THE "GLORIOUS' FOURTH" IN KANKAKEE!
From the Kankakee Gazette, July 9, 1868
The morning of the Fourth broke calm and clear, greeted by a • National salute of Thirteen guns
at sunrise. At an early hour the people began to stream into town from every direction, and
by 9 o'clock the streets were crowded by eager and patriotic multitudes. All was stir and
commotion. The boom of cannon, the rattle and roar of crackers, pistols, guns and everything
that would burn gun powder and "celebrate", to which many be super-added the shouts and huzzas
of thousands, were the greetings which heralded in the 92nd Anniversary of our National
Independence. The weather was exceedingly hot and oppressive, the mercury running up to 105
degrees in the shade, and 120 degrees in the sun. It was indeed a sweltering day, the earth
burning like a furnace, and yet the people were "bound to celebrate", as on many a "glorious
Fourth" before.
The Procession
Owing to the great heat the line of march, as indicated by the Programme of the Day, was
materially abbreviated, and all for the better. The procession was formed on Court Street,
frontingtheCourtHousesquare,underthedirectionofChiefMarshalTodd,assistedbyanactive
and efficient corps of Aides. Precisely at 10:30 a.m., the procession began to move, headed by
the Grove City Silver Cornet Band, followed by the mammoth band wagon containing the singers,
then the carriage with the Clergy of the city, then the Committee of Reception, etc. The line
of march was down Court street to West avenue, down West avenue to Hickory street, thence east
on Hickory street to East avenue, thence north on East avenue to Depot, where the procession
halted and awaited the arrival of the Onarga and Champaign delegation of members of the 76th
Regt., under the lead of Gen. S. T. Busey. At 11 o'clock the train arrived, consisting of four
coaches well crowded with guests. The committee of Reception met the General and his little
army on the platform, when he and the orator of the day, Hon. Franklin Blades, were conducted
to carriages in waiting, the procession was "filled in" and fully completed, with the Onarga
and Watseka Brass Bands assigned prominent positions, and the Kankakee Cornet Band and Grove
City Silver Cornet Bank in the lead, - the line of march was again taken up, passing along East
avenue to Court street, up Court street to Indiana avenue, thence south on Indiana avenue to
Bourbonnais street, and thence to the beautiful grove which our respected and public spirited
townsman, Emory Cobb, Esq., voluntarily tendered to the Committee of Arrangements for their
use on the occasion, which the Committee had gladly availed themselves of, and made thorough
and ample provision for a vast multitude, as to seats, platforms, and other welcome accommodations.
All was well done in this respect, and the Committee justly entitled themselves to
thethanksofthepublicfortheirremarkablecare,andforethought in this important matter.
On The Grounds
Arrivedonthegrounds,thevastassemblageofpeoplewereprovidedwithseats.Thelargeplatform
was filled with soldier guests, the choirs and bands, and those who were assigned parts in the
exercises of the day. The several bands were called upon for music, which they from time to
time discoursed in an admirable manner, and to the pleasure of all.
-8-
The "Glorious Fourth" continued.
All being arranged and disposed of in due order, the exercises commenced. At 11:45
a.m. the Committee of Reception, consisting of Mayor T. P. Bonfield, Ex-Mayor Wm.
G. Swannell and W. H. Bristol, arose upon the platform and appeared before the
audience, Gen. Busey, President of the Day, also rising, when Mayor Bonfield
addressed him in a Reception speech of several minutes' duration, welcoming the
General and the soldier guests of the 76th, in most warm and patriotic words, and
in terms well adapted to the time and occasion. His neat and appropriate speech
met with a hearty response from all.
Gen. Busey replied in a touching and eloquent address of about ten minutes' length,
tenderly alluding to the regiment (76th) late under his command, its hardships and
trials in camp and on the battlefield; but when he "lovingly" spoke of the dead",
tears started from many an eye, and though "few and brief were the words he said,"
yet they went home to the heart, and were warmly appreciated by all that immense
concourse of people.
At the conclusion of Gen. Busey's address, he announced, as first in order, a prayer
by the Rev. J. M. Whitehead - the Chaplain of the Day, Rev. J. B. Dille being absent.
The Kankakee Musical Union now sang "Rally 'round the Flag, Boys," which was performed
in a most spirited and soul-stirring manner, and elicited great applause. Then followed
the singing of the "Marsellaise Hymn," by the French Choir of this city, which was
admirably executed, and met with deserved applause. The Declaration of Independence
was now read by Wm. G. Swannell, Esq. in an able and spirited manner, and reflected
much credit on that gentleman's good taste and appreciation of the substance and
essential meaning of that grand "document of rights".
The Onarga Band now played a suitable piece, followed by the singing of our National
Anthem - "America" - by the Kankakee Musical Union, assisted by the entire audience.
