From the Desk of the General Manager
to offer our Members many wonderful events and
activities. We have a tremendous month planned for
you including Friday Night Live at the pool, our Parent/Child
Glow Ball Event, a
Nine & Dine Tournament, Funin
–the Sun Tennis Events, a
Kid’s Movie Night, and more!
We are also preparing to host
our sixth Annual Employee Appreciation
Party on August
15 th . If you would like to donate
your time to work this
event, please email me or sign
Joseph Fulco, CCM
General Manager
up on the Club’s website. If you would like to make
donations for the event (sporting tickets, apparel, gift
cards or gifts), please drop them off at the administrative
offices. No donation is too small! You will notice
a $20 Member charge on your Member statement this
month for the Employee Appreciation Party. This is a
voluntary charge, but I hope that every Member will
support this important day for our staff.
Since more Members are utilizing the Club’s Kid Zone
babysitting service, we are extending the hours. Kid
Zone will now be open from 9:00 a.m. until 3:00 p.m.,
Tuesday through Friday. After Labor Day, the Kid Zone
will also be open on Wednesday and Friday evenings
from 5:30 p.m. until 9:00 p.m. Please remember to
make Kid Zone reservations in advance.
The Crocs Swim Team finished another successful season
last month. Kudos go out to Karen Heinz, Karen
Banas, Jen Lawrence, Kathy Roetering, Ann Bonner
Marybeth Sedlack, Diane Michalski, and Monica Adams,
who all sat on this year’s Swim Team Committee.
Not only did we win several swim meets, but the kids
had a wonderful time competing and improving their
August 2011
strokes. We are already looking forward to next season
at the pool, which will have new swim lane markers!
The Tennis Committee is working hard to plan our first
ever Cattail Creek Tennis Classic on September 22 -25.
This three day event for members and guests will include
competitive match play and a Luau Cocktail
Party! Please visit the Club’s website to learn more
and register. With Christine Callahan as the Tennis
Committee Chair, I know it will be a great weekend!
Finally, last month I had the opportunity to attend a
private wine tasting at Constantine Wines with several
club managers from the area. As you may know, the
owner of Constantine Wines, Gus Kalaris, is a Cattail
Creek Member! We all had a wonderful time and
learned a great deal about some incredible wines
(several of which we are adding to our wine list)! In
August, we will feature the Kalaris Pinot Noir by the
glass. Of course, it will also be available by the bottle.
Take my advice and try it; you will love it!
Enjoy the month of August and cheers,
Sincerely,
Tennis
August 2011
What is the Cattail Creek Tennis Classic? Why host a public tennis tournament?
The Cattail Creek Tennis Classic is one-of-a-kind tennis tournament scheduled for September 22-25,
2011. It is open to all tennis players who have a USTA, NTRP or approved club rating. The tournament
will feature singles and doubles events for men and women based on rating and age, mixed doubles
and combos events, and even husband-wife and parent-child events. Unique to most tennis tournaments,
the Cattail Creek Tennis Classic will also have a heavy focus on social events, incorporating an
unparalleled Luau Cocktail Party on Saturday evening, and a Bloody Mary party on Sunday morning.
Sponsors and vendors are currently being signed for the tournament.
There are a number of reasons why Club leadership has decided to host a public tennis tournament,
with the top considerations being:
1. To raise awareness and to showcase Cattail as the premier tennis and golf country club in the
area. What better way then to have them play on our courts, appreciate the views of our golf course,
and enjoy our culinary fare. All Club departments are tasked with creating innovative ways to attract
new Members and the new Cattail Creek Tennis Classic is part of the greater Tennis marketing plan.
2. In addition to providing funding for a tennis scholarship for a Howard County teenager, we are also
trying to begin to raise money to purchase things such as a new ball machine, build a new tennis pro
shop, and eventually quick start courts for the junior tennis program. The Club would rather raise
money through events like Tennis Classic than by asking the membership.
3. The Tennis Classic is being viewed as a regional tournament. The Club’s future objective is to put in
a bid to host a state or sectionals tournament at Cattail Creek which also generates revenue for our
tennis program. In 2012, the Club plans to have the Tennis Classic sanctioned by USTA to help once
again with our visibility within the tennis community.
