Unit 7, page 31 The circle is the most perfect of all plane shapes having infinite symmetry. The fascinating relationship between circumference and diameter has interested mathematicians for centuries and the extraordinary properties of the number 1T continue to stimulate research. A thin strip of 1 mm 2 graph paper makes an excellent 'curved~ ruler and seems to follow the circumference of a circle in a most natural way. There are other ways circular measurements may be explored such as putting an ink blob on a coin and rolling it down a slope or wheeling a bicycle along after making a wet paint-mark on one of its wheels. Practical alternatives emphasize that all circles are the same in the ratio of diameter to circumference and fix the number 1T far better than calculations. (Incidentally ~ all regular polygons have fixed circumference/diameter relationships. Squares for example have perimeters which are 1·414 times their diameter ~while the perimeters of all regular hexagon~ are 3 times their diameters.) .~ Work on circles leads naturally to the exploration of the cylinder which is a far more common object than a circle pure and simple. C + D comes to approximately 3·14 every time. 20