It sounded grandly, and was received with cheers. After which, the Watseka Band
discoursed one of their best pieces, in their usual fine style.
Oration
The oration by Hon. Franklin Blades, of Watseka, Iroquois County, Illinois, came
next in order, and was one of the most able and eloquent productions of the kind
we have ever listened to. It was repeatedly applauded, and did that gentlemen great
credit. As we hope to be able to procure it for publication in these columns, we
defer further notice at present.
At the close of the oration, the Kankakee Musical Union sang in beautiful style the
patriotic song - "A Shout for Columbia," which was highly praised. Then the
Kankakee Cornet Band discoursed an excellent selection, and the French Choir sang
a stirring piece, entitled "The Song of the Zouave". This choir is one of the best
in the city, and its services on this occasion will be long remembered.
Dinner
The long expected dinner hour now came, it being about 2 o'clock. Refreshments of
all kinds, and in great abundance, were provided in various ways, and the " multitude"
were led. None went away without a "good square meal."
-9-
The "Glorious Fourth" - continued.
After Dinner, Toasts, &c.
After dinner the audience re-convened at the stand, when the President of the Day, Gen.
Busey, introduced Hon. D. S. Parker, who had prepared a series of thirteen Toasts
suitable to the occasion, which were offered in their order and responded to by gentlemen
present, - General Busey, Hon. A. W. Mack, Rev. F. W. Beecher, Rev. James H. Moore,
Judge Chas. R. Starr,Ex-Mayor Swannell, Captains Chiniquy and Seguin, W. H. Bristol,
James McGrew, S. R. Moore, W. S. Decker and others, being of the number. The Toasts
were excellent and appropriate in character - and were responded to in a spirited
and happy manner. We regret that our columns are too much crowded to admit the Toasts
as we at first intended, and must content ourselves with this brief mention of them.
Remarks
At a late hour the conclusion of the Toasts and responses came, and the audience was
dismissed, with three cheers for the "Day we celebrate". Taken all in all Kankakee
never witnessed so grand a celebration. It is estimated that from 12,000 to 15,000
people came to the city, and all passed off without accident of any kind, and everybody
was pleased with the "ways things were done," and none more so than the brave soldiers
of the 76th, who were guests of the city. See resolution passed at a meeting of the
members of the regiment in Durham's Hall, on the evening of the 4th.
Of the other amusements and attractions of the day, we have not time and space to
speak, except that in the evening the fireworks were splendid, and were kept up until
the grander fireworks and artillery of heaven took precedence, and a heavy rain,
setting in, put a stop to anything further on the part of the citizens. This was much
regretted, but it could not be helped.
In conclusion, the thanks of the community are due to the Committee of Arrangements
for the admirable manner in which they carried out their plans for the celebration,
and to one and all for their interest and liberality at all times shown. May we have
many such occasions hereafter.
WAKE UP! KANKAKEEANS!!
Taken from The Kankakee Gazette, November 9, 1871
All citizens who feel an interest in the prosperity of our city and county
are requested to meet in Swannell's Hall, Friday evening, Nov. 10, at 7 o'clock, to
concert measures to induce manufacturers to locate here. The following measure is
proposed:
To publish a circular setting forth the advantages here; abundant water-power, building
stone, and building lots. Very soon we shall have two cross railroads in operation,
giving us a ready communication in every direction with all parts of the country, with
the advantage of competing rates; coal abundant in the west part of our county, and
on the Vermillion, a little further west; hardwood timber from Indiana and Ohio, and
pine from Michigan, cheaper than at Chicago; abundance of good iron ore in Indiana,
which can be brought and manufactured here.
Will not owners of vacant lots give building lots to the manufacturers, that were
burnt out in Chicago, if they will build here? Cannot money be made by thus giving
away lots?
The east and west railroad through Gilman runs half a mile south of the old court house
site in Middleport. The owner of the land there supposed the depot must necessarily
be built there, and hence he asked an exorbitant price. The owner of the land on which
Watseka is built, offered to give land for the depot buildings. His offer was accepted,
and he became rich by selling the balance of his farm in town lots.
Some years ago Mr. Enos offered to give good building grounds to a woolen manufactory.
Would he not do the same now? Could he not make money by it?
Now is the time. "Strike while the iron is hot". Send the proposed circulars to the
Chicago manufacturers who were burnt out, and to Eastern captalists. So favorable
an opportunity will not soon occur again. Every intelligent citizen knows that the
only chance for the growth of our city depends on manufactures. St. Louis and other
cities are moving in the way here recommended. Shall we be so unwise as to let the
present opportunity pass unimproved, and let others reap all the advantages of the
present time? Come one! come all!