Visit the public side of the Club’s website for complete details and to register.
Membership
August 2011
Why the Membership Season
Is Not Over Yet
Lynn Slupski
Membership Marketing Director
The period of time known as
‘Membership Season,’ refers to the
most popular months that prospective
Members tend to show interest in, and
hopefully join the Club. Traditionally,
this unwritten timeframe includes the
months of April, May and June, give or
take a couple of weeks.
Historically, it was virtually unheard of
for new Members to join far into the
latter summer months, and prospective
Members never joined during the
cold winter months, instead opting to
wait until spring when things “started
back up.”
At Cattail, we are experiencing a positive
and encouraging shift in the
‘Membership Season’ trend. Over the
past couple of years, we have seen the
“busy” months expand to encompass
March, July and September. Currently,
we are on track to report that new
Memberships were started at the Club
in at least 9 or 10, but hopefully all 12
months in 2011.
What has changed? The main draws to
country clubs were previously, and
justifiably, golf, tennis, and swimming,
which are all usually outdoor activities.
In regions such as ours, which experience
all four seasons (whether we like
it or not), the common misconception
is that there is nothing to do at a club
before Memorial Day or after Labor
Day. While this is still the case for
some clubs, quite the opposite is true
at Cattail.
In recent years, priority has been
placed not only on enhancing the indoor
social activities during the “off
months,” but also on finding ways to
extend golf and tennis options
throughout the fall, winter and early
spring. It is no secret that the fall and
winter months are packed with social
events for children and adults alike.
Theme nights in the restaurant, holiday
celebrations , Trivia Nights, Scotch
& Cigar Nights, Family Nights, the Fall
Festival, Children’s Etiquette Classes,
Movie Nights, Cocktail Parties and
Santa Claus appearances, are only a
sampling of the multitude of scheduled
activities that crowd the social
calendar!
This past year, we implemented a
USGA-approved winter course with
temporary greens and tees that enable
us to keep the golf course open yearround.
Currently, we are making plans
and exploring details to add an indoor
teaching/practice facility for winter
private lessons, even when the ground
is frozen solid and there is snow.
From a tennis perspective, Cattail continues
to maintain a relationship with
the Circle D indoor facility in Woodbine
that allows our tennis professionals
to offer both our regularly scheduled
clinics and also private lessons
year-round at our regular rates. Currently
we are researching possibilities
to install a bubble in the somewhat
near future, that would enclose our
own tennis courts and allow yearround
play.
Our Head Swim Team Coach, Karen
Heinz, coaches a winter swim team,
and though it is not affiliated with Cattail
Creek, it allows our Crocs swimmers
to continue swim practice with
the same coach they have come to
respect and trust during the summer
season.
Members take the lead. Another contributing
factor to the expansion of
membership season, that holds equal
responsibility, is our Members’ takecharge
mentality when it comes to
referring new Members. In the past,
Members might have suggested to a
friend or colleague, that they should
look into joining the Club. If the friend
took the next step in seeking out information,
the Club would take over the
process from there.
Now, the process of educating a prospective
Member about the Club, acclimating
them with the Membership
experience, and ultimately encouraging
them to join, is a joint effort between
current Members and the
Membership Department. We work
together to arrange visits to the Club,
to discuss any topics that may be holding
the prospective Member back, and
to make the new Member feel completely
comfortable.
In acknowledgement of our current
Members’ more dominant role in the
recruitment of new Members, the
Membership Committee put a referral
program in place for the 2011 year
that rewards referring Members with a
$200 statement credit for each new
Social Member they refer and a $400
credit for each new Golf Member.
Seemingly the program was well received
and evaluated as a great way to
thank our Members for their efforts.
The year is only half over, and we have
welcomed 47 new social families and
15 new golfing families. Let’s work together
and make an equally strong
effort to increase the numbers even
more in the second half. Membership
is truly more fun when your friends
belong and can participate too! ▪
Membership
August 2011
Have you participated in a Member website poll yet?
