From the Desk of the General Manager
Dear Member,
Summer has arrived and the activity level at the Club
is surpassing record numbers. Over the Memorial Day
weekend, the Pool opened with temperatures reaching
over 90°, I am happy to report that our new umbrellas
and patio furniture have arrived. We now have
plenty of additional seating
options and 20 new umbrellas
so there will be plenty of space
to take a break. Our Pool Café
operated successfully over the
weekend with thanks to the
hard work of many new employees.
We are also in the
process of installing new swimsuit
dryers in both pool locker
rooms. They will be a great
addition allowing Members to
dry their bathing suits in a minute.
Joseph Fulco, CCM, CCE
General Manager
The social calendar for June is packed and we are ofoffering
two new events. Saturday, June 9 is ‘Cattail
Goes to the Dogs.’ Come out to the Club and bring
your dog for some fun! On Father’s Day, Sunday, June
17, we will be offering a Cookout and Car Show. Our
biggest event of the year, our Anniversary Party with
Fireworks, is planned for Saturday, June 30. Mark
your calendars and register online in advance.
If you have dined in the Restaurant this past month,
you may have noticed that Justin Passero, was promoted
to the position of Dining Room Manager. Katelyn
Rubright resigned in April, and after a local search,
I decided to promote Justin. Justin expressed a strong
interest to continue to grow with the Club and his efefforts
to date have been first class. He is a hard
worker who cares about the Membership, and his fellow
employees. Please continue to support Justin as
he improves and sharpens his skills. The last two
months have been very busy and the entire service
staff and culinary team have done fantastic!
I have received nothing but praise regarding our Golf
June 2012
Course conditions this season. I would strongly recommend
bringing friends to play in one of the Club’s
Men’s Guest Days, or hosting friends for a round of
golf. Chris Harriman’s efforts over the past two seasons
are, in my opinion, unparalleled. Recently, Jason
Marciniec, Head Golf Professional, hosted a group
from Oakmont Country Club. One of the guests was a
past Green Chair there, and commented that our
greens were “the best greens he has ever putted on.”
This is a strong, unsolicited endorsement and speaks
volumes on the job our Greens Staff has delivered.
Financially, the Club is having a very good year. Our
membership drive has delivered 32 new Golfing Members
and 28 new Social Members. Lynn Slupski, Membership
Marketing Director, continues to knock the
ball out of the park. Every new Member attends a
Membership Committee Meeting, at which, the Committee
meets the new Members and collectively we
answer any questions they may have. The new Members
frequently tell us that Lynn has given them a tremendous
amount of information and has been extremely
helpful. Our membership drive, fantastic
weather, outstanding Golf Course, dedicated staff and
fantastic members have resulted in revenues exceeding
the budget! From an expense standpoint, management
has done a great job only allowing budget
variances that have resulted from increased revenue.
Finally, I want to update you on the two new tennis
courts. The Club is working on resubmitting the waiver
request to the County. Several months ago we submitted
the request and were denied. The County had
numerous questions regarding the construction process
and plans. We have carefully answered the
County’s questions and plan to resubmit our waiver
request in the weeks ahead. Currently, we plan to secure
the permits and move forward on the project this
fall. As soon as I know the timetable for this project I
will share it with you. This has been a frustrating process
and I promise we are doing everything in our
power to resolve the matter to complete the courts!
Sincerely,
Joseph Fulco, CCM, CCE
GREEN UPDATE
Chris Harriman
Golf Course Superintendent
Spring is coming to an end and we could not
have asked for much better weather.
Even
though we remain about 5 inches of rain shy of
the norm for the year, the Golf Course has faired
well. Cool temperatures and dry weather have
pushed roots deep into the aerification holes we
created this spring. It is not difficult to see how
the Course has firmed up while the turf has remained
healthy. Our strong root system and nutrition
will soon be put to the test this summer.
We look forward to polishing the Golf
Course during the next few weeks. This means
detail work like
divots, weeding
and weedeating
will take the
driver’s seat before
Mother Nature
turns all of
our tools into
hoses in July
and
August.
Our main concern
will still be
keeping
the
Course healthy
and
playing
firm and true.
