ART SAYS IT (Competitive)<br />
PURPOSE<br />
To offer participants an opportunity <strong>to</strong> use their talents,<br />
skills, and the <strong>to</strong>ols of drawing, painting and other art media<br />
<strong>to</strong> communicate a Biblical message related <strong>to</strong> the annual<br />
convention theme.<br />
EVENT PARTICIPATION<br />
A. Art Says It is an individual event. While adult guidance<br />
is appreciated, the creation and production of the artwork<br />
must be the responsibility of the student.<br />
B. Participants must be in grades 3 through 12.<br />
C. Participants are divided in<strong>to</strong> the following divisions:<br />
Grades 3-4 Grades 5-6 Grades 7-8<br />
Grades 9-10 Grades 11-12<br />
D. K-2 and Bartimaeus participants may participate in<br />
Non-Competitive Art Says It. See the Art Says It Non-<br />
Competitive section for information.<br />
E. Individuals may only submit one entry per category in<br />
any of these five categories:<br />
1. Drawing/Sketching<br />
2. Painting<br />
3. Pho<strong>to</strong>graphy<br />
4. Poster<br />
5. Bulletin Board (Pre-convention ONLY) – Specific<br />
rules for this category begin on page 11.<br />
F. Refer <strong>to</strong> Art Says It Non-Competitive for other categories<br />
and options.<br />
EVENT RULES AND GUIDELINES<br />
Entries in each of the four categories will be judged for<br />
construction, content and creativity.<br />
A. Construction (Type of Material):<br />
Effective Use of Materials/Media – The work should<br />
reflect that the artist gave thought and time <strong>to</strong> creating<br />
the piece. The overall quality of the piece should show<br />
workmanship, including neatness and composition.<br />
B. Content (Topic of Work):<br />
Emphasis should be on glorifying God, serving others<br />
and imitating Christ. Artwork should adequately reflect<br />
the theme of the convention. Teaching Bulletin Boards<br />
should adequately reflect biblical truths.<br />
C. Creativity (Design):<br />
Originality – uniqueness<br />
Design – layout, neatness, organization<br />
Overall Appeal – impression (this is very subjective)<br />
GENERAL RULES FOR CONSTRUCTION, CONTENT<br />
AND CREATIVITY<br />
A. The actual artwork entries for Painting or Drawing/<br />
Sketching must be at least 8 1/2” x 11”, but must not<br />
exceed 16” x 20”. These sizes include any matting or<br />
framing. No “painting by numbers” accepted.<br />
B. Pho<strong>to</strong> entries may be color or black and white. All<br />
pho<strong>to</strong> entries must be framed and/or matted. All pho<strong>to</strong><br />
entries must be at least 4” x 6” and must not exceed 8<br />
1/2” x 11”. These sizes include any matting or framing.<br />
Digital enhancement of pho<strong>to</strong>graphs is not allowed.<br />
Pho<strong>to</strong>s taken with a digital camera may be submitted,<br />
but cannot be fixed, corrected or enhanced in any way<br />
before printing. The addition of a title for the pho<strong>to</strong> or a<br />
verse of scripture is not <strong>to</strong> be considered enhancement<br />
and is allowed. This category is about pho<strong>to</strong>graphy,<br />
not computer enhancements, graphics or manipulation<br />
of pho<strong>to</strong>graphs. We rely on your honesty<br />
and integrity.<br />
C. Posters should adhere <strong>to</strong> the following guidelines:<br />
1. Posters must be based on the overall convention<br />
theme.<br />
2. Standard poster board must be used (22 inches by<br />
28 inches).<br />
3. No copyrighted figures (such as car<strong>to</strong>on figures)<br />
may be used, unless written permission is acquired.<br />
4. Collage designs may be used <strong>to</strong> decorate posters<br />
but must be able <strong>to</strong> be displayed as a poster.<br />
D. Titles and descriptions are not required for art entries,<br />
but may be included, if desired, <strong>to</strong> better associate the<br />