One of the added functionalities of our new website is the ability
to host online polls and surveys on our site. At any given
time, the current Member poll can be found in the lower right
hand corner of the private side homepage.
Thus far, polls have asked Members about such things as their
interest level in potential services such as babysitting and adult
water aerobics. One recent successful poll recruited Member
volunteers by asking if they were interested in hosting prospective
members on the golf course should they be asked.
The current poll question asks for a positive response from
Members who are interested in being contacted to sit in on a
focus group to help us restructure our corporate membership
parameters to better suit the needs of our Members and future
Members who have corporate entertaining needs.
The polls are an example of another unique and easy way in
which we can solicit your feedback and interest levels on various
topics to help us continuously improve service and offerings
at Cattail.
So next time you log into the website to register for an event or
gain information, make sure to look for the poll and vote to
make your voice heard!
“The Journey to the Top”
APPROACH SHOTS
Nic Flickinger, First Assistant
In high school, I had absolutely no clue where I was
headed on my career path. I was good at a lot of
subjects. I excelled in Chemistry and English/Creative
Writing. I also played baseball, basketball, golf, and
hockey. When I was asked to join a newly started Air
Force Junior ROTC program my freshman year, I accepted
the offer. Looking back, it was one of the best decisions
that I could have made. I learned a lot from my instructors,
one of whom I am very close with to this day. He has
served as my mentor through most of my bigger decisions
in life. After going through some first-hand experience and
training, I decided that I was going to be a pilot in the Air
Force. However, when I took my physical for my exam, the
doctor discovered that I had a heart condition. My days of
being an Air Force pilot were over.
I went to college at Penn State University and declared
myself a Pre-Med major after the first semester. Two semesters
and a couple of organic chemistry classes later, I
was back to undecided status. Trying to figure out what I
wanted to do with my life was very frustrating for me. I
felt like someone as well-rounded as I could surely come
to some conclusion. That spring I started to play more
golf, trying to take my mind off of things. I played with a
couple of guys who lived on the same dorm floor and we
would tee it up regularly. One of the guys was in the Professional
Golf Management (PGM) Program and he told
me that I should check it out. I met one of his advisors
who gave me a general overview of the program. Growing
up surrounded by and working at golf courses, it seemed
like a natural fit for me. The next semester I was in the
PGM Program.
So you may be asking yourself this question, as I do quite
often, why a golf professional? The job is long with unusual
hours, working weekends, and sometimes extreme
weather conditions. Some days it seems like the negatives
of the job far outweigh the positives. It is not easy in a
profession that is currently saturated with more professionals
than positions for them. A lot of my classmates in
the PGM Program at Penn State are no longer in a golfrelated
field. But to answer my question, I do what I do for
a living because I love it.
I love being able to tee it up with golfers who share a similar
passion
and love for
the game. I
love being
able to work
with juniors
and watch
them grow
and become
great golfers.
I love being
able to pass
Nic with Chris McKnight, Director of Golf at
Laurel Valley Golf Club. Chris was Nic's first
mentor and remains a close friend.
my golfing knowledge on to beginners so that they can
foster their enjoyment of the game. I love watching golfers
succeed by winnings tournaments, grinding and overcoming
the pressure down the stretch. I love fitting golfers
for new clubs, making sure that they are getting the
proper equipment best suited to their game. I love the
look on someone’s face after their first hole-in-one. I love
a good cigar and nine holes in the late evening. I love the
special kind of laughter that can only come from something
involved in a round of golf. I love that no matter how
it is drummed up, golf is and always will be just a game.
My experiences in the golf business have been many and
the memories I have created will be lasting. I have been
play spectacular golf courses and witness
memorable golf shots that will never be recreated. As I
I will continue to learn and grow, along the way. I
Golf Tip of the Month
‘Feet Together Drill’
Ricky Serrano, Director of Instruction
Keeping your feet together, practice
hitting balls with the ball teed
up. Your feet should be touching
or within 2 or 3 inches of each
other. This is one of the most
popular practice drills because it is
easy to do and does so much for
you. Use it as a warm-up or to stay
loose on the course.
