The Research Culture of the Department<br />
There is a wide variety of <strong>in</strong>ternationally recognised research activity <strong>in</strong> the Department of <strong>History</strong>,<br />
sometimes <strong>in</strong>volv<strong>in</strong>g specialist research teams of academic staff, research associates, and visit<strong>in</strong>g<br />
scholars.<br />
The Department also reta<strong>in</strong>s a strong commitment to <strong>in</strong>dividual research and scholarship, which is a<br />
prerequisite for develop<strong>in</strong>g many of its key research areas. Such areas extend <strong>in</strong> time from the early<br />
medieval era to the modern and post-modern periods, and <strong>in</strong> region from the British Isles and central<br />
Europe to North America and the Caribbean, North Africa and other Mediterranean lands, and India<br />
and S<strong>in</strong>gapore. Our research embraces socio-economic, cultural, political, religious and <strong>in</strong>tellectual<br />
history, and often has an <strong>in</strong>novative cross-discipl<strong>in</strong>ary emphasis.<br />
Current research projects <strong>in</strong> the <strong>History</strong> Department <strong>in</strong>clude The Norman Edge: Identity and State<br />
Formation on the Frontiers of Europe (c.1050-1200) and The Cultural Politics of English Pantomime,<br />
1837-1901, both funded by the AHRC. We also have a Faculty research group on The Dynamics of<br />
Memory, and are <strong>in</strong>tend<strong>in</strong>g to house the new Victoria County <strong>History</strong> of Cumbria <strong>in</strong> the Department.<br />
You are strongly encouraged to study the list of staff research <strong>in</strong>terests at the back of this booklet, and<br />
to consult any member of staff whom you th<strong>in</strong>k may be helpful to you <strong>in</strong> your research.<br />
The Postgraduate Community<br />
As an MA student <strong>in</strong> the Department of <strong>History</strong>, you become part of a thriv<strong>in</strong>g postgraduate<br />
community which <strong>in</strong>cludes those study<strong>in</strong>g for an MA <strong>in</strong> <strong>History</strong> <strong>in</strong> a wide range of topics and<br />
research students study<strong>in</strong>g towards their MPhil and PhD degrees. Be<strong>in</strong>g a postgraduate student<br />
presents new challenges and so you are encouraged to get to know your peers and become part of this<br />
larger community.<br />
Representation from the MA students to departmental management is ma<strong>in</strong>ta<strong>in</strong>ed through the<br />
election of one student to the Staff-<strong>Student</strong> Consultative Committee and the Departmental Meet<strong>in</strong>g.<br />
Both meet twice termly, and the representative is encouraged to br<strong>in</strong>g to the committee any issues<br />
relat<strong>in</strong>g to the MA cohort.<br />
Each year <strong>in</strong> May, the research students <strong>in</strong> the department organise Histfest, a conference organised<br />
for and by postgraduates that attracts research students from all over the country. You are warmly<br />
<strong>in</strong>vited to attend this event, meet postgraduates from other universities, listen to research papers and<br />
take part <strong>in</strong> lively debate.<br />
