The "Glorious Fourth" - continued.
After Dinner, Toasts, &c.
After dinner the audience re-convened at the stand, when the President of the Day, Gen.
Busey, introduced Hon. D. S. Parker, who had prepared a series of thirteen Toasts
suitable to the occasion, which were offered in their order and responded to by gentlemen
present, - General Busey, Hon. A. W. Mack, Rev. F. W. Beecher, Rev. James H. Moore,
Judge Chas. R. Starr,Ex-Mayor Swannell, Captains Chiniquy and Seguin, W. H. Bristol,
James McGrew, S. R. Moore, W. S. Decker and others, being of the number. The Toasts
were excellent and appropriate in character - and were responded to in a spirited
and happy manner. We regret that our columns are too much crowded to admit the Toasts
as we at first intended, and must content ourselves with this brief mention of them.
Remarks
At a late hour the conclusion of the Toasts and responses came, and the audience was
dismissed, with three cheers for the "Day we celebrate". Taken all in all Kankakee
never witnessed so grand a celebration. It is estimated that from 12,000 to 15,000
people came to the city, and all passed off without accident of any kind, and everybody
was pleased with the "ways things were done," and none more so than the brave soldiers
of the 76th, who were guests of the city. See resolution passed at a meeting of the
members of the regiment in Durham's Hall, on the evening of the 4th.
Of the other amusements and attractions of the day, we have not time and space to
speak, except that in the evening the fireworks were splendid, and were kept up until
the grander fireworks and artillery of heaven took precedence, and a heavy rain,
setting in, put a stop to anything further on the part of the citizens. This was much
regretted, but it could not be helped.
In conclusion, the thanks of the community are due to the Committee of Arrangements
for the admirable manner in which they carried out their plans for the celebration,
and to one and all for their interest and liberality at all times shown. May we have
many such occasions hereafter.