Swing slowly at first. Concentrate on
making solid contact with the ball.
Always think tempo and rhythm.
Once you can hit consistently good
shots, work on hitting the ball off
the grass. This drill encourages you
to swing within your capabilities. It
reduces swaying because of the
narrow balance point. If you sway
or swing too hard you will almost
fall over.
3.
2.
You may be surprised how far you
can hit the ball with your feet together
as you groove your swing.
This drill helps you in many ways.
It's a good drill to do every practice
session as a warm-up. This drill can
actually prevent many bad faults
from creeping into your swing. On a
bad day some players actually use
this drill as an emergency fix during
a round. They actually move their feet closer together
to prevent extraneous body movements that
may be causing errant shots, resulting in loss of confidence
and wasted strokes.
When to utilize this drill:
Do the "Feet Together Drill" whenever you start to
lose confidence in your swing because of repeated
missed shots or ball flight problems.
GREEN UPDATE
Chris Harriman, Golf Course Superintendent
This summer’s weather has thrown a lot at the golf course.
This June was the 11th warmest on record, but still 3 degrees
below last year. July, however, featured more days above 90
degrees than July 2010 and broke a few high temperature
records. After less than an inch of rain in June, we thankfully
received almost 4 inches in July. The high temperatures, high
humidity, and abundance of moisture in the soil has encouraged
disease and put some serious stress on the turf.
The fairways, especially #4, have already
benefited from a good core aerification and sand
topdressing program. This will only improve!
August temperatures are predicted to be above normal, but
the average temperatures will start to subside along with a
much less intense angle of attack from the sun. We are really
looking forward to the fall, especially to start inter-seeding
some turf type tall fescue into the rough. Fall restoration will
take place during the weeks of August 15th and 22nd. The
Golf Course will be closed as usual on the 15th and 22nd. On
the following Tuesdays and Wednesdays, only nine holes will
be open. Fall restoration will most likely involve aerifying the
fairways with solid tines, and pulling cores out of the tees.
The greens will be dryjected on August 23 rd , and weather
permitting, we may pull a small core out.
Overall, the Golf Course has held up well this summer. Much
of that is due to limiting mechanical damage and implementing
the right amount of cultural practices and the right time.
Keep up with the Green Department Blog to see these practices
in action. I will see you all out on the Course!
A Word from the Pro
Joe Mattingly
It’s hard to believe summer is slowly
coming to an end. We have had a very
busy season with our juniors! Over 250
kids are participating in the Junior Team
Tennis program and summer camps.
We will be holding Cattail’s first Annual
Junior Team Tennis Club Championship
this year. The kids will be competing at
each level to determine the 2011 club
champion.
The Fall clinic schedule will begin August
22 nd and run for eight weeks. The
spots are determined by a first come
first serve basis; please email Tim Halter
or myself to guarantee a spot in the
Head Tennis Professional/Junior Director
Our 2011 Summer Junior League is well
underway and going strong, despite the
heat. Our numbers have skyrocketed
this summer! With 170+ kids enrolled,
this is the highest participation level in
the history of the program. I could not
be happier with this outcome and it is
encouraging to see the program flourish.
Since we have implemented the
latest USTA 10 and under rules, we
have also seen the Novice and Futures
levels almost double in size compared
to last year. By using this differentiated
approach to teaching tennis, players
have benefited from the use of low
Tennis
compression balls and smaller nets.
Their growth is a testament to the system’s
effectiveness. Along with the success
of the Junior League, The Gamut
Ladder has also begun. We have had a
few rounds of matches, along with a
couple of challenges being made.
With the aid of our Camp Directors,
Mike Hardman and Christine O’Campos
Barry, and camp counselors Abi Henningsgaard,
and Abby Landis, I continue
to have great confidence in their individual
talents to provide each player
with the instruction and support they
need to enhance every participant’s
tennis technique. I have enjoyed seeing
everyone improve in these past few
weeks, and I look forward to the funfilled
remaining weeks of practices and
competition at each level and anticipate
great results from our juniors!
I am also excited to announce the
launch of our first Cattail Creek Junior
held August 8 th -21 st . Continue to check