The density and mass of roots produced
from this one Dryject hole is impressive.
Multiply that by a few million and it
gives a good reason as to why the
greens are in the shape that they are!
Please continue to fix your ball marks on the
greens and replace your divots when possible.
Keep in mind the cart rules posted in the roof of
your cart and take nice gradual turns out of the
fairways and back to the cart path. If your
wooden tee breaks after you crush your drive
down the middle, pick it up and either put it in
your pocket or throw it in the rough so we can
chop it up and send it back to where it came
from. All of these small things help keep the
Course in great shape and we certainly appreciate
your help.
Progress continues on the Indoor Instructional
Facility. All wood framing is finished and the
roof is now complete. All necessary power lines
have been installed and the drywall and siding is
currently being put up. Stone work on the back
patio and around the foundation will begin
shortly. We hope to lay some sod around the
building and finish up the landscaping in the
coming week. It has certainly been an amazing
team effort thus far, with many different contractors
coming together to produce a great product,
all gracious Member contributions.
I would like to thank everyone for their feedback
and accolades this spring. Our success relies on
your support and trust. We look forward to improving
exponentially as time rolls on. We will
“A Few Reminders”
It is hard to believe it is June! It
seems like just the other day the
regular Course was opening for
play and now, so much is happening.
All of the CCWGA leagues are
in full swing, Junior Golf Camps
start next week, and the Gentlemen’s
Invitational is right around
the corner. With so much going on
day-in and day-out, it is always
good to be reminded of a few
things that will help make your visit
to the Golf Course more enjoyable
and more efficient.
Checking In. Whether you are by
yourself or with a guest, playing
nine or eighteen, it is always good
to stop in the Golf Shop prior to
your round. Checking in with a
member of the Professional Staff
helps guarantee all information is
accurate and can be billed correctly.
If you have guests or are using
bond rounds, be sure to fill out a
Guest Information Form to correctly
record the information. The more
information that you provide us, the
better we can track rounds, guests,
carts, and much more. Plus, we
enjoy getting to say hello to you
before your round!
What You Are Wearing. Whether
you are coming from the office,
from the gym, or elsewhere, please
be sure that you are properly attired
for golf. Men must wear collared
shirts that are to be tucked in
at all times. No denim is permitted
at any time. When changing your
shoes, please do so in the locker
rooms and not in the parking lot.
APPROACH SHOTS
Nic Flickinger, First Assistant
The dress code is applicable to all
areas of the golf operation, including
the golf course, driving range,
and practice facilities. Please be
sure that you, your family, and your
guests are properly attired at all
times. Don't have what you need to
be able to use the golf facilities?
No problem. The Golf Shop has all
of the clothing that you need to
make you 'golf legal'. If you have
any questions regarding the dress
code, please consult a member of
the Professional Staff.
Quiet Please. When using the golf
facilities, please be sure to use
your cell phone in a manner that is
respectful of those around you.
Making and receiving phone calls
should be limited to emergencies.
Cell phones are permitted in the
parking lot, locker room, Golf Shop,
and on the Lower Patio. Please be
sure to keep your ringer off so as
not to disturb those around you. If
you need to take a phone call while
on the driving range, please remove
yourself from the company of
others so as not to bother those
around you.
Keep Rolling. Whether it is a quiet
Tuesday or a busy Saturday,
please make sure that your target
time for a round of golf is four
hours and 15 minutes, or less.
Keeping this target time in mind,
makes your round of golf and that
of those around you, much more
enjoyable. Be ready to play when it
is your turn and please obey the
cart rules for the day. Please also
be sure to keep the golf carts out of
the rough and off of the mounds,
while obeying the necessary cart
path restrictions. Always strive to
keep up with the group in front of
you, rather than staying ahead of
the group behind you. Think of your
group as the pace car in a Nascar
race, but at a much quicker pace!
Read Me. With great technology
comes quite a few emails! Cattail
does a great job of communicating
to our Members via email. Please
be sure to take the time to check
out these messages. In addition to
providing important information,
these emails provide schedules,
registration links, upcoming events,
and much more about the entire
Club, not just golf. The weekly update
lets you know so much: golf
times for the week, events, sign
ups, results, updates....you name
it! Another great tool is the newsletter,
which provides much of the
same information but in a more detailed
level. Assuming you are
reading this article, then you already
know what I am talking
about! We look forward to seeing
you at the club soon!
