returning<br />

point scorers in the distance events.<br />

Lare placed in the 3,000 and 5,000 outdoors,<br />

while Williams was an All-PSAC performer in<br />

the 10K. Thomas is the lone returner from the<br />

PSAC Champion indoor 4x800 relay, while<br />

Bower finished third in the steeplechase.<br />

Christine Procopio and Amy Schaeffer<br />

head the returning jumpers. Procopio scored<br />

indoors in the triple jump. She also scored in<br />

the 20-lb. weight throw. Michelle Hughes<br />

also returns in the throws.<br />

Laura Deller will look to contribute in<br />

the sprints and jumps.
