4. Professional Development Review (PDR) and Portfolio of Activity (PoA)
“The PDR and PoA are the primary institutional processes to allow staff
to identify their development needs”
All staff of the University are required to have regular formal
review meetings. The University’s scheme is known as
PDR and the process is expected to take place when a
member of staff joins the University and then, as a mandatory
minimum, on an annual basis. PIs must recognise
the necessity of conducting PDRs for researchers in order
for the researchers to be clear about the expectations of their role, and the plans and
priorities of the research project, the development needs of the researchers and the
standard of contribution being made. The current process in the University is available
here.
The PDR allows PIs and researchers to take a considered
view of how work is progressing in relation to the expectations
of the project, which may change during its duration.
If things do change, the PDR allows for ‘in-year’
PDRs to assist both parties to record any unanticipated
events which might affect the project and how these will be dealt with or a reorientation
of the project undertaken.
All academic staff, including researchers, are required to complete the PoA (click
here) which allows staff to record their activities, including publications and conference
presentations together, with plans for research and development (formal and
informal) which they have undertaken or wish to undertake. The Portfolio is a live
repository of data and other information and its completion and regular updating is a
mandatory expectation at the University of Liverpool.
The PDR and PoA are the primary institutional processes to allow staff to identify
their development needs in the context of their role, activity and career aspirations,
to discuss these with their PDR Reviewer (who may also be their PI) and to secure
agreement for development and training (both formal and informal) where this is
considered to be appropriate and can be supported and resourced.
