WAKE UP! KANKAKEEANS!! Taken from The <strong>Kankakee</strong> Gazette, November 9, 1871 All citizens who feel an interest in the prosperity of our city and county are requested to meet in Swannell's Hall, Friday evening, Nov. 10, at 7 o'clock, to concert measures to induce manufacturers to locate here. The following measure is proposed: To publish a circular setting forth the advantages here; abundant water-power, building stone, and building lots. Very soon we shall have two cross railroads in operation, giving us a ready communication in every direction with all parts of the country, with the advantage of competing rates; coal abundant in the west part of our county, and on the Vermillion, a little further west; hardwood timber from Indiana and Ohio, and pine from Michigan, cheaper than at Chicago; abundance of good iron ore in Indiana, which can be brought and manufactured here. Will not owners of vacant lots give building lots to the manufacturers, that were burnt out in Chicago, if they will build here? Cannot money be made by thus giving away lots? The east and west railroad through Gilman runs half a mile south of the old court house site in Middleport. The owner of the land there supposed the depot must necessarily be built there, and hence he asked an exorbitant price. The owner of the land on which Watseka is built, offered to give land for the depot buildings. His offer was accepted, and he became rich by selling the balance of his farm in town lots. Some years ago Mr. Enos offered to give good building grounds to a woolen manufactory. Would he not do the same now? Could he not make money by it? Now is the time. "Strike while the iron is hot". Send the proposed circulars to the Chicago manufacturers who were burnt out, and to Eastern captalists. So favorable an opportunity will not soon occur again. Every intelligent citizen knows that the only chance for the growth of our city depends on manufactures. St. Louis and other cities are moving in the way here recommended.
