It is time to introduce our directors and<br />

staff. This issue we are featuring the officers<br />

and executive secretary.<br />

William F. O’Brien just took over the<br />

reigns as president. Bill has been a director<br />

since the inception of the KWVNM&L. Bill<br />

has also served as 1st and 2nd vice-president.<br />

He served in the U.S. Army from June 25,<br />

1951 until June 9, 1953. After basic training,<br />

he was assigned to the 274th Armored Field<br />

Artillery at Ladd Air Force Base in<br />

Fairbanks, Alaska. He served as a radio operator,<br />

battery mail clerk, information and education<br />

NCO and athletic and recreation<br />

NCO. After leaving the service Bill was a<br />

self-employed salesman of fire fighting<br />

equipment throughout the state of Illinois.<br />

Bill belongs to the KWVA Greater Chicago<br />

Chapter in Chicago, IL, where he served as<br />

secretary for six years. Bill and his wife<br />

Adele live in Homewood, IL.<br />

Merle Sims is currently the 2nd Vice-<br />

President. Merle has been involved with the<br />

KWVNM&L since the beginning. He was<br />

also the first treasurer of the Board of<br />

Directors. Merle joined the U.S. Marine<br />

Corps in 1953 and was discharged in 1956.<br />

He went to boot camp in San Diego and<br />

advanced infantry training at Camp<br />

Pendleton, CA. He also took cold weather<br />

training at Pickle Meadows, CA. He was<br />

shipped to Japan to join the 3rd Marine<br />

Division in March of 1954. He was then<br />

transferred to Korea in 1955. Merle returned<br />

home to work at Caterpillar Tractor Co. from<br />

which he retired after 32 1/2 years. He<br />

belongs to the KWVA Charles Parlier<br />

Chapter in Decatur, IL of which he is serving<br />

as treasurer. Merle and his wife Judy lives in<br />

Decatur, IL.<br />

<strong>War</strong>ren “Houston” Thomas is currently<br />

Secretary of the KWVNM&L. <strong>War</strong>ren has<br />

served as a director since the beginning.<br />

<strong>War</strong>ren served in the U.S. Army in the 116th<br />

Engr. Combat BN of the 19th Engr. Combat<br />

Group as a tractor operator. He was drafted<br />

on October 18, 1951 and left the service on<br />

August 13, 1953. His basic training was at Ft.<br />

Leonard Wood, MO. He served in the 10th<br />

Corps and 8th Army during the <strong>Korean</strong> <strong>War</strong>.<br />

When <strong>War</strong>ren returned to civilian life he<br />

worked for the Peabody Coal Company,<br />

Hawthorn Mine and was a self employed<br />

farmer. <strong>War</strong>ren and Betty live at Linton, IN.<br />

Paul Wisovaty is the Treasurer of the<br />

KWVNM&L. He served in the U.S. Army<br />

from 1966 to 1968, to include service in<br />

Vietnam with the 3rd Squadron, 5th U.S.<br />

Armored Cavalry Regiment, 9th Infantry<br />

Division. Upon separation from active duty,<br />

he attended and graduated from the<br />

University of Illinois with a degree in history<br />

and political science in 1973. In 1986 he<br />

became the chief probation officer for<br />

Douglas County. Paul is a past Commander<br />

and Perpetual Quartermaster of Tuscola<br />

VFW Post 10009. Paul and his wife Susan<br />

live in Tuscola, IL.<br />

Sharon E. Corum is the Executive and<br />

Recording Secretary for the KWVNM&L<br />

Board of Directors. Sharon also manages the<br />

office and museum-library. She attended<br />

Lake Land College of Mattoon, IL and<br />

received her Associate of Science Degree in<br />

Education. Following Lake Land she attended<br />

Eastern Illinois University in Charleston,<br />

IL, where she received her Bachelor of<br />

Science Degree in Education. Her major<br />

field of study was history and minor field<br />

was art. After graduation she was a substitute<br />

teacher for 10 years. She then worked in<br />

retail as a manager of a crystal and china<br />

department in a gift store. She also worked as<br />

crew trainer for a small restaurant before<br />

starting with the KWVNM&L. Sharon and<br />

her husband Jack live in Arthur, IL.<br />

The museum and library has had many<br />

visitors this summer. At this time we have<br />

had 11,259 visitors sign the guest register.<br />

We know many have not signed and some<br />

sign and say family, so we do not know how<br />

many family members this includes. We<br />

have had visitors from all 50 states and 29<br />

different countries. We receive many favorable<br />

comments and the visitors are very<br />

impressed. We invite you all to come and see<br />

our museum and library.<br />