Golf
June 2012
Ricky Serrano, PGA
Director of Instruction
Let’s talk about hitting it long!
How do I hit big drives? How can I gain 10 yards?
How can I get more distance?
These are questions I get asked all the time, and I
have the answers to these questions! There are
many ways to increase your distance.
The easiest way to
increase distance is
with technology.
Right off the bat, you
can buy yourself a
few yards by purchasing
some modern
equipment. These
clubs are bigger and better while being lighter
and forgiving. They allow you to swing faster and
they help you tremendously with miss hits. Check
out the difference in the picture above between
and old equipment.
You can also increase your distance by getting in golf
shape. I’ve mentioned being in ‘golf shape’ before to
improve other aspects of your game, and distance is
no different. Being in golf shape helps with virtually
all aspects of the game of golf. If you improve your
flexibility and strength, not only will you make a bigger
turn, but will also increase your club head speed
with a balance swing. The most efficient way to increase
your distance is what they call on tour, the
“SMASH FACTOR.”
What is the smash factor?
The smash factor is the ratio between ball speed and
club head speed.
How important is smash factor?
It is very important! In fact, it is much more important
than many think, especially for those golfers
who try to swing out of their shoes. By trying to increase
club speed,
these golfers often
lose control and
don’t get a solid,
centered impact, resulting
in a relatively
low smash factor, far
from what is best. If
you want to hit the
long ball you need
take advantage of
today’s equipment,
get in shape ,and
most important, increase
your ball speed and your centeredness of
contact!
Father’s Day
Don’t forget that Father’s Day is coming up in a couple
of weeks. If you think that Dad might need some
help ‘hitting it long,’ now is the perfect time to pick
up a package of golf lessons as a gift for him. Stop in
the Golf Shop, and any member of the Professional
Staff would be happy to help you.
As a reminder to Members who use
the ball machine, if you are the last
player to use the ball machine in the
evening please put the unit away in
the shed after you have used it. The
ball machine was left out a few times
and was soaked by the time we came
in the next morning. The ball machine
is brand new and with good care, it
will last us some time. Even when not
using the ball machine, we ask that
you are responsible and courteous to
Tip of the Month
Is Repetition in Tennis Boring?
Tim Halter
Head Teaching Professional
When training with repetition, it is
important to understand that even
though you are hitting a given shot
repeatedly, it is really not the same
Tennis
shot over and over again.
For example, let's say you are working
on a forehand and have hit a substantial
number of balls. You may think,
"This is boring, I'm just hitting the
same shot." The truth is, externally
you may be hitting the same shot but
internally you are not!
Internally, the body is attempting to
connect the racket to the arm, to the
body, and to thousands of other intricate
actions so you can hit the ball as
a whole unit, not individual parts. In
other words, the body is trying to give
you a "feel." As you train, this internal
feel changes even though you are performing
the same shot!
Remember, the body is not accustomed
to lugging around this foreign
object called a racket. Therefore it
must figure out a way to either get rid
of this foreign object (quit tennis) or
integrate it into your body's system as
a whole unit. For the best players in
the world, the racket has, in effect,
become an extension of their arm.
Doing this is not easy. Depending on
the level you would like to play, this
can take many months and years! This
is why repetition is so important. You
must move from no feel to a tiny feel,
to a little feel, to a big feel, to bigger
feel and finally to a complete feel.
But while you are changing from feel
to feel you are still practicing the
same shot. When you have breakthroughs
in the levels of feel, the repetition
training is no longer boring. In
fact, the next level of feel can be
downright exhilarating and you will
have a tremendous sense of accomplishment.
This in turn begins to develop
true confidence and belief in
yourself.
June 2012
The repetition process has a dual
function. First, you learn the stroke
and second, you develop belief in
yourself. You did it! In conclusion, if
you have not yet had any changes in
the feel of your strokes you simply
have not hit enough balls. Stay with
it! When you have your first slight
change in the feel of a shot you will
be encouraged to forge forward to
the next level.
