Given that research is complex and diverse in terms of processes and reach, the responsibilities
of PIs are wide-ranging and dependent
on the nature of the research work they undertake
across disciplines. In practice, PIs are responsible for
the management of research projects, the successful
negotiation of research aims and outputs of these projects,
the research governance of their work, the support
and career development of individual researchers engaged to deliver the project.
Appropriate training and development of research staff is valued and is directly beneficial
to the project and the career development of the individual.
PIs should be able to act as mentors or facilitators
of these development opportunities for researchers in
their groups as well as within their faculty and the wider
university environment. The following list includes the
principal PI-related responsibilities that relate to their role
within the University:
Management and intellectual leadership of the research they undertake and the
people who work on the project
Commitment to research governance and research integrity, the standards and
conduct expected of staff engaged in research as expressed in the University
guidance and the Concordat to Support Research Integrity
Understanding of research funding in relation to University financial regulations
and codes of practice
Provision of research planning advice, guidance on
career development opportunities, constructive
feedback and support offered to all members of staff
employed on their direct projects and to those within
their wider sphere of activity.
